A Song of Ascents

The Guardian of God’s People

121 I lift up my eyes toward the mountains—
from where will my help come?
My help is from the Lord,
    maker of heaven and earth.

He will never let[a] your foot slip,
nor[b] will[c] your guardian become drowsy.
Look! The one who is guarding Israel
never sleeps and does not take naps.

The Lord is your guardian;
the Lord is your shade at your right side.
The sun will not ravage you by day,
    nor the moon by night.

The Lord will guard you from all evil,
    preserving[d] your life.
The Lord will guard your goings and comings,[e]
from this time on and forever.

Isaiah 6:1-8

Holy is the Lord

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting upon his[a] throne, high and exalted. The train of his robe filled the Temple. The seraphim stood above him. Each had six wings:[b] with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he was flying. They kept on calling to each other:[c]

“Holy, holy, holy[d] is the Lord of the Heavenly Armies!
The whole earth is full of his glory!”

The foundations of the thresholds quaked at the sound of those who kept calling out,[e] and the Temple was filled with smoke.

“How terrible it will be for me!” I cried, “because I am ruined! I’m a man with unclean lips, and I live among a people with unclean lips! And my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of the Heavenly Armies!”

The Calling of Isaiah

Then one of the seraphim flew to me, carrying a burning coal in his hand that he had taken from the altar with tongs. He touched my mouth and said, “Look! Now that this has touched your[f] lips, your guilt is taken away, and your sins[g] atoned for.”

Then I heard the voice of the Lord as he was asking, “Whom will I send? Who will go for us?”

“Here I am!” I replied. “Send me.”

Luke 5:1-11

Jesus Calls His First Disciples(A)

One day, as the crowd was pressing in on him to listen to God’s word, Jesus[a] was standing by the lake of Gennesaret. He saw two boats lying on the shore, but the fishermen had stepped out of them and were washing their nets. So Jesus[b] got into one of the boats (the one that belonged to Simon) and asked him to push out a little from the shore. Then he sat down and began to teach the crowds from the boat.

When he had finished speaking, he told Simon, “Push out into deep water, and lower your nets for a catch.”

Simon answered, “Master, we have worked hard all night and caught nothing. But if you say so, I’ll lower the nets.” After the men[c] had done this, they caught so many fish that the nets began to tear. So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. They came and filled both boats until the boats[d] began to sink. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell down at Jesus’ knees and said, “Leave me, Lord! I am a sinful man!”— because Simon[e] and all the people who were with him were amazed at the number of fish they had caught, 10 and so were James and John, Zebedee’s sons and Simon’s partners.

Then Jesus told Simon, “Stop being afraid. From now on you will be catching people.” 11 So when they brought the boats to shore, they left everything and followed Jesus.[f]
