Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
18 The Lord informed me, so I knew.
Then You helped me to see their deeds,
19 for I was like a docile[a] lamb led to slaughter.(A)
I didn’t know that they had devised plots against me:
“Let’s destroy the tree with its fruit;[b]
let’s cut him off from the land of the living(B)
so that his name will no longer be remembered.”
20 But, Lord of Hosts, who judges righteously,
who tests(C) heart[c] and mind,(D)
let me see Your vengeance on them,
for I have presented my case to You.(E)
Psalm 54
Prayer for Deliverance
For the choir director: with stringed instruments. A Davidic Maskil. When the Ziphites went and said to Saul, “Is David not hiding among us?”(A)
1 God, save me by Your name,
and vindicate me by Your might!(B)
2 God, hear my prayer;
listen to the words of my mouth.(C)
3 For strangers rise up against me,
and violent men seek my life.
They have no regard for God.[a](D)
The Wisdom from Above
13 Who is wise and has understanding among you? He should show his works by good conduct with wisdom’s gentleness.(A) 14 But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your heart, don’t brag and deny the truth.(B) 15 Such wisdom does not come from above but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.(C) 16 For where envy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every kind of evil. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without favoritism and hypocrisy.(D) 18 And the fruit of righteousness(E) is sown in peace by those who cultivate peace.
Proud or Humble
4 What is the source of wars and fights among you? Don’t they come from the cravings(F) that are at war within you?[a] 2 You desire and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. You do not have because you do not ask. 3 You ask and don’t receive because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your evil desires.(G)
The Second Prediction of His Death
30 Then(A) they left that place and made their way through Galilee, but He did not want anyone to know it.(B) 31 For He was teaching(C) His disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man(D) is being betrayed[a] into the hands of men. They will kill Him, and after He is killed, He will rise(E) three days later.”(F) 32 But they did not understand this statement, and they were afraid to ask Him.(G)
Who is the Greatest?
33 Then(H) they came to Capernaum.(I) When He was in the house,(J) He asked them, “What were you arguing about on the way?”(K) 34 But they were silent,(L) because on the way they had been arguing with one another about who was the greatest.(M) 35 Sitting down, He called the Twelve(N) and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”(O) 36 Then He took a child,(P) had him stand among them, and taking him in His arms, He said to them, 37 “Whoever welcomes[b] one little child such as this in My name(Q) welcomes Me. And whoever welcomes Me does not welcome Me, but Him who sent(R) Me.”(S)
