Psalm 76

Psalm 76[a]

God Defends Zion

For the leader; a psalm with stringed instruments. A song of Asaph.

I

Renowned in Judah is God,(A)
    whose name is great in Israel.
On Salem[b] is God’s tent, his shelter on Zion.
    There the flashing arrows were shattered,
    shield, sword, and weapons of war.(B)
Selah

II

Terrible and awesome are you,
    stronger than the ancient mountains.[c]
Despoiled are the stouthearted;
    they sank into sleep;
    the hands of all the men of valor have failed.(C)
At your roar, O God of Jacob,
    chariot and steed lay still.
You, terrible are you;
    who can stand before you and your great anger?(D)
From the heavens you pronounced sentence;
    the earth was terrified and reduced to silence,
10 When you arose, O God, for judgment
    to save the afflicted of the land.
Selah
11 Surely the wrath of man will give you thanks;
    the remnant of your furor will keep your feast.

III

12 Make and keep vows to the Lord your God.(E)
    May all around him bring gifts to the one to be feared,
13 Who checks the spirit of princes,
    who is fearful to the kings of earth.

Ezekiel 30:20-26

Pharaoh’s Broken Arm. 20 On the seventh day of the first month in the eleventh year,[a] the word of the Lord came to me: 21 [b]Son of man, I have broken the arm of Pharaoh, king of Egypt. See! It has not been immobilized for healing, nor set with a splint to make it strong enough to grasp a sword.(A) 22 Therefore thus says the Lord God: See! I am coming against Pharaoh, king of Egypt. I will break both his arms, the strong one and the broken one, making the sword fall from his hand. 23 I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them throughout other lands. 24 I will, however, strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon and put my sword in his hand so he can bring it against Egypt for plunder and pillage.(B) 25 When I strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, and the arms of Pharaoh collapse, they shall know that I am the Lord, because I put my sword into the hand of the king of Babylon to wield against the land of Egypt. 26 When I scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them throughout other lands, they shall know that I am the Lord.

John 16:25-33

25 [a](A)“I have told you this in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures but I will tell you clearly about the Father. 26 On that day you will ask in my name, and I do not tell you that I will ask the Father for you.(B) 27 For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have come to believe that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world. Now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”(C) 29 His disciples said, “Now you are talking plainly, and not in any figure of speech. 30 Now we realize that you know everything and that you do not need to have anyone question you. Because of this we believe that you came from God.”[b] 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you believe now? 32 Behold, the hour is coming and has arrived when each of you will be scattered[c] to his own home and you will leave me alone. But I am not alone, because the Father is with me.(D) 33 I have told you this so that you might have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world.”(E)
