Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
Version
Psalm 90:12-17

12 Teach us to number our days carefully
so that we may develop wisdom in our hearts.[a](A)

13 Lord—how long?
Turn and have compassion on Your servants.(B)
14 Satisfy us in the morning with Your faithful love
so that we may shout with joy and be glad all our days.(C)
15 Make us rejoice for as many days as You have humbled us,
for as many years as we have seen adversity.(D)
16 Let Your work be seen by Your servants,
and Your splendor by their children.(E)
17 Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us;
establish for us the work of our hands—
establish the work of our hands!(F)

Amos 3:13-4:5

13 Listen and testify(A) against the house of Jacob—
this is the declaration of the Lord God,
the God of Hosts.
14 I will punish the altars of Bethel(B)
on the day I punish Israel for its crimes;
the horns of the altar(C) will be cut off
and fall to the ground.(D)
15 I will demolish the winter house(E)
and the summer house;(F)
the houses inlaid with ivory(G) will be destroyed,
and the great houses(H) will come to an end.
This is the Lord’s declaration.

Social and Spiritual Corruption

Listen to this message, you cows of Bashan(I)
who are on the hill of Samaria,
women who oppress the poor
and crush the needy,(J)
who say to their husbands,
“Bring us something to drink.”(K)

The Lord God has sworn(L) by His holiness:(M)

Look, the days are coming[a]
when you will be taken away with hooks,(N)
every last one of you with fishhooks.(O)
You will go through breaches in the wall,(P)
each woman straight ahead,
and you will be driven along toward Harmon.
This is the Lord’s declaration.

Come to Bethel and rebel;
rebel even more at Gilgal!(Q)
Bring your sacrifices every morning,(R)
your tenths every three days.
Offer leavened bread as a thank offering,(S)
and loudly proclaim your freewill offerings,(T)
for that is what you Israelites love to do!(U)
This is the Lord’s declaration.

Matthew 15:1-9

The Tradition of the Elders

15 Then(A) Pharisees and scribes came from Jerusalem to Jesus and asked,(B) “Why do Your disciples(C) break the tradition of the elders? For they don’t wash their hands when they eat!”[a](D)

He answered them, “And why do you break God’s commandment because of your tradition? For God said:[b]

Honor your father and your mother;(E)[c] and,
The one who speaks evil of father or mother
must be put to death.(F)[d]

But you say, ‘Whoever tells his father or mother, “Whatever benefit you might have received from me is a gift committed to the temple”— he does not have to honor his father.’[e] In this way, you have revoked God’s word[f] because of your tradition. Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said:

These people[g] honor Me with their lips,
but their heart is far from Me.
They worship Me in vain,
teaching as doctrines the commands of men.(G)[h]
