Psalm 112:1-9

God makes his people strong[a]

112 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
When someone respects the Lord with fear,
    God has blessed that person!
He is happy to obey the Lord's commands.
His children will become powerful in the land.
God will bless their descendants who serve him.
His family will have valuable things,
    and they will be rich.
People will always remember
the good things that they have done.
God's light shines on those who serve him,
even when they are in a dark place.
God blesses those who are kind to others,
and who do what is right and fair.
People who are kind and lend money to others,
and who work in an honest way,
    will enjoy a good life.
Righteous people will never fail.
    People will always remember them.
They are not afraid to hear bad news.
They are brave,
because they trust in the Lord.
Their thoughts are strong
and they will not be afraid.
They know that they will win against their enemies.
They give their things to help poor people.
People will always remember
the good things that they have done.
They will be powerful
    and people will respect them.

Psalm 112:10

10 When wicked people see this,
    they will be angry.
They will show their teeth in anger,
    but then they will disappear.
Whatever wicked people want,
    they will never get it.

Isaiah 29:1-12

A sad song about Ariel

29 It will be very bad for Ariel, the city where David lived.[a] Continue to have your usual feasts every year, but trouble will come!

I will bring trouble to Ariel. The people there will be very sad and they will weep. Ariel will become like my altar for burnt offerings.[b]

I will bring an army to attack you. There will be soldiers all round the city so that nobody can leave. I will build strong towers against the city's walls. Then you will fall down to the ground. While you lie there, you will speak. Your words will come quietly from deep down in the dirt. It will seem like the voice of a dead person's spirit. You will sound like a magician who is speaking magic words.

Your enemies will be like an army of dust. The wind will blow away that crowd of cruel men as if they are chaff. That will all happen very suddenly! The Lord Almighty will come with great power. He will come with thunder, earthquake and a loud noise. There will be a great storm with strong winds and a fire that burns up everything.

The great crowd of armies from all the nations that attack Ariel will quickly disappear. They will soon come to an end, like a dream that someone sees in the night. All the weapons that they bring to attack the city's walls will disappear!

A hungry man may dream that he is eating a big meal. But as soon as he wakes up, he knows that he is still hungry! A thirsty man may dream that he is drinking. But as soon as he wakes up, he knows that he is still weak and thirsty. That is what it will be like for the great armies from all the nations that have come to attack Mount Zion.

You are so surprised that you do not believe what I say. You have become completely blind. You are stupid, like people who are drunk, but not from wine! You fall over, but not because you have drunk too much beer!

10 It is the Lord who has caused you to be like that. He has caused you to be completely asleep. He has shut the eyes of your prophets and he has covered the heads of your seers.

11 You do not understand this vision that the Lord has given to me. It is like the words in a closed book. Give the book to someone who can read. Say to him, ‘Read this, please.’ But he will answer, ‘I cannot read it, because someone has closed it.’ 12 Give the book to someone who cannot read and tell them, ‘Read it, please.’ But he will answer, ‘I do not know how to read.’

James 3:13-18

How to be wise

13 Do some of you think that you are wise? Do you think that you are clever? If so, show that you are wise by the way that you live. Be kind to other people. Do things that are good. That is what it means to be wise. 14 But if you live in a bad way, do not think that you are wise. Are you jealous of other people so that you hate them? Do you want to make yourself important? If you live like that, do not say that you are great and wise. You are not saying what is true. 15 You are not being wise in the way that God wants you to be wise. Instead, you are thinking like people who do not know God. Your thoughts do not come from God's Spirit. They come from demons. 16 If you are jealous of other people and you want to make yourself important, that will cause trouble. People will argue and fight against one another. They will do all kinds of bad things. 17 But if God makes you really wise, you will live in a completely good way. That is the most important thing. Also, you will live in a way that brings peace. You will be kind to other people so that they become your friends. You will listen to them and not argue. You will forgive them and do many good things to help them. You will not choose between people. And you will not be a hypocrite.

18 Those who bring peace to other people help them to live together in peace. As a result, people choose to do what is right and good.
