Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
David wrote this psalm when he was in the Judah wilderness.
A morning song[a]
63 God, you are my God.
I want to be near to you.
I need you to give me life,
like a thirsty person in a dry desert.
As a person needs water to live,
that is how I need you.[b]
2 When I have gone into your temple,
I have seen what you are like.
I have seen your great power and your glory.
3 Your faithful love for me is better than life itself.
So I will speak out to praise you.
4 Yes, I will thank you for as long as I live.
I will lift up my hands and I will pray to you.
5 You make me very happy,
better than a feast of good food.
I will sing happy songs to praise you.
6 When I lie on my bed,
I think about you all through the night.
7 You are the one who keeps me safe,
like a bird protects its babies under its wings.
So I sing happy songs.
8 I keep very near to you
and your strong right hand keeps me safe.
9 My enemies are trying to kill me,
but I know that they themselves will die.
They will go down into the deep hole of death.
10 Soldiers will kill them with swords.
Wild dogs will eat their dead bodies.
11 But the king will sing songs to praise God.[c]
Everybody who promises to serve God
will speak aloud to praise him.
But everyone who tells lies
will not be able to say anything!
Locusts eat all the plants in Israel
1 This is the word of the Lord that came to Joel, son of Pethuel.[a]
2 You older men, hear this! Listen, all people who live in this country.
Nothing like this has happened while you have been alive.
Nothing like this happened while your ancestors were alive.
3 Tell this to your children.
And they must tell it to their children.
And their children must tell it to their own children.
4 The great locusts have eaten what the big group of locusts left.
The young locusts have eaten what the great locusts left.
Other locusts have eaten what the young locusts left.
5 Wake up, you who have drunk too much wine!
Cry, all people who drink wine!
Cry because you will have no new wine.
Someone has taken it away from you.
6 A strong army has marched into my land.
It is powerful, and great in numbers.
It has the teeth of a strong animal.
And the teeth are long and dangerous.
7 It has broken my vines.
It has destroyed my fig trees.
It has eaten the outside of the trees.
It has thrown them away.
It has left their branches white.
8 Cry like a girl that no man ever loved.
She is crying because her promised husband is dead.
9 There will be no more gifts of food or drink.
They will not reach the house of the Lord.
The priests, the servants of the Lord,
are very, very sad.
10 Nobody can use the fields.
They are all dry.
The new wine has all gone.
The oil has all gone.
11 You farmers, you cry.
You who grow vines, cry.
Be sad for the seeds that are food.
Be sad because the fields are dry. And the plants have died.
12 The vine has become dry,
and the fig tree is dead.
The apple trees and other fruit trees,
all the trees have no more fruit.
Men have no more joy.
It has all gone.
Joel tells people to be sad about their sins
13 You priests, wear clothes that are not comfortable.
That will show that you are sad.
You cry, you who serve the Lord in his temple.
Come, you who serve in front of my God.
Sleep in the clothes that are not comfortable.
Cry for the gifts of food and drink.
Cry because they do not come to the house of your God any longer.
14 Tell everyone that they must not eat any food.
Tell the people that they must all come to hear the Lord.
Speak to the older leaders,
and all the people who live in this country.
Tell them that they must all come.
They must come to the house of the Lord your God
and they must shout out to the Lord.
6 But now Timothy has come back to us. And he has told us good news about you. He has told us that you continue to trust Christ and you love one another. He says that you always think about us in a good way. You want very much to meet us again, as we also want to meet you. 7 So we have become happy again because of you, our Christian friends. We continue to suffer and we have much trouble. But we are happy because you continue to trust Christ. 8 Yes, we are like people who have become alive again. We know that you are strong as you trust the Lord.
9 We thank God very much for you! You make us very happy when we talk to God about you. 10 We pray very much for you, during the day and during the night. We ask God to give us the chance to visit you again. We want to help you to understand the things that you still need to know. Then you will be able to trust Christ even more.
11 We pray that our Father God himself and our Lord Jesus will prepare the way for us. Then we will come to visit you. 12 We pray that the Lord will cause you to love people more and more. We love you very much. We pray that you will love each other and all people, as we love you. 13 Then God will cause you to become strong inside yourselves. You will live in a completely good way. One day our Lord Jesus will come back with all the people who belong to him. Then you will stand in front of God, our Father. He will say that you are not guilty of anything that is wrong.
