Psalm 123

A Song of Ascents.

123 I lift up my eyes to you,
you who sit in the heavens.
Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master,
as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to Yahweh, our God,
until he has mercy on us.
Have mercy on us, Yahweh, have mercy on us,
for we have endured much contempt.
Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scoffing of those who are at ease,
with the contempt of the proud.

Job 25-26

25 Then Bildad the Shuhite answered,

“Dominion and fear are with him.
He makes peace in his high places.
Can his armies be counted?
On whom does his light not arise?
How then can man be just with God?
Or how can he who is born of a woman be clean?
Behold, even the moon has no brightness,
    and the stars are not pure in his sight;
How much less man, who is a worm,
and the son of man, who is a worm!”

26 Then Job answered,

“How have you helped him who is without power!
How have you saved the arm that has no strength!
How have you counseled him who has no wisdom,
    and plentifully declared sound knowledge!
To whom have you uttered words?
Whose spirit came out of you?

“The departed spirits tremble,
those beneath the waters and all that live in them.
Sheol[a] is naked before God,
    and Abaddon[b] has no covering.
He stretches out the north over empty space,
and hangs the earth on nothing.
He binds up the waters in his thick clouds,
and the cloud is not burst under them.
He encloses the face of his throne,
and spreads his cloud on it.
10 He has described a boundary on the surface of the waters,
and to the confines of light and darkness.
11 The pillars of heaven tremble
and are astonished at his rebuke.
12 He stirs up the sea with his power,
and by his understanding he strikes through Rahab.
13 By his Spirit the heavens are garnished.
His hand has pierced the swift serpent.
14 Behold, these are but the outskirts of his ways.
How small a whisper do we hear of him!
But the thunder of his power who can understand?”

John 5:19-29

19 Jesus therefore answered them, “Most certainly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing of himself, but what he sees the Father doing. For whatever things he does, these the Son also does likewise. 20 For the Father has affection for the Son, and shows him all things that he himself does. He will show him greater works than these, that you may marvel. 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom he desires. 22 For the Father judges no one, but he has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He who doesn’t honor the Son doesn’t honor the Father who sent him.

24 “Most certainly I tell you, he who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and doesn’t come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. 25 Most certainly I tell you, the hour comes, and now is, when the dead will hear the Son of God’s voice; and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, even so he gave to the Son also to have life in himself. 27 He also gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is a son of man. 28 Don’t marvel at this, for the hour comes in which all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and will come out; those who have done good, to the resurrection of life; and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment.
