Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
10 They hate the one who convicts the guilty(A)
at the city gate
and despise(B) the one who speaks with integrity.
11 Therefore, because you trample on the poor(C)
and exact a grain tax from him,
you will never live in the houses of cut stone(D)
you have built;
you will never drink the wine
from the lush vineyards
you have planted.(E)
12 For I know your crimes are many
and your sins innumerable.
They oppress the righteous,(F) take a bribe,
and deprive the poor of justice(G) at the gates.
13 Therefore, the wise person will keep silent[a](H)
at such a time,
for the days are evil.
13 Lord—how long?
Turn and have compassion on Your servants.(B)
14 Satisfy us in the morning with Your faithful love
so that we may shout with joy and be glad all our days.(C)
15 Make us rejoice for as many days as You have humbled us,
for as many years as we have seen adversity.(D)
16 Let Your work be seen by Your servants,
and Your splendor by their children.(E)
17 Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us;
establish for us the work of our hands—
establish the work of our hands!(F)
12 For the word of God is living and effective(A) and sharper than any double-edged sword,(B) penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the ideas and thoughts of the heart.(C) 13 No creature is hidden from Him, but all things are naked and exposed to the eyes of Him to whom(D) we must give an account.
Our Great High Priest
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens—Jesus the Son of God—let us hold fast to the confession.(E) 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tested in every way as we are,(F) yet without sin.(G) 16 Therefore let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us at the proper time.
The Rich Young Ruler
17 As(A) He was setting out on a journey,(B) a man ran up, knelt down(C) before Him, and asked Him, “Good(D) Teacher,(E) what must I do to inherit(F) eternal life?”(G)
18 “Why do you call Me good?” Jesus asked him. “No one is good but One—God.(H) 19 You know the commandments:
Do not murder;(I)
do not commit adultery;(J)
do not steal;(K)
do not bear false witness;(L)
do not defraud;(M)
honor(N) your father and mother.”(O)[a]
20 He said to Him, “Teacher,(P) I have kept all these from my youth.”
21 Then, looking at him, Jesus loved him(Q) and said to him, “You lack one thing: Go, sell all you have and give to the poor,(R) and you will have treasure(S) in heaven.(T) Then come,[b] follow Me.”(U) 22 But he was stunned[c] at this demand, and he went away grieving,(V) because he had many possessions.(W)
Possessions and the Kingdom
23 Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it is for those who have wealth(X) to enter the kingdom of God!”(Y) 24 But the disciples were astonished at His words. Again Jesus said to them, “Children,(Z) how hard it is[d] to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich(AA) person to enter the kingdom of God.”
26 So they were even more astonished, saying to one another, “Then who can be saved?”(AB)
27 Looking at them, Jesus said, “With men it is impossible,(AC) but not with God, because all things are possible with God.”
28 Peter(AD) began to tell Him, “Look, we have left everything and followed You.”
29 “I assure you,”(AE) Jesus said, “there is no one who has left house, brothers or sisters, mother or father,[e] children, or fields because of Me and the gospel,(AF) 30 who will not receive 100 times(AG) more, now at this time(AH)—houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields, with persecutions(AI)—and eternal life(AJ) in the age to come.(AK) 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”(AL)
