Isaiah 49:1-7

The Servant Brings Salvation

49 Coasts and islands,[a] listen to me;
distant peoples, pay attention.
The Lord called(A) me before I was born.
He named me while I was in my mother’s womb.(B)
He made my words like a sharp sword;(C)
he hid me in the shadow of his hand.(D)
He made me like a sharpened arrow;
he hid me in his quiver.
He said to me, “You are my servant,(E)
Israel, in whom I will be glorified.”
But I myself said: I have labored in vain,
I have spent my strength for nothing and futility;
yet my vindication is with the Lord,
and my reward is with my God.
And now, says the Lord,
who formed me from the womb to be his servant,
to bring Jacob back to him
so that Israel might be gathered to him;
for I am honored in the sight of the Lord,
and my God is my strength—
he says,
“It is not enough for you to be my servant
raising up the tribes of Jacob
and restoring the protected ones of Israel.
I will also make you a light for the nations,(F)
to be my salvation to the ends of the earth.”(G)
This is what the Lord,
the Redeemer(H) of Israel, his Holy One, says
to one who is despised,
to one abhorred by people,[b](I)
to a servant of rulers:
“Kings will see, princes will stand up,
and they[c] will all bow down
because of the Lord, who is faithful,
the Holy One of Israel(J)—and he has chosen you.”(K)

Psalm 40:1-11

Psalm 40

Thanksgiving and a Cry for Help

For the choir director. A psalm of David.

I waited patiently for the Lord,
and he turned to me and heard my cry for help.(A)
He brought me up from a desolate[a] pit,
out of the muddy clay,(B)
and set my feet on a rock,
making my steps secure.(C)
He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.(D)
Many will see and fear,
and they will trust in the Lord.(E)

How happy is anyone
who has put his trust in the Lord
and has not turned to the proud
or to those who run after lies!(F)
Lord my God, you have done many things—
your wondrous works and your plans for us;
none can compare with you.
If I were to report and speak of them,
they are more than can be told.(G)

You do not delight in sacrifice and offering;
you open my ears to listen.[b]
You do not ask for a whole burnt offering or a sin offering.(H)
Then I said, “See, I have come;
in the scroll it is written about me.(I)
I delight to do your will, my God,(J)
and your instruction is deep within me.”(K)

I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly;
see, I do not keep my mouth closed[c]
as you know, Lord.(L)
10 I did not hide your righteousness in my heart;
I spoke about your faithfulness and salvation;
I did not conceal your constant love and truth
from the great assembly.(M)

11 Lord, you do not[d] withhold your compassion from me.
Your constant love and truth will always guard me.(N)

1 Corinthians 1:1-9

Greeting

Paul,(A) called as an apostle(B) of Christ Jesus by God’s will,(C) and Sosthenes our brother:(D)

To the church of God at Corinth,(E) to those sanctified(F) in Christ Jesus, called(G) as saints, with all those in every place who call on the name(H) of Jesus Christ our Lord—both their Lord and ours.

Grace to you and peace from God our Father(I) and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Thanksgiving

I always thank(J) my God for you because of the grace of God given to you in Christ Jesus, that you were enriched in him(K) in every way, in all speech and all knowledge.(L) In this way, the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you,(M) so that you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait(N) for the revelation(O) of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will also strengthen you to the end,(P) so that you will be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.(Q) God is faithful;(R) you were called by him(S) into fellowship with his Son,(T) Jesus Christ our Lord.

John 1:29-42

The Lamb of God

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God,(A) who takes away the sin(B) of the world! 30 This is the one I told you about: ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.’ 31 I didn’t know him,(C) but I came baptizing with water so that he might be revealed(D) to Israel.” 32 And John testified, “I saw the Spirit(E) descending from heaven like a dove, and he rested on him.(F) 33 I didn’t know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The one you see the Spirit descending and resting on—he is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’(G) 34 I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”[a](H)

35 The next day, John was standing with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”

37 The two disciples heard him say this and followed Jesus. 38 When Jesus turned and noticed them following him, he asked them, “What are you looking for?”

They said to him, “Rabbi”(I) (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

39 “Come and you’ll see,” he replied. So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon.[b]

40 Andrew,(J) Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John and followed him. 41 He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah”[c](K) (which is translated “the Christ”),(L) 42 and he brought Simon to Jesus.

When Jesus saw him, he said, “You are Simon, son of John.[d] You will be called Cephas”(M) (which is translated “Peter”[e]).
