Psalm 63

A Psalm by David, when he was in the desert of Judah.

63 God, you are my God.
    I will earnestly seek you.
My soul thirsts for you.
    My flesh longs for you,
    in a dry and weary land, where there is no water.
So I have seen you in the sanctuary,
    watching your power and your glory.
Because your loving kindness is better than life,
    my lips shall praise you.
So I will bless you while I live.
    I will lift up my hands in your name.
My soul shall be satisfied as with the richest food.
    My mouth shall praise you with joyful lips,
    when I remember you on my bed,
    and think about you in the night watches.
For you have been my help.
    I will rejoice in the shadow of your wings.
My soul stays close to you.
    Your right hand holds me up.
But those who seek my soul to destroy it
    shall go into the lower parts of the earth.
10 They shall be given over to the power of the sword.
    They shall be jackal food.
11 But the king shall rejoice in God.
    Everyone who swears by him will praise him,
    for the mouth of those who speak lies shall be silenced.

Joel 3:9-21

Proclaim this among the nations:
    “Prepare for war!
    Stir up the mighty men.
Let all the warriors draw near.
Let them come up. 10     Beat your plowshares into swords,
    and your pruning hooks into spears.
    Let the weak say, ‘I am strong.’
11 Hurry and come, all you surrounding nations,
    and gather yourselves together.”
Cause your mighty ones to come down there, Yahweh.
12 “Let the nations arouse themselves,
    and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat;
    for there I will sit to judge all the surrounding nations.
13 Put in the sickle;
    for the harvest is ripe.
    Come, tread, for the wine press is full,
    the vats overflow, for their wickedness is great.”
14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision!
    For the day of Yahweh is near in the valley of decision.
15 The sun and the moon are darkened,
    and the stars withdraw their shining.
16 Yahweh will roar from Zion,
    and thunder from Jerusalem;
    and the heavens and the earth will shake;
    but Yahweh will be a refuge to his people,
    and a stronghold to the children of Israel.
17 “So you will know that I am Yahweh, your God,
    dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain.
Then Jerusalem will be holy,
    and no strangers will pass through her any more.
18 It will happen in that day,
    that the mountains will drop down sweet wine,
    the hills will flow with milk,
    all the brooks of Judah will flow with waters;
    and a fountain will flow out from Yahweh’s house,
    and will water the valley of Shittim.
19 Egypt will be a desolation
    and Edom will be a desolate wilderness,
    for the violence done to the children of Judah,
    because they have shed innocent blood in their land.
20 But Judah will be inhabited forever,
    and Jerusalem from generation to generation.
21 I will cleanse their blood
    that I have not cleansed,
    for Yahweh dwells in Zion.”

Matthew 24:29-35

29 “But immediately after the suffering[a] of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken;(A) 30 and then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky. Then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory. 31 He will send out his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together his chosen ones from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.

32 “Now from the fig tree learn this parable: When its branch has now become tender and produces its leaves, you know that the summer is near. 33 Even so you also, when you see all these things, know that he is near, even at the doors. 34 Most certainly I tell you, this generation[b] will not pass away until all these things are accomplished. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
