Psalm 20

God’s Blessing on the King

For the music director. A psalm of David.[a]

20 May Yahweh answer you in the day of trouble.
May the name of Jacob’s God protect[b] you.
May he send you help[c] from the sanctuary,
and from Zion may he sustain you.
May he remember all your offerings,
and your burnt offering may he regard favorably.[d]
May he give to you your heart’s desire,[e]
and your every plan may he fulfill. Selah
May we shout for joy over your victory,
and in the name of our God may we set up banners.
May Yahweh fulfill all your requests.
Now I know that Yahweh will help his anointed.[f]
He will answer him from his holy heaven
with the victorious power of his right hand.
Some boast in chariots and others in horses,[g]
but we boast in the name of Yahweh, our God.
They will collapse and fall,
and we will rise and stand firm.
Rescue,[h] O Yahweh.
Let the king answer us when we call.

Genesis 12:1-7

The Call of Abram

12 And Yahweh said to Abram, “Go out from your land and from your relatives, and from the house of your father, to the land that I will show you. And I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great. And you will be a blessing. And I will bless those who bless you, and those who curse you I will curse. And all families of the earth will be blessed in you.”

Abram’s Journey

And Abram went out as Yahweh had told him, and Lot went with him. Now Abram was seventy-five years old[a] when he went out from Haran. And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his nephew,[b] and all their possessions that they had gathered, and all the persons that they had acquired in Haran, and they went out to go to the land of Canaan. And they went to the land of Canaan. And Abram traveled through the land up to the place of Shechem, to the Oak of Moreh. Now the Canaanites were in the land at that time. And Yahweh appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” And he built an altar there to Yahweh, who had appeared to him.

Hebrews 11:1-12

Examples of Faith in Action

11 Now faith is the realization of what is hoped for, the proof of things not seen. For by this the people of old were approved. By faith we understand the worlds were created by the word of God, in order that what is seen did not come into existence from what is visible.

By faith Abel offered to God a greater sacrifice than Cain, by which he was approved that he was righteous, because[a] God approved him for his gifts, and through it[b] he still speaks, although he[c] is dead. By faith Enoch was taken up, so that he did not experience death, and he was not found, because God took him up. For before his removal, he had been approved as having been pleasing[d] to God. Now without faith it is impossible to please him, for the one who approaches God must believe that he exists and is a rewarder of those who seek him. By faith Noah, having been warned about things not yet seen, out of reverence constructed an ark for the deliverance of his family, by which he pronounced sentence on the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

By faith Abraham, when he[e] was called, obeyed to go out to a place that he was going to receive for an inheritance, and he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he lived in the land of promise as a stranger, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the fellow heirs of the same promise. 10 For he was expecting the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God. 11 By faith also, with Sarah[f],[g] he received the ability to procreate[h] even past the normal age[i], because he regarded the one who had promised to be faithful. 12 And therefore these were fathered from one man, and he being as good as dead, as the stars of heaven in number and like the innumerable sand by the shore of the sea.
