Version
Psalm 90:12-17

12 ·Teach us [Make us know] ·how short our lives really are [L to count our days]
    so that we ·may be wise [L gain a wise heart].

13 Lord, how long before you ·return [turn]
    and show ·kindness [compassion] to your servants?
14 ·Fill [Satisfy] us with your ·love [loyalty] every morning.
    Then we will sing and rejoice all our ·lives [L days].
15 We have seen years of ·trouble [harm; hurt].
    Now give us as ·much [L many days of] joy as you gave us ·sorrow [affliction].
16 Show your servants ·the wonderful things you do [your miracles];
    ·show your greatness [your splendor/beauty] to their children.
17 Lord our God, ·treat us well [favor us].
    ·Give us success in what we do [L Establish the work of our hands for us];
·yes, give us success in what we do [L establish the work of our hands].

Amos 3:13-4:5

13 “Listen and ·be witnesses [testify] against the family of Jacob [C Israel],” says the Lord God, the God ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts].

14 “·When [L On the day] I punish Israel for their sins,
    I will also destroy the altars at Bethel [C an important worship center in Israel; 1 Kin. 12:25–33].
The ·corners [L horns] of the altar will be cut off,
    and they will fall to the ground.
15 I will tear down the winter house,
    together with the summer house.
The houses ·decorated with [or filled with; L of] ivory will be destroyed,
    and the great houses will ·come to an end [or be swept away],” says the Lord.

Israel Will Not Return

Listen to this message, you cows of Bashan on the Mountain of Samaria [C mocking the wealthy women of Samaria].

You ·take things from [oppress] the poor
    and crush people who are in need.
Then you command your husbands,
    “Bring us something to drink!”
The Lord God has ·promised [sworn] this:
    “Just as surely as I am a holy God,
the time will come
    when you will be taken away ·by hooks [or in baskets],
    and what is left of you with fishhooks.
You will go straight out of the city
    through ·holes [breaches] in the walls,
and you will be thrown ·on the garbage dump [on the dung heap; or out toward Harmon],” says the Lord.

“Come to the city of Bethel and ·sin [rebel; transgress];
    come to Gilgal and ·sin [rebel; transgress] even more [C Bethel and Gilgal were important worship centers in Israel].
Offer your sacrifices every morning,
    and bring ·one-tenth of your crops [your tithes] every three days.
Offer bread made with yeast as a sacrifice to show your thanks,
    and ·brag about [publicly announce] the ·special [voluntary; freewill] offerings you bring,
because this is what you love to do, ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel],” says the Lord God.

Matthew 15:1-9

Obey God’s Law(A)

15 Then some Pharisees and ·teachers of the law [scribes] came to Jesus from Jerusalem. They asked him, “Why don’t your ·followers [disciples] obey the ·unwritten laws which have been handed down to us [L traditions of the elders]? [L For] They don’t wash their hands before they eat [C a Jewish ritual for ceremonial purity].”

Jesus answered, “And why do you ·refuse to obey [break; violate] God’s command ·so that you can follow your own teachings [L for the sake of your traditions]? God said, ‘Honor your father and your mother [Ex. 20:12; Deut. 5:16],’ and ‘Anyone who ·says cruel things to [speaks evil of; curses] his father or mother must be put to death [Ex. 21:17; Lev. 20:9].’ But you say a person can tell his father or mother, ‘I have something I could use to help you, but I have ·given [dedicated; devoted] it to God already [C a practice known as Corban; see Mark 7:10–12].’ You teach that person ·not to [that he need not] honor his father or his mother. You ·rejected [invalidated; canceled; nullified] ·what God said [L the word of God] for the sake of your own ·rules [tradition]. You are hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he ·said [L prophesied] about you:

‘These people show honor to me with ·words [L their lips],
    but their hearts are far from me.
Their worship of me is ·worthless [futile; in vain].
    The things [doctrines] they teach are nothing but human ·rules [commandments; Is. 29:13].’”
