Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
Version
Psalm 40:6-17

You do not delight in sacrifice and offering;
You open my ears to listen.[a]
You do not ask for a whole burnt offering or a sin offering.(A)
Then I said, “See, I have come;
it is written about me in the volume of the scroll.(B)
I delight to do Your will, my God;(C)
Your instruction lives within me.”[b](D)

I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly;
see, I do not keep my mouth closed[c]
as You know, Lord.(E)
10 I did not hide Your righteousness in my heart;
I spoke about Your faithfulness and salvation;
I did not conceal Your constant love and truth
from the great assembly.(F)

11 Lord, do not withhold Your compassion from me;
Your constant love and truth will always guard me.(G)
12 For troubles without number have surrounded me;
my sins have overtaken me; I am unable to see.
They are more than the hairs of my head,
and my courage leaves me.(H)
13 Lord, be pleased to deliver me;
hurry to help me, Lord.(I)

14 Let those who seek to take my life
be disgraced and confounded.
Let those who wish me harm
be driven back and humiliated.(J)
15 Let those who say to me, “Aha, aha!”
be horrified because of their shame.(K)

16 Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;
let those who love Your salvation continually say,
“The Lord is great!”(L)
17 I am afflicted and needy;
the Lord thinks of me.
You are my helper and my deliverer;
my God, do not delay.(M)

Isaiah 48:12-21

12 “Listen to Me, Jacob,
and Israel, the one called by Me:
I am He; I am the first,
I am also the last.(A)
13 My own hand founded the earth,
and My right hand spread out the heavens;(B)
when I summoned them,
they stood up together.
14 All of you, assemble and listen!
Who among the idols[a] has declared these things?
The Lord loves him;[b]
he will accomplish His will against Babylon,(C)
and His arm will be against the Chaldeans.
15 I—I have spoken;
yes, I have called him;(D)
I have brought him,
and he will succeed in his mission.(E)
16 Approach Me and listen to this.
From the beginning I have not spoken in secret;(F)
from the time anything existed, I was there.”
And now the Lord God
has sent me and His Spirit.(G)

17 This is what the Lord, your Redeemer,(H) the Holy One of Israel(I) says:

I am Yahweh your God,
who teaches you for your benefit,
who leads you in the way you should go.
18 If only you had paid attention to My commands.
Then your peace would have been like a river,(J)
and your righteousness like the waves of the sea.(K)
19 Your descendants would have been as countless as the sand,(L)
and the offspring of your body like its grains;
their name would not be cut off
or eliminated from My presence.

20 Leave Babylon,
flee from the Chaldeans!
Declare with a shout of joy,
proclaim this,
let it go out to the end of the earth;
announce,
“The Lord has redeemed His servant(M) Jacob!”
21 They did not thirst
when He led them through the deserts;
He made water flow for them from the rock;(N)
He split the rock, and water gushed out.

Matthew 9:14-17

A Question about Fasting

14 Then John’s disciples came to Him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?”(A)

15 Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests[a] be sad while the groom is with them? The time[b] will come when the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast. 16 No one patches an old garment with unshrunk cloth, because the patch pulls away from the garment and makes the tear worse. 17 And no one puts[c] new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the skins burst, the wine spills out, and the skins are ruined. But they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.”
