Psalm 25

Dependence on the Lord

Of David.

Lord, I appeal to you.[a](A)
My God, I trust in you.
Do not let me be disgraced;(B)
do not let my enemies gloat over me.(C)
No one who waits for you
will be disgraced;(D)
those who act treacherously without cause
will be disgraced.(E)

Make your ways known to me, Lord;
teach me your paths.(F)
Guide me in your truth and teach me,(G)
for you are the God of my salvation;(H)
I wait for you all day long.(I)
Remember, Lord, your compassion
and your faithful love,
for they have existed from antiquity.[b](J)
Do not remember the sins of my youth(K)
or my acts of rebellion;(L)
in keeping with your faithful love, remember me
because of your goodness, Lord.(M)

The Lord is good and upright;(N)
therefore he shows sinners the way.(O)
He leads the humble in what is right(P)
and teaches them his way.(Q)

Ezekiel 12:17-28

Ezekiel Dramatizes Israel’s Anxiety

17 The word of the Lord came to me: 18 “Son of man, eat your bread with(A) trembling and drink your water with anxious shaking. 19 Then say to the people of the land, ‘This is what the Lord God says about the residents of Jerusalem in the land of Israel: They will eat their bread with anxiety and drink their water in dread, for their[a][b] land will be stripped of everything(B) in it because of the violence of all who live there. 20 The inhabited cities will be destroyed, and the land will become dreadful. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’”

A Deceptive Proverb Stopped

21 Again the word of the Lord came to me: 22 “Son of man, what is this proverb you people have about the land of Israel,(C) which goes, ‘The days keep passing by,(D) and every vision fails’? 23 Therefore say to them, ‘This is what the Lord God says: I will put a stop to this proverb, and they will not use it again in Israel.’(E) But say to them, ‘The days have arrived,(F) as well as the fulfillment of every vision. 24 For there will no longer be any false vision or flattering divination(G) within the house of Israel. 25 But I, the Lord, will speak whatever message I will speak, and it will be done.(H) It will no longer be delayed.(I) For in your days, rebellious house, I will speak a message and bring it to pass. This is the declaration of the Lord God.’”

26 The word of the Lord came to me: 27 “Son of man, notice that the house of Israel is saying, ‘The vision that he sees concerns many years from now;(J) he prophesies about distant times.’ 28 Therefore say to them, ‘This is what the Lord God says: None of my words will be delayed any longer. The message I speak will be fulfilled. This is the declaration of the Lord God.’”

James 4:11-16

11 Don’t criticize one another, brothers and sisters. Anyone who defames or judges a fellow believer[a] defames and judges the law. If you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.(A) 12 There is one lawgiver and judge[b] who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?(B)

Our Will and God’s Will

13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will travel to such and such a city and spend a year there and do business and make a profit.”(C) 14 Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring—what your life will be! For you are like vapor that appears for a little while, then vanishes.(D)

15 Instead, you should say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16 But as it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.(E)
