Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
26 ¶ And when the wife of Uriah heard that her husband Uriah was dead, she mourned for her husband.
27 So when the mourning was past, David sent and took her into his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son: but the thing that David had done, [a]displeased the Lord.
12 1 David reproved by Nathan, confesseth his sin. 18 The child conceived in adultery, dieth. 24 Solomon is born. 30 Rabbah is taken. 31 The citizens are grievously punished.
1 Then the Lord sent [b]Nathan unto David, who came to him, and said unto him, There were two men in one city, the one rich, and the other poor.
2 The rich man had exceedingly many sheep and oxen:
3 But the poor had none at all, save one little sheep which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up with him, and with his children also, and did eat of his own morsels, and drank of his own cup, and slept in his bosom, and was unto him as his daughter.
4 Now there came a [c]stranger unto the rich man, who [d]refused to take of his own sheep, and of his own oxen to dress for the stranger that was come unto him, but took the poor man’s sheep, and dressed it for the man that was come to him.
5 Then [e]David was exceedingly wroth with the man, and said to Nathan, As the Lord liveth, the man that hath done this thing, [f]shall surely die,
6 And he shall restore the lamb (A)fourfold, because he did this thing, and had no pity thereof.
7 Then Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, I (B)anointed thee King over Israel, and delivered thee out of the hand of Saul.
8 And gave thee thy lord’s [g]house, and thy lord’s [h]wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel, and of Judah, and would moreover (if that had been too little) have given thee [i]such and such things.
9 Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the [j]children of Ammon.
10 Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house, because thou hast despised me, and taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.
13 Then David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the Lord. And Nathan said unto David, The Lord also hath [a]put away thy sin, thou shalt not die.
14 Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast caused the enemies of the Lord to [b]blaspheme, the child that is born unto thee, shall surely die.
15 ¶ So Nathan departed unto his house: and the Lord struck the child that Uriah’s wife bare unto David, and it was sick.
32 1 David punished with grievous sickness for his sins, counteth them blessed to whom God doth not impute their transgressions. 5 And after that he had confessed his sins, and obtained pardon, 6 he exhorteth the wicked men to live godly, 11 and the good to rejoice.
A Psalm of David to give [a]instruction.
1 Blessed is he whose wickedness is [b]forgiven, and whose sin is covered.
2 Blessed is the man, unto whom the Lord imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.
3 When I held my [c]tongue, my bones consumed, or when I [d]roared all the day,
4 (For thine hand is heavy upon me day and night: and my moisture is turned into the drought of Summer. Selah.)
5 Then I [e]acknowledged my sin unto thee, neither hid I mine iniquity: for I thought, I will confess against myself my wickedness unto the Lord, and thou forgavest the punishment of my sin. Selah.
6 Therefore shall everyone that is godly, make his prayer unto thee in a [f]time, when thou mayest be found: surely in the flood of great waters [g]they shall not come near him.
7 Thou art my secret place: thou preservest me from trouble: thou compassest me about with joyful deliverance. Selah.
8 I will [h]instruct thee, and teach thee in the way that thou shalt go, and I will guide thee with mine eye.
9 Be ye not like an horse, or like a mule which understand not: whose [i]mouths thou dost bind with bit and bridle, lest they come near thee.
10 Many sorrows shall come to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the Lord, mercy shall compass him.
11 Be glad ye righteous, and [j]rejoice in the Lord, and be joyful all ye, that are upright in heart.
15 [a]We which are Jews [b]by nature, and not [c]sinners of the Gentiles,
16 Know that a man is not justified by the works of the Law, but by the faith [d]of Jesus Christ, even we, I say, have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the Law, because that by the works of the Law, [e]no flesh shall be justified.
17 (A)[f]If then while [g]we seek to be made righteous by Christ, we ourselves are found sinners, is Christ therefore the minister of sin? God forbid.
18 For if I build again the things that I have destroyed, I make myself a trespasser.
19 For I through the Law am dead to the [h]Law, that I might live unto God.
20 I am crucified with Christ, but I live, yet not [i]I anymore, but Christ liveth in me: and in that I now live in the [j]flesh, I live by the faith in the Son of God, who hath loved me, and given himself for me.
21 [k]I do not abrogate the grace of God: for if righteousness be by the Law, then Christ died without a [l]cause.
36 ¶ [a]And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him: and he went into the Pharisee’s house, and sat down at table.
37 And behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at table in the Pharisee’s house, she brought a box of ointment.
38 (A)And she stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.
39 [b]Now when the Pharisee which bade him, saw it, he spake within himself, saying, If this man were a Prophet, he would surely have known who, and what manner of woman this is which toucheth him: [c]for she is a sinner.
40 [d]And Jesus answered, and said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he said, Master, say on.
41 There was a certain lender which had two debtors: the one ought five hundred pence, and the other fifty:
42 When they had nothing to pay, he forgave them both: Which of them therefore, tell me, will love him most?
43 Simon answered, and said, I suppose that he to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast truly judged.
44 Then he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, and thou gavest me no water to my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.
45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but she, since the time I came in, hath not ceased to kiss my feet.
46 Mine head with oil thou didst not anoint: but she hath anointed my feet with ointment.
47 Wherefore I say unto thee, many sins are forgiven her: [e]for she loved much. To whom a little is forgiven, he doth love a little.
48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven thee.
49 And they that sat at table with him, began to say within themselves, Who is this that even forgiveth sins?
50 And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee: [f]go in peace.
8 1 Women that minister unto Christ of their substance. 4 The parable of the sower. 16 The candle. 19 Christ’s mother and brethren. 22 He rebuked the winds. 26 Of Legion. 37 The Gadarenes reject Christ. 41 Jairus’s daughter healed. 43 The woman delivered from the issue of blood. 52 Weeping for the dead.
1 And it came to pass afterward, that he himself went through every city and town, preaching and publishing the kingdom of God, and the twelve were with him,
2 And certain women, which were healed of evil spirits, and infirmities, as (B)Mary which was called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils,
3 And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others which ministered unto him of their substance.
