Psalm 119:1-8

The Word of God

ALEPH[a]

119 God has blessed people who always do what is right.
    They obey the Lord's Law.
They agree to live by his rules.[b]
They love to pray to him.
God has blessed people like that.
Also, they do nothing that is wrong.
They live in a way that please the Lord.
You, Lord, have told us to obey your teaching carefully.
I want to be able to obey your laws all the time.
When I remember all your commands,
    I will not be ashamed.
When I learn your good rules,
I will do what is right and I will thank you.
Yes, I will obey your laws.
Please do not turn away from me!

Genesis 26:1-5

Isaac and Abimelech

26 There was another famine in the land. This had happened before, when Abraham was alive. Now Isaac went to Gerar to visit Abimelech, the king of the Philistines. The Lord appeared to Isaac. He said, ‘Do not go to Egypt. Instead, live in the land that I will show to you. Stay in this land, and I will be with you. I will bless you. I will give these lands to you and your descendants. I made a strong promise to your father Abraham. I will make that promise become true. I will give you many descendants. They will be as many as the stars in the sky. And I will give these lands to them. Because of your descendants, I will bless everyone on the earth.[a] This will happen because Abraham obeyed me. He obeyed all my laws and rules, and he did what I told him to do.’

James 1:12-16

12 Some people continue to trust God even when troubles happen. God will bless those people, if they show that they really trust him. He will give them the gift which is life with him. He has promised to give this gift to all people who love him.

13 When troubles happen to you, you may want to do something bad. But do not say, ‘God is causing me to do wrong things.’ Nothing can make God do anything bad. And God does not try to make anyone do a wrong thing. 14 It is our own thoughts that make us do bad things. When we want to do something wrong, our thoughts lead us in a bad way. 15 We may agree to do what our bad thoughts tell us to do. When we do that, it becomes a sin. Then, we may not stop doing those bad things. If we continue to live like that, the result of our sins is death.[a]

16 My Christian friends, do not make a mistake.
