Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Mem
97 How I love your law, Lord![a]
I study it all day long.
98 Your commandment makes me wiser than my foes,
as it is forever with me.
99 I have more insight than all my teachers,
because I ponder your testimonies.
100 I have more understanding than my elders,
because I keep your precepts.(A)
101 I keep my steps from every evil path,
that I may observe your word.
102 From your judgments I do not turn,
for you have instructed me.
103 How sweet to my tongue is your promise,
sweeter than honey to my mouth!(B)
104 Through your precepts I gain understanding;
therefore I hate all false ways.
10 Now I will rise up, says the Lord,
now exalt myself,
now lift myself up.(A)
11 You conceive dry grass, bring forth stubble;
my spirit shall consume you like fire.
12 The peoples shall be burned to lime,
thorns cut down to burn in fire.(B)
13 Hear, you who are far off, what I have done;
you who are near, acknowledge my might.
14 In Zion sinners are in dread,
trembling grips the impious:
“Who of us can live with consuming fire?
who of us can live with everlasting flames?”(C)
15 Whoever walks righteously and speaks honestly,
who spurns what is gained by oppression,
Who waves off contact with a bribe,
who stops his ears so as not to hear of bloodshed,
who closes his eyes so as not to look on evil—(D)
16 That one shall dwell on the heights,
with fortresses of rock for stronghold,
food and drink in steady supply.
16 It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you.(A) 17 This I command you: love one another.(B)
The World’s Hatred.[a] 18 “If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first.(C) 19 If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own; but because you do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world, the world hates you.(D) 20 Remember the word I spoke to you,[b] ‘No slave is greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.(E) 21 And they will do all these things to you on account of my name,[c] because they do not know the one who sent me.(F) 22 If I had not come and spoken[d] to them, they would have no sin; but as it is they have no excuse for their sin.(G) 23 Whoever hates me also hates my Father.(H) 24 If I had not done works among them that no one else ever did, they would not have sin; but as it is, they have seen and hated both me and my Father.(I) 25 But in order that the word written in their law[e] might be fulfilled, ‘They hated me without cause.’(J)
