Version
Psalm 143

This is a song that David wrote.

Please help me, Lord![a]

143 Lord, I pray to you for help.
    Please listen to me.
Answer me, because you do what is right,
and I know that I can trust you.
Do not judge me, your servant.
Nobody is righteous when they stand in front of you.
My enemies are chasing me.
They knock me down to the ground.
They make me live in dark places,
like people who have been dead for a long time.
My strength is leaving me,
    and I feel very upset.
I remember what happened many years ago.
I think carefully about all the good things that you have done.
I raise my hands to pray to you.
I need you to help me,
    like dry ground needs rain.
Selah
Please answer me soon, Lord.
    I am losing my strength.
Do not turn away from me.
If you do, I will join those people who are going down
into the deep hole of death.
Every morning, help me to remember your faithful love,
because I am trusting in you.
Show me how I should live to please you,
because I know that I belong to you.
Lord, save me from my enemies.
I run to you to keep me safe.
10 Teach me to do what pleases you,
    because you are my God.
Let your kind Spirit lead me,
so that I can walk in a safe place.
11 Your name is great, Lord,
so please keep my life safe.
You do what is right,
so bring me out of my troubles.
12 I am your servant and you always love me.
Please show how much you love me,
    and destroy my enemies.
Yes, kill all those who want to kill me!

1 Kings 17:17-24

17 Some time after that, the widow's son became ill. He became very ill until he could no longer breathe. 18 The woman said to Elijah, ‘Servant of God, why have you come to hurt me like this? Did you come to kill my son so that I would remember all my sins?’ 19 Elijah replied, ‘Give your son to me.’ He took her son from her arms. He carried the boy upstairs, to the room where he was staying. He put the boy down to lie on his bed. 20 Then Elijah prayed to the Lord, ‘Lord, my God! Why have you caused such bad trouble to happen to this kind widow? I came to stay with her and now you have killed her son!’ 21 Then Elijah lay with his body across the boy. He did that three times. He prayed to the Lord, ‘Lord, my God, please cause this boy's life to return to him!’ 22 The Lord answered Elijah's prayer. The boy started to breathe again. He was alive! 23 Elijah picked up the boy. He carried him down from his room into the house. He gave the boy to his mother and he said, ‘Look! Your son is alive!’ 24 Then the woman said to Elijah, ‘Now I know that you are a servant of God. The words that you speak are truly a message from the Lord.’

Acts 20:7-12

Paul visits the believers in Troas for the last time

On the Sunday evening, we met together with the believers. We broke bread into pieces and we shared it with each other. Paul spoke to the believers for a long time, until midnight. This was because he wanted to leave Troas the next day.

Many lamps were burning in the upstairs room where we met together. A young man called Eutychus was at the meeting. He was sitting on the edge of a window. When Paul had talked for a long time, Eutychus started to sleep. When he was really sleeping, he fell out of the window. He dropped down a long way to the ground. Some of the believers lifted him up, but he was dead. 10 So Paul went down the stairs to them all. He lay on top of the young man and held him with his arms. Then Paul said to them all, ‘Do not be afraid. He is still alive.’ 11 Paul went back upstairs. He shared bread with the believers and he ate more food. Paul talked to them for a long time, until the sun rose in the morning. Then he left Troas.

12 The other believers took Eutychus to his home. They were very happy because he was alive.
