⁸ And the Word of the LORD came to him, saying:

⁹ “Up! Get to Zarephath, which is in Sidon, and remain there. Behold, I have Commanded a widow there to sustain you.”

¹⁰ So, he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow was there, gathering sticks. And he called her, and said, “Please bring me a little water in a vessel, so that I may drink.”

¹¹ And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, “Please bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.”

¹² And she said, “As the LORD your God lives, I do not have a cake, but only a handful of meal in a barrel and a little oil in a jar. And behold, I am gathering a few sticks with which to go in and prepare it for me and my son, so that we may eat it, and die.”

¹³ And Elijah said to her, “Do not fear. Come, do as you have said. But make me a little cake from it first and bring it to me. And afterward make some for you and your son.

¹⁴ “For thus says the LORD God of Israel: ‘The meal in the barrel shall not be finished, nor shall the oil in the jar be depleted, until the time that the LORD sends rain upon the Earth.’”

¹⁵ So she went and did as Elijah said. And she ate. So did he and her house for a certain time.

¹⁶ The barrel of the meal was not used up, nor was the oil in the jar finished, according to the Word of the LORD which He spoke by the hand of Elijah.

146 Praise the LORD, O my soul!

² I will praise the LORD during my life. As long as I have any being, I will sing to my God.

³ Do not put your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, for there is no help in him.

⁴ His breath departs. He returns to his earth. Then, his thoughts perish.

⁵ Blessed is he who has the God of Jacob for his help; whose hope is in the LORD his God,

⁶ Who made Heaven and Earth, the sea, and all that therein is. Who keeps his fidelity forever.

⁷ Who executes justice for the oppressed, Who gives bread to the hungry. The LORD frees the prisoners.

⁸ The LORD gives sight to the blind. The LORD raises up the crooked. The LORD loves the righteous.

⁹ The LORD keeps the strangers. He relieves the fatherless and widow; but He overthrows the way of the wicked.

¹⁰ The LORD shall reign forever! O Zion, your God endures from generation to generation. Praise the LORD!

²⁴ For Christ has not entered into the Holy Places that are made with hands - which are representations of the true things - but into Heaven itself, to appear now in the sight of God for us.

²⁵ Not that He should offer himself often, as the High Priest entered into the Holy Place every year with others’ blood.

²⁶ For then He would have had to suffer often, since the foundation of the world. But now, in the end of the world, He has appeared once, to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.

²⁷ And as much as it has been appointed to man that he shall die once (and after that comes the Judgment),

²⁸ so Christ was once offered to take away the sins of many. And to those who look for Him, He shall appear a second time - without sin - for salvation.

³⁸ Moreover He said to them in His doctrine, “Beware of the scribes, who love to go around in long robes and love greetings in the markets,

³⁹ “and the chief seats in the synagogues, and the first rooms at feasts.

⁴⁰ “They devour widows’ houses, even under a color of long prayers. These shall receive the greater damnation.”

⁴¹ And as Jesus sat near the treasury, He saw how much money the people cast into the treasury. And many of the rich men cast in much.

⁴² And there came a certain poor widow. And she threw in two lepta (which make a kodrantes).

⁴³ Then He called His disciples to Him, and said to them, “Truly I say to you, that this poor widow has cast more in than all those who have cast into the treasury.

⁴⁴ “For they all cast in out of their excess. But she, out of her poverty, cast in all that she had, even all her living.”
