107 A canticle of a psalm for David himself.

² My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready: I will sing, and will give praise, with my glory.

³ Arise, my glory; arise, psaltery and harp: I will arise in the morning early.

⁴ I will praise thee, O Lord, among the people: and I will sing unto thee among the populations.

⁵ For thy mercy is great above the heavens: and thy truth even unto the clouds.

⁶ Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens, and thy glory over all the earth:

⁷ That thy beloved may be delivered. Save with thy right hand and hear me.

⁸ God hath spoken in his holiness. I will rejoice, and I will divide Sichem and I will mete out the vale of tabernacles.

⁹ Galaad is mine, and Manasses is mine and Ephraim the protection of my head. Juda is my king:

¹⁰ Moab the pot of my hope. Over Edom I will stretch out my shoe: the aliens are become my friends.

¹¹ Who will bring me into the strong city? who will lead me into Edom?

¹² Wilt not thou, O God, who hast cast us off? and wilt not thou, O God, go forth with our armies?

¹³ O grant us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man.

¹⁴ Through God we shall do mightily: and he will bring our enemies to nothing.

20 And the children of Israel, and all the multitude came into the desert of Sin, in the first month: and the people abode in Cades. And Mary died there, and was buried in the same place.

² And the people wanting water, came together against Moses and Aaron:

³ And making a sedition, they said: Would God we had perished among our brethren before the Lord.

⁴ Why have you brought out the church of the Lord into the wilderness, that both we and our cattle should die?

⁵ Why have you made us come up out of Egypt, and have brought us into this wretched place which cannot be sowed, nor bringeth forth figs, nor vines, nor pomegranates, neither is there any water to drink?

⁶ And Moses and Aaron leaving the multitude, went into the tabernacle of the covenant, and fell flat upon the ground, and cried to the Lord, and said: O Lord God, hear the cry of this people, and open to them thy treasure, a fountain of living water, that being satisfied, they may cease to murmur. And the glory of the Lord appeared over them.

⁷ And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

⁸ Take the rod, and assemble the people together, thou and Aaron thy brother, and speak to the rock before them, and it shall yield waters. And when thou hast brought forth water out of the rock, all the multitude and their cattle shall drink.

⁹ Moses therefore took the rod, which was before the Lord, as he had commanded him,

¹⁰ And having gathered together the multitude before the rock, he said to them: Hear, ye rebellious and incredulous: Can we bring you forth water out of this rock?

¹¹ And when Moses had lifted up his hand, and struck the rock twice with the rod, there came forth water in great abundance, so that the people and their cattle drank,

¹² And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron: Because you have not believed me, to sanctify me before the children of Israel, you shall not bring these people into the land, which I will give them.

¹³ This is the Water of contradiction, where the children of Israel strove with words against the Lord, and he was sanctified in them.

⁶ Now these things were done in a figure of us, that we should not covet evil things as they also coveted.

⁷ Neither become ye idolaters, as some of them, as it is written: The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.

⁸ Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed fornication, and there fell in one day three and twenty thousand.

⁹ Neither let us tempt Christ: as some of them tempted, and perished by the serpents.

¹⁰ Neither do you murmur: as some of them murmured, and were destroyed by the destroyer.

¹¹ Now all these things happened to them in figure: and they are written for our correction, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

¹² Wherefore he that thinketh himself to stand, let him take heed lest he fall.

¹³ Let no temptation take hold on you, but such as is human. And God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that which you are able: but will make also with temptation issue, that you may be able to bear it.
