Fasting as Yahweh Chooses

58 (A)Call out from your throat, do not hold back;
Raise your voice like a trumpet,
And declare to My people their (B)transgression
And to the house of Jacob their sins.
Yet they (C)seek Me day by day and find pleasure in knowing My ways,
As a nation that has done (D)righteousness
And (E)has not forsaken the judgment of their God.
They ask Me for righteous judgments;
They find pleasure in (F)the nearness of God.
‘Why have we (G)fasted and You do not see?
Why have we afflicted our souls and You do not know?’
Behold, on the (H)day of your fast you find your desire,
And oppress all your workers.
Behold, you fast for contention and (I)quarreling and to strike with a wicked fist.
You do not fast like you do today to (J)make your voice heard on high.
Is it a fast like this which I choose, a day for a man to afflict himself?
Is it for bowing [a]one’s head like a reed
And for spreading out (K)sackcloth and ashes as a bed?
Will you call this a fast, even an (L)acceptable day to Yahweh?
Is this not the fast which I choose,
To (M)loosen the bonds of wickedness,
To release the bands of [b]the yoke,
And to (N)let the oppressed go free
And (O)break every [c]yoke?
Is it not to (P)divide your bread [d]with the hungry
And (Q)bring the afflicted homeless into the house;
When you see the (R)naked, you cover him;
And not to (S)hide yourself from your own flesh?
Then your (T)light will break out like the dawn,
And your (U)recovery will speedily spring forth;
And your (V)righteousness will go before you;
The glory of (W)Yahweh will be your rear guard.
Then you will (X)call, and Yahweh will answer;
You will cry, and He will say, ‘Here I am.’
If you (Y)remove the [e]yoke from your midst,
The [f](Z)pointing of the finger and (AA)speaking wickedness,

Isaiah 58:9-12

Then you will (A)call, and Yahweh will answer;
You will cry, and He will say, ‘Here I am.’
If you (B)remove the [a]yoke from your midst,
The [b](C)pointing of the finger and (D)speaking wickedness,
10 And if you [c](E)offer your soul to the hungry
And satisfy the soul of the afflicted,
Then your (F)light will rise in darkness
And your thick darkness will become like midday.
11 And (G)Yahweh will continually guide you,
And (H)satisfy your soul in scorched places,
And (I)fortify your bones;
And you will be like a (J)watered garden,
And like a (K)spring of water whose waters do not [d]fail.
12 Those from among you will (L)rebuild the ancient waste places;
You will (M)raise up the foundations of past generation upon generation;
And you will be called the repairer of the (N)breach,
The restorer of the paths for one to inhabit.

Paul’s Reliance upon the Spirit

And when I came to you, brothers, I (A)did not come with superiority of word or of wisdom, proclaiming to you (B)the [a]witness of God. For I determined to know nothing among you except (C)Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. And I was with you in (D)weakness and in (E)fear and in much trembling, and my word and my preaching were (F)not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of (G)the Spirit and of power, so that your faith would not be in the wisdom of men, but in (H)the power of God.

Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are (I)mature, a wisdom, however, not of (J)this age nor of the rulers of (K)this age, who are (L)being abolished. But we speak God’s wisdom in a (M)mystery, the wisdom which has been hidden, which God (N)predestined before the (O)ages to our glory, (P)which none of the rulers of (Q)this age has understood; for if they had understood it, they would not have crucified (R)the Lord of glory. But just as it is written,

(S)Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard,
And which have not entered the heart of man,
All that God has prepared for those who love Him.”

10 [b](T)But to us God revealed them (U)through the Spirit, for the Spirit searches all things, even the (V)depths of God. 11 For who among men knows the depths of a man except the (W)spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the depths of God no one knows except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we (X)have received, not the spirit of (Y)the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the depths graciously given to us by God,

1 Corinthians 2:13-16

13 of which depths we also speak, (A)not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, [a]combining spiritual depths with spiritual words.

14 But [b]a (B)natural man (C)does not accept the depths of the Spirit of God, for they are (D)foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because (E)they are spiritually examined. 15 But he who is (F)spiritual examines all things, yet he himself is examined by no one. 16 For (G)who has known the mind of the [c]Lord, that he will direct Him? But (H)we have the mind of Christ.

Matthew 5:13-20

Salt and Light

13 “You are the salt of the earth; but (A)if the salt has become tasteless, how will it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out to be trampled under foot by men.

14 “You are (B)the light of the world. A city set on a [a]hill cannot be hidden; 15 (C)nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a [b]basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may (D)see your good works, and (E)glorify your Father who is in heaven.

17 “Do not think that I came to abolish the (F)Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. 18 For truly I say to you, (G)until heaven and earth pass away, not [c]the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches [d]others to do the same, shall be called least (H)in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

20 “For I say to you that unless your (I)righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
