Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
8 O (A)Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer;
Give ear, O (B)God of Jacob! Selah.
9 Behold our (C)shield, O God,
And look upon the face of (D)Your anointed.
10 For (E)a day in Your courts is better than a thousand outside.
I would rather stand at the threshold of the house of my God
Than dwell in the tents of wickedness.
11 For the Lord God is (F)a sun and (G)shield;
The Lord gives grace and (H)glory;
(I)No good thing does He withhold [a]from those who walk [b]uprightly.
12 O Lord of hosts,
How (J)blessed is the man who trusts in You!
Hannah’s Song of Thanksgiving
2 Then Hannah (A)prayed and said,
“My heart exults in the Lord;
(B)My [a]horn is exalted in the Lord,
My mouth [b]speaks boldly against my enemies,
Because (C)I rejoice in Your salvation.
2 “(D)There is no one holy like the Lord,
Indeed, (E)there is no one besides You,
(F)Nor is there any rock like our God.
3 “[c]Boast no more so very proudly,
(G)Do not let arrogance come out of your mouth;
(H)For the Lord is a God of knowledge,
(I)And with Him actions are weighed.
4 “(J)The bows of the mighty are shattered,
(K)But the feeble gird on strength.
5 “Those who were full hire themselves out for bread,
But those who were hungry cease to hunger.
(L)Even the barren gives birth to seven,
But (M)she who has many children languishes.
6 “(N)The Lord kills and makes alive;
(O)He brings down to [d]Sheol and raises up.
7 “(P)The Lord makes poor and rich;
(Q)He brings low, He also exalts.
8 “(R)He raises the poor from the dust,
(S)He lifts the needy from the ash heap
(T)To make them sit with nobles,
And inherit a seat of honor;
(U)For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s,
And He set the world on them.
9 “(V)He keeps the feet of His godly ones,
(W)But the wicked ones are silenced in darkness;
(X)For not by might shall a man prevail.
10 “(Y)Those who contend with the Lord will be shattered;
(Z)Against them He will thunder in the heavens,
(AA)The Lord will judge the ends of the earth;
(AB)And He will give strength to His king,
(AC)And will exalt the [e]horn of His anointed.”
Share the Sufferings of Christ
12 (A)Beloved, do not be surprised at the (B)fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you; 13 but to the degree that you (C)share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the (D)revelation of His glory (E)you may rejoice with exultation. 14 If you are reviled [a](F)for the name of Christ, (G)you are blessed, (H)because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15 Make sure that (I)none of you suffers as a murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or a [b](J)troublesome meddler; 16 but if anyone suffers as a (K)Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to (L)glorify God in this name. 17 For it is time for judgment (M)to begin [c]with (N)the household of God; and if it (O)begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those (P)who do not obey the (Q)gospel of God? 18 (R)And if it is with difficulty that the righteous is saved, [d]what will become of the (S)godless man and the sinner? 19 Therefore, those also who suffer according to (T)the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right.
