9 Nevertheless the darkness shall not be as when the distress was in the [land], at the time he at first lightly, and afterwards heavily, visited the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,—the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations:

² the people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; they that dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them light hath shone.

³ Thou hast multiplied the nation, hast increased its joy: they joy before thee like to the joy in harvest; as [men] rejoice when they divide the spoil.

⁴ For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian.

27 Jehovah is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? Jehovah is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

⁴ One [thing] have I asked of Jehovah, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of Jehovah all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of Jehovah, and to inquire [of him] in his temple.

⁵ For in the day of evil he will hide me in his pavilion; in the secret of his tent will he keep me concealed: he will set me high upon a rock.

⁶ And now shall my head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me; and I will offer in his tent sacrifices of shouts of joy: I will sing, yea, I will sing psalms unto Jehovah.

⁷ Hear, Jehovah; with my voice do I call; be gracious unto me, and answer me.

⁸ My heart said for thee, Seek ye my face. Thy face, O Jehovah, will I seek.

⁹ Hide not thy face from me; put not thy servant away in anger: thou hast been my help; cast me not off, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.

¹⁰ Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all say the same thing, and that there be not among you divisions; but that ye be perfectly united in the same mind and in the same opinion.

¹¹ For it has been shewn to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of [the house of] Chloe, that there are strifes among you.

¹² But I speak of this, that each of you says, *I* am of Paul, and *I* of Apollos, and *I* of Cephas, and *I* of Christ.

¹³ Is the Christ divided? has Paul been crucified for you? or have ye been baptised unto the name of Paul?

¹⁴ I thank God that I have baptised none of you, unless Crispus and Gaius,

¹⁵ that no one may say that I have baptised unto my own name.

¹⁶ Yes, I baptised also the house of Stephanas; for the rest I know not if I have baptised any other.

¹⁷ For Christ has not sent me to baptise, but to preach glad tidings; not in wisdom of word, that the cross of the Christ may not be made vain.

¹⁸ For the word of the cross is to them that perish foolishness, but to us that are saved it is God's power.

¹² But having heard that John was delivered up, he departed into Galilee:

¹³ and having left Nazareth, he went and dwelt at Capernaum, which is on the sea-side in the borders of Zabulon and Nepthalim,

¹⁴ that that might be fulfilled which was spoken through Esaias the prophet, saying,

¹⁵ Land of Zabulon and land of Nepthalim, way of [the] sea beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations:

¹⁶ —the people sitting in darkness has seen a great light, and to those sitting in [the] country and shadow of death, to them has light sprung up.

¹⁷ From that time began Jesus to preach and to say, Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens has drawn nigh.

¹⁸ And walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishers;

¹⁹ and he says to them, Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.

²⁰ And they, having left their trawl-nets, immediately followed him.

²¹ And going on thence he saw other two brothers, James the [son] of Zebedee and John his brother, in the ship with Zebedee their father, mending their trawl-nets, and he called them;

²² and they, having left the ship and their father, immediately followed him.

²³ And [Jesus] went round the whole [of] Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the glad tidings of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every bodily weakness among the people.
