Amos 5:18-24

Dreadful Day of Adonai

18 Oy to you—longing for the Day of Adonai![a]
What would it be for you?
The Day of Adonai will be darkness and not light.[b]
19 It will be as when a man is fleeing from a lion—
and meets a bear!
Or he comes home,
leans his hand on the wall,
    and a snake bites him!
20 Will not the Day of Adonai be darkness, not light?
Gloom, not brightness?

Justice Better Than Sacrifices

21 “I hate, I despise your festivals!
I take no delight in your sacred assemblies.
22 Even if you offer me burnt offerings and your grain offerings,
I will not accept them,
nor will I look
at peace offerings of your fattened animals.
23 Take away from Me the noise of your songs!
I will not listen to the melody of your harps.
24 But let justice roll like water
and righteousness like an ever-flowing torrent.

Psalm 70

My Help and My Deliverer

Psalm 70

For the music director, of David, for a memorial.
O God, come quickly to deliver me,
Adonai, to help me.
May they be put to shame and disgrace
    who seek my life.
May they be turned back in humiliation
    who delight in my hurt.
May those who say, “Aha! Aha!”
be turned away because of their shame.
But may all who seek You
rejoice and be glad in You.
May those who love Your salvation
always say, “Let God be magnified.”
But I am poor and needy—
    God, come quickly to me.
You are my help and my deliverer—
    Adonai, do not delay.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

The Shofar Call of Messiah’s Return

13 Now we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who are asleep, so that you may not grieve like the rest who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Yeshua died and rose again, so with Him God will also bring those who have fallen asleep in Yeshua. [a] 15 For this we tell you, by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord shall in no way precede those who are asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself shall come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the blast of God’s shofar,[b] and the dead in Messiah shall rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left behind, will be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air—and so we shall always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.

Matthew 25:1-13

Parable of the Ten Virgins

25 “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. [a] Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish ones took their lamps, they took no oil with them. But the wise ones took oil in jars along with their lamps.

“Now while the bridegroom was taking a long time, they all got drowsy and started falling asleep. But in the middle of the night there was a shout, ‘Look, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps. Now the foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, since our lamps are going out.’ But the wise ones replied, ‘No, there won’t be enough for us and for you. Instead, go to those who sell, and buy some for yourselves.’

10 “But while they were going off to buy, the bridegroom came. And those who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast, and the door was shut. 11 Now later, the other virgins came, saying, ‘Sir, Sir, open up for us!’

12 “But he replied, ‘Amen, I tell you, I do not know you.’ 13 Therefore stay alert, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”
