Psalm 29
The Voice of God in a Great Storm
A Psalm of David.
1 Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,[a]
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.(A)
2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name;
worship the Lord in holy splendor.(B)
3 The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the Lord, over mighty waters.(C)
4 The voice of the Lord is powerful;
the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.(D)
5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.(E)
6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf
and Sirion like a young wild ox.(F)
7 The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
8 The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.(G)
10 Now the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” 11 Then the Lord said to Samuel, “See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make both ears of anyone who hears of it tingle.(A) 12 On that day I will fulfill against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end.(B) 13 For I have told him that I am about to punish his house forever for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God,[a] and he did not restrain them.(C) 14 Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be expiated by sacrifice or offering forever.”(D)
15 Samuel lay there until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the Lord. Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. 16 But Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son.” He said, “Here I am.” 17 Eli said, “What was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more also, if you hide anything from me of all that he told you.”(E) 18 So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. Then he said, “It is the Lord; let him do what seems good to him.”(F)
19 As Samuel grew up, the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground.(G) 20 And all Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was a trustworthy prophet of the Lord.(H) 21 The Lord continued to appear at Shiloh, for the Lord revealed himself to Samuel at Shiloh by the word of the Lord.(I) 4 1
The Ark of God Captured
In those days the Philistines mustered for war against Israel,[b] and Israel went out to battle against them;[c] they encamped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines encamped at Aphek.(J)
10 Now there was a disciple in Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias.” He answered, “Here I am, Lord.”(A) 11 The Lord said to him, “Get up and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul. At this moment he is praying,(B) 12 and he has seen in a vision[a] a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.” 13 But Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints in Jerusalem, 14 and here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who invoke your name.”(C) 15 But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is an instrument whom I have chosen to bring my name before gentiles and kings and before the people of Israel;(D) 16 I myself will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.”(E) 17 So Ananias went and entered the house. He laid his hands on Saul[b] and said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on your way here, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”(F) 18 And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and his sight was restored. Then he got up and was baptized, 19 and after taking some food, he regained his strength.
