Psalm 111

The Lord does great things[a]

111 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
I will thank the Lord with all that I am,
when we, his people, meet together.
The Lord does great things!
People who enjoy them,
    think carefully about them.
Everything that he does
shows that he is a very great king!
He will always do what is completely right.
The Lord causes us to remember his miracles.
He is kind and he forgives people.
He gives food to the people who serve him.
He always remembers the covenant
that he made with his people.
He said that he would use his great power
    to help his people.
He has given to them
the lands where other nations lived.
He is always honest and fair
in the things that he does.
His rules help people to live well.
They will continue to be right for all time.
People should trust those rules and obey them.
He rescued his people
    so that they became free.
He made his covenant with them
so that it would continue for ever.
His name is holy,
and people should respect him with fear.
10 If you want to live in a wise way,
    respect and obey the Lord.[b]
Everyone who lives in the way that he teaches
    will understand what is right.
People should praise the Lord for ever!

Deuteronomy 13:1-5

False prophets

13 One day, you may have a prophet among you who tells you what will happen in the future. He may have dreams about what will happen. He may promise to do miracles to show that he is right. He may say that you should start to worship other gods that you did not know about before. The miracles may happen, as he promised, but do not listen to that prophet's message. The Lord your God is using this person to test your thoughts. He wants to know if you really love him in everything that you think and everything that you do. You must serve only the Lord your God and respect him with fear. You must obey his commands and serve him faithfully. You must punish that false prophet with death. He has told you to turn against the Lord your God. The Lord rescued you from Egypt, where you were slaves. But the false prophet has tried to turn you away from the way of life that the Lord your God has commanded. So you must remove all evil things like that from among you.

Matthew 8:28-9:1

Jesus makes two men well again

28 Jesus arrived at the other side of Lake Galilee. He came to a place where the Gadarene people lived.[a] Two men who had bad spirits in them came to meet him. These men lived outside, among some graves. They were very strong and dangerous. People were too afraid to walk that way because of them. 29 When the two men saw Jesus, they immediately shouted at him, ‘You are the Son of God! What are you doing here? Have you come to punish us before the right time comes?’[b]

30 A large group of pigs was eating there, not very far away. 31 The bad spirits said to Jesus, ‘If you make us leave these men, please send us to those pigs. Let us go into them.’ 32 Jesus said to the bad spirits, ‘Go!’ So the bad spirits came out of the men and they went into the pigs. All the pigs rushed together down the hill into the lake. They all died there in the water. 33 When this happened, the men who took care of the pigs ran away. They went into the town. They told people there everything that had happened to the men with the bad spirits in them. 34 So everybody came out of the town to meet Jesus. When they saw him, they said, ‘Please go away. Leave our part of the country.’

Jesus helps a man who cannot walk

Then Jesus got back into the boat. He sailed across to the other side of the lake again. He went to Capernaum, the town where he was living.
