Psalm 116:1-4

God saved me from death[a]

116 I love the Lord,
because he heard me when I called to him.
He listened carefully to me.
When I need help, I will always pray to him,
for as long as I live.
The danger of death was very near to me.
I became afraid of the deep hole of death.
I was very sad and upset.
Then I called out to the Lord.
I said, ‘Lord, please save my life!’

Psalm 116:12-19

12 The Lord has done many kind things to help me.
What can I give back to him?
13 I will offer a cup of wine to the Lord,
to thank him because he saved me!
I will worship him.
14 I will give to the Lord
    everything that I have promised.
I will do that when all his people meet together.
15 The Lord is sad when one of his servants dies,
because their lives are valuable to him.
16 Lord, I really am your servant.
I am like a slave in your house.
You have saved me from death.
17 I will offer to you a special sacrifice to say ‘thank you’.
I will worship you as Lord.
18 I will give to the Lord
    everything that I have promised.
I will do that when all his people meet together,
19 in the yard of the Lord's temple.
Yes, I will worship you in your temple in Jerusalem.
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!

Isaiah 25:1-5

A song to thank God

25 Lord, you are my God!
I will praise you
    because your name is great.
You have done wonderful things.
You decided a long time ago what you would do.
And you have done exactly what you promised to do.
You have destroyed cities
so that they become a heap of stones.
You have destroyed the strongest cities.
The beautiful palaces in foreign lands have disappeared.
    Nobody will build them again.
So people of strong nations will praise you.
The people of cruel nations will be afraid of you.
You Lord have been a safe place for poor people.
When helpless people were in trouble,
    you have kept them safe.
You were a place for them to hide from the storm.
You gave them shade from the heat.
Yes, cruel people attack them
like a storm that hits against a wall.
and like strong heat in the desert.
You Lord stopped the proud noise of foreign people.
Like the shadow of a cloud that stops the heat of the sun,
you stopped our cruel enemy's songs.
You stopped them as they boasted of their strength.

1 Peter 1:8-12

You have never seen Jesus, but still you love him. You do not see him now, but you believe in him. As a result, you are very happy. There are no words to describe how happy you are. You are happy now because God is saving you from sin. You believe in Jesus, and you know that God saves you because of that.[a]

10 A long time ago, God's prophets spoke about this. They said that God would be very kind to you, his people. They studied carefully to learn how God would save people. 11 They wanted to know when God's special Messiah would come and who he would be. Christ's Spirit showed those prophets that the Messiah would receive much trouble and pain. After that, God would show how great the Messiah is. 12 God showed his prophets that his messages about these things were not really to help them. Instead, God sent his message to the prophets to help you. That message is the good news about Jesus Christ which you have now heard. God sent his Holy Spirit from heaven to help people to tell the good news to you. Even the angels would like to understand more about these things.
