Micah 3:5-12

Thus says the Lord:

Regarding the prophets
    who mislead My people—
the ones who have something to eat
    proclaim “Peace,”
but if one does not feed them,
    then they prepare for war against him.
Therefore you will have night without vision,
    and you will have darkness without divination;
the sun will set upon the prophets,
    and black upon them will be the day.
The seers will be shamed
    and the diviners disgraced,
and they will all cover their beards,
    for there is no answer from God.

But as for me, I am filled with power,
    with the Spirit of the Lord,
    and with justice and might,
to declare to Jacob his transgression
    and to Israel his sin.

Please hear this, heads of the house of Jacob
    and rulers of the house of Israel,
who detest justice
    and warp all that is straight,
10 who build Zion with bloodguilt
    and Jerusalem with wickedness.
11 Her leaders judge for a bribe,
    her priests teach for a price,
    and her prophets practice divination for money.
Yet upon the Lord they lean, saying,
    “Is not the Lord in our midst?
    Evil will not come upon us.”
12 Therefore, because of you,
    Zion will be plowed like a field,
Jerusalem will be mounds of ruins,
    and the mountain of the house will become wooded heights.

Psalm 43

Psalm 43

Vindicate me, O God,
    and plead my cause against an ungodly nation;
    deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man.
For You are the God of my refuge;
    why have You rejected me?
Why do I walk about mourning
    because of the oppression of the enemy?
Send out Your light and Your truth.
    Let them lead me;
let them bring me to Your holy hill,
    and to Your dwelling place.
Then I will go to the altar of God,
    to the God of my joyful gladness;
with the harp I will give thanks to You,
    O God, my God.

Why are you cast down, O my soul?
    And why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God;
    for I will yet give Him thanks,
    the salvation of my countenance and my God.

1 Thessalonians 2:9-13

For you remember, brothers, our labor and toil. Laboring night and day so as not to be an expense to any of you, we preached to you the gospel of God. 10 You and God are witnesses of how pure, upright, and blameless we ourselves behaved among you who believe. 11 As you know, we exhorted, comforted, and commanded every one of you, as a father does his own children, 12 that you would walk in a manner worthy of God, who has called you to His kingdom and glory.

13 For this reason we thank God without ceasing because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you received it not as the word of men, but as it truly is, the word of God, which effectively works also in you who believe.

Matthew 23:1-12

The Denouncing of the Scribes and Pharisees(A)

23 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to His disciples, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. Therefore, whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do their works. For they speak, but do nothing. They fasten heavy loads that are hard to carry and lay them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves will not move them with their finger.

“They do all their works to be seen by men. They make their Scripture boxes broad and lengthen the tassels on their prayer shawls. They love the places of honor at feasts, and the prominent seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the marketplaces, and being called ‘Rabbi’ by men.

“But do not be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brothers. And call no man on earth your father, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. 10 Nor be called teachers, for you have one Teacher, the Christ. 11 He who is greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 For he who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
