Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
A Prayer for Jerusalem
79 O God, the nations have come into the land of Your people. They have made Your holy house dirty. They have crushed the walls and buildings of Jerusalem. 2 They have given the dead bodies of Your servants to the birds of the heavens for food. The flesh of those who belong to You has been given to the wild animals of the earth. 3 They have poured out their blood like water all around Jerusalem. And there was no one to bury them. 4 We have become a shame to our neighbors. Those around us laugh at and make fun of us. 5 How long, O Lord? Will You be angry forever? Will Your jealousy burn like fire? 6 Pour out Your anger on the nations that do not know You, and on the nations that do not call on Your name. 7 For they have destroyed Jacob. They have laid waste the place where he lived.
8 Do not hold the sins of our fathers against us. Let Your loving-pity come fast to meet us. For we are in much need. 9 O God Who saves us, help us for the honor of Your name. Take us out of trouble and forgive our sins, for the honor of Your name. 10 Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” Make it known among the nations, in front of our eyes, that You punish for the blood that has poured from Your servants. 11 Hear the cries of those in prison. By the greatness of Your power, save those who are being sent to death. 12 And return to our neighbors seven times the shame that they have brought You, O Lord. 13 Then we Your people, the sheep of Your field, will give thanks to You forever. We will tell of Your praise to all the people of all times.
The Lord Rules in Jerusalem
4 In the last days the mountain of the Lord’s house will be the highest one of all. It will be raised above the hills, and the people will flow to it. 2 Many nations will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord and to the house of the God of Jacob. He will teach us about His ways, so that we may walk in His paths.” For the Law will go out from Zion, and the Word of the Lord from Jerusalem. 3 He will judge between many people. He will decide for strong nations that are far away. Then they will beat their swords into plows, and their spears into cutting hooks. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, and they will never learn war any more. 4 Every man will sit under his vine and under his fig tree, with no one to make him afraid. For the mouth of the Lord of All has spoken. 5 All the nations may walk in the name of their god. But we will walk in the name of the Lord our God forever and ever.
Seven Angels with Seven Troubles
15 Then I saw something else special in heaven that was great and made me wonder. There were seven angels with the seven last kinds of trouble. With these, God’s anger is finished.
2 Then I saw something that looked like a sea of glass mixed with fire. I saw many standing on the sea of glass. They were those who had won their fight with the wild animal and his false god and with his mark. All of them were holding harps that God had given to them. 3 They were singing the song of Moses, who was a servant owned by God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, “The things You do are great and powerful. You are the All-powerful Lord God. You are always right and true in everything You do. You are King of all nations. 4 Who will not honor You, Lord, with love and fear? Who will not tell of the greatness of Your name? For You are the only One Who is holy. All nations will come and worship before You. Everyone sees that You do the right things.”
5 After this I looked and saw that the Holiest Place of All in the house of God was opened. 6 The seven angels who had the seven last kinds of trouble came out of the house of God. They were wearing clothes made of clean white linen. They were wearing belts made of gold around their chests. 7 Then one of the four living beings gave to each of the seven angels a jar made of gold. These jars were filled with the anger of God Who lives forever. 8 The house of God was filled with smoke from the shining-greatness and power of God. No one was able to go into the house of God until the seven angels had completed the seven kinds of trouble.
