Jeremiah 11:18-20

Jeremiah’s Life is Threatened

18 The Lord made it known to me,
    and so I understood.
        Then you showed me their malicious deeds.
19 I was like a gentle lamb
    led to the slaughter.
I didn’t know that they had devised schemes
    against me. They told themselves,[a]
“Let’s destroy the tree with its fruit.
    Let’s eliminate him from the land of the living,
        so his name won’t be remembered again.”
20 Lord of the Heavenly Armies, the righteous judge,
    the one who tests feelings and the heart,
let me see your vengeance on them,
    for I’ve committed my case to you.

Psalm 54

To the Director: With stringed instruments. A Davidic instruction,[a] when the Ziphites came and told Saul, “David is hiding among us, is he not?”

A Prayer in Times of Trouble

54 God, by your name deliver me,
    and by your power vindicate me.
God, listen to my prayer,
    and pay attention to the words of my mouth.
For the arrogant have arisen against me;
    oppressors have sought to take my life.
They do not keep God in mind![b]
Interlude

Look, God is my helper;
    the Lord is with those who are guarding my life.
He will turn the evil upon those who lie in wait for me.
    Cut them off with your truth.

With a free will offering I will sacrifice to you;
    I will give thanks to your name, Lord,
        because it is good,
for he has delivered me from every trouble,
    and my eyes have seen the end of[c] my enemies.

James 3:13-4:3

Live Wisely

13 Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his noble conduct that his actions are done humbly and wisely. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and rivalry in your hearts, stop boasting and slandering the truth. 15 That kind of wisdom does not come from above. No, it is worldly, self-centered, and demonic. 16 For wherever jealousy and rivalry exist, there is disorder and every kind of evil.

17 However, the wisdom that comes from above is first of all pure, then peace-loving, gentle, willing to yield, full of compassion and good deeds,[a] and without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is grown from the seed of peace[b] planted by peacemakers.

Stop Fighting with Each Other

Where do those fights and quarrels among you come from? They come from your selfish desires that are at war in your bodies, don’t they? You want something but do not get it, so you commit murder. You covet something but cannot obtain it, so you quarrel and fight. You do not get things because you do not ask for them! You ask for something but do not get it because you ask for it for the wrong reason—for your own pleasure.

James 4:7-8

Therefore, submit yourselves to God. Resist the Devil, and he will run away from you. Come close to God, and he will come close to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Mark 9:30-37

Jesus Again Predicts His Death and Resurrection(A)

30 Then they left that place and passed through Galilee. Jesus[a] didn’t want anyone to find out about it, 31 because he was teaching his disciples, “The Son of Man will be betrayed into human hands. They will kill him, but after being dead for three days he will be raised.” 32 They didn’t understand what this statement meant, and they were afraid to ask him.

True Greatness(B)

33 Then they came to Capernaum. While Jesus[b] was at home, he asked the disciples,[c] “What were you arguing about on the road?” 34 But they kept silent, because they had argued on the road with one another about who was the greatest.

35 So he sat down, called the Twelve, and told them, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” 36 Then he took a little child and had him stand among them. He took him in his arms and told them, 37 “Whoever welcomes a child like this in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me.”
