Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
The Lord Extolled for His Goodness.
A Psalm of Praise, of David.
145 I will (A)extol You, (B)my God, O King,
And I will (C)bless Your name forever and ever.
2 Every day I will bless You,
And I will (D)praise Your name forever and ever.
3 (E)Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised,
And His (F)greatness is unsearchable.
4 One (G)generation shall praise Your works to another,
And shall declare Your mighty acts.
5 On the (H)glorious [a]splendor of Your majesty
And (I)on Your wonderful works, I will meditate.
6 Men shall speak of the [b]power of Your (J)awesome acts,
And I will (K)tell of Your greatness.
7 They shall [c]eagerly utter the memory of Your (L)abundant goodness
And will (M)shout joyfully of Your righteousness.
8 The Lord is (N)gracious and merciful;
Slow to anger and great in lovingkindness.
3 The shields of [a]his mighty men are colored red,
The warriors are dressed in (A)scarlet,
The chariots are enveloped in [b]flashing steel
[c]When he is prepared to march,
And the cypress (B)spears are brandished.
4 The (C)chariots race madly in the streets,
They rush wildly in the [d]squares,
Their appearance is like torches,
They dash to and fro like lightning flashes.
5 He remembers his (D)nobles;
They (E)stumble in their march,
They hurry to her wall,
And the [e]mantelet is set up.
6 The gates of the rivers are opened
And the palace is dissolved.
7 It is fixed:
She is stripped, she is carried away,
And her handmaids are (F)moaning like the sound of doves,
(G)Beating on their [f]breasts.
8 Though Nineveh was like a pool of water throughout her days,
Now they are fleeing;
“Stop, stop,”
But (H)no one turns back.
9 Plunder the silver!
Plunder the (I)gold!
For there is no limit to the treasure—
Wealth from every kind of desirable object.
10 She is (J)emptied! Yes, she is desolate and waste!
(K)Hearts are melting and knees knocking!
Also anguish is in [g]the whole body
And all their (L)faces are grown pale!
11 Where is the den of the lions
And the feeding place of the (M)young lions,
Where the lion, lioness and lion’s cub prowled,
With nothing to disturb them?
12 The lion tore enough for his cubs,
[h]Killed enough for his lionesses,
And filled his lairs with prey
And his dens with torn flesh.
13 “Behold, (N)I am against you,” declares the Lord of hosts. “I will (O)burn up her chariots in smoke, a sword will devour your young lions; I will (P)cut off your prey from the land, and no longer will the voice of your messengers be heard.”
5 (A)Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; (B)examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you—unless indeed you [a](C)fail the test? 6 But I trust that you will realize that we ourselves [b]do not fail the test. 7 Now we pray to God that you do no wrong; not that we ourselves may appear approved, but that you may do what is right, even though we may [c]appear unapproved. 8 For we can do nothing against the truth, but only for the truth. 9 For we rejoice when we ourselves are (D)weak but you are strong; this we also pray for, [d]that you be (E)made complete. 10 For this reason I am writing these things while absent, so that when present (F)I need not use (G)severity, in accordance with the (H)authority which the Lord gave me for building up and not for tearing down.
