Psalm 78:1-8

78 1 He showeth how God of his mercy chose his Church of the posterity of Abraham, 8 Reproaching the stubborn rebellion of their fathers, that the children might not only understand. 11 That God of his free mercy made his Covenant with their ancestors, 17 But also seeing them so malicious and perverse, might be ashamed, and so turn wholly to God.  In this Psalm the holy Ghost hath comprehended, as it were, the sum of all God’s benefits, to the intent the ignorant and gross people might see in few words the effect of the whole histories of the Bible.

A Psalm to give [a]instruction, committed to Asaph.

Hear my [b]doctrine, O my people: incline your ears unto the words of my mouth.

I will open my mouth in a parable: I will declare high sentences of old.

Which we have heard and known, and our [c]fathers have told us.

We will not hide them from their children, but to the generation to come we will show the praise of the Lord, his power also, and his wonderful works that he hath done:

How he established a [d]testimony in Jacob, and ordained a Law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should teach their children:

That the [e]posterity might know it, and the children, which should be born, should stand up, and declare it to their children.

That they might [f]set their hope on God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:

And not to be as their [g]fathers, a disobedient and rebellious generation: a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not faithful unto God.

Psalm 78:17-29

17 Yet they [a]sinned still against him, and provoked the Highest in the wilderness,

18 And tempted God in their hearts in [b]requiring meat for their lust.

19 (A)They spake against God also, saying, Can God [c]prepare a table in the wilderness?

20 (B)Behold, he smote the rock, that the water gushed out, and the streams overflowed: can he give bread also? or prepare flesh for his people?

21 Therefore the Lord heard, and was angry, and the (C)fire was kindled in Jacob, and also wrath came upon Israel,

22 Because they believed not in God, and [d]trusted not in his help.

23 Yet he had commanded the [e]clouds above, and had opened the doors of heaven,

24 And had rained down Manna upon them for to eat, and had given them of the wheat of heaven.

25 (D)Man did eat the bread of Angels: he sent them meat enough.

26 He caused the [f]East wind to pass in the heaven: and through his power he brought in the South wind.

27 He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowl as the sand of the sea.

28 And he made it fall in the midst of their camp, even round about their habitations.

29 So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their desire.

Deuteronomy 8:1-10

1 God humbleth the Israelites to try what they have in their heart. 5 God chastiseth them as his children. 14 The heart ought not to be proud of God’s benefits. 19 The forgetfulness of God’s benefits causeth destruction.

Ye shall keep all the commandments which I command thee this day, for [a]to do them: that ye may live, and be multiplied, and go in, and possess the land which the Lord sware unto your fathers.

And thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee this forty years in the wilderness, for to humble thee, and to [b]prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments or no.

Therefore he humbled thee, and made thee hungry, and fed thee with Manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know it, that he might teach thee that man lived not by [c]bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord, doth a man live.

Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot [d]swell those forty years.

Know therefore in thine heart, that as a man nurtureth his son, so the Lord thy God [e]nurtureth thee.

Therefore shalt thou keep the commandments of the Lord thy God, that thou mayest walk in his ways, and fear him.

For the Lord thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land in the which are rivers of water and fountains, and [f]depths that spring out of valleys and mountains:

A land of wheat and barley, and of vineyards, and fig trees, and pomegranates: a land of oil, olive and honey:

A land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarcity, neither shalt thou lack anything therein: a land [g]whose stones are iron, and out of whose mountains thou shalt dig brass.

10 And when thou hast eaten and filled thyself, thou shalt [h]bless the Lord thy God for the good land, which he hath given thee.

Romans 1:8-15

[a]First I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, because your faith is [b]published throughout the [c]whole world.

For God is my witness (whom I serve in my [d]spirit in the [e]Gospel of his Son) that without ceasing I make mention of you.

10 Always in my prayers, beseeching that by some means, one time or other I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God, to come unto you.

11 For I long to see you, that I might bestow among you some spiritual gift, that you might be strengthened:

12 That is, that [f]I might be comforted together with you, through our mutual faith, both yours and mine.

13 Now my brethren, I would that ye should not be ignorant, how that I have oftentimes purposed to come unto you (but have been let hitherto) that I might have some fruit also among you, as I have among the other Gentiles.

14 I am debtor both to the Grecians, and to the Barbarians, both to the wise men and to the unwise.

15 Therefore, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the Gospel to you also that are at [g]Rome.
