Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
The Lord—Our Shepherd
23 The Lord is my Shepherd. I will have everything I need. 2 He lets me rest in fields of green grass. He leads me beside the quiet waters. 3 He makes me strong again. He leads me in the way of living right with Himself which brings honor to His name. 4 Yes, even if I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will not be afraid of anything, because You are with me. You have a walking stick with which to guide and one with which to help. These comfort me. 5 You are making a table of food ready for me in front of those who hate me. You have poured oil on my head. I have everything I need. 6 For sure, You will give me goodness and loving-kindness all the days of my life. Then I will live with You in Your house forever.
17 Fear and the deep hole and the trap are before you, O people of the earth. 18 He who runs from the news of trouble will fall into a deep hole. And he who comes out of the hole will be caught in a trap. For the windows of heaven are opened, and the earth shakes. 19 The earth is broken in pieces. The earth is torn apart. The earth is very shaken. 20 The earth turns from one side to the other side like a drunk man. It shakes like a tent because its sin is heavy upon it. It will fall, never to rise again. 21 In that day the Lord will punish the powers of heaven above, and the kings of the earth below. 22 They will be gathered together like those in a prison. They will be kept in a deep, dark prison, and after many days they will be punished. 23 Then the moon will be dark and the sun will not shine, for the Lord of All will rule on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem. And in front of His leaders, He will let His shining-greatness be seen.
Jesus Teaches about Going without Food So You Can Pray Better (A)
18 The followers of John and the proud religious law-keepers were not eating food so they could pray better. Some people came to Jesus and said, “Why do the followers of John and the proud religious law-keepers go without food so they can pray better, but Your followers do not?” 19 Jesus said to them, “Can the friends at a wedding go without food when the man just married is with them? As long as they have him with them, they will not go without food. 20 The days will come when the man just married will be taken from them. Then they will not eat food so they can pray better. 21 No man sews a piece of new cloth on an old coat. If it comes off, it will make the hole bigger. 22 No man puts new wine into old skin bags. The skin would break and the wine would run out. The bags would be no good. New wine must be put into new skin bags.”
