Psalm 61

A Prayer for Protection[a]

61 Hear my cry, O God;
    listen to my prayer!
In despair and far from home
    I call to you!

Take me to a safe refuge,
    for you are my protector,
    my strong defense against my enemies.

Let me live in your sanctuary all my life;
    let me find safety under your wings.
You have heard my promises, O God,
    and you have given me what belongs to those who honor you.

Add many years to the king's life;
    let him live on and on!
May he rule forever in your presence, O God;
    protect him with your constant love and faithfulness.

So I will always sing praises to you,
    as I offer you daily what I have promised.

2 Kings 5:15-19

15 He returned to Elisha with all his men and said, “Now I know that there is no god but the God of Israel; so please, sir, accept a gift from me.”

16 Elisha answered, “By the living Lord, whom I serve, I swear that I will not accept a gift.”

Naaman insisted that he accept it, but he would not. 17 So Naaman said, “If you won't accept my gift, then let me have two mule-loads of earth to take home with me,[a] because from now on I will not offer sacrifices or burnt offerings to any god except the Lord. 18 So I hope that the Lord will forgive me when I accompany my king to the temple of Rimmon, the god of Syria, and worship him. Surely the Lord will forgive me!”

19 “Go in peace,” Elisha said. And Naaman left.

He had gone only a short distance,

Acts 26:24-29

24 As Paul defended himself in this way, Festus shouted at him, “You are mad, Paul! Your great learning is driving you mad!”

25 Paul answered, “I am not mad, Your Excellency! I am speaking the sober truth. 26 King Agrippa! I can speak to you with all boldness, because you know about these things. I am sure that you have taken notice of every one of them, for this thing has not happened hidden away in a corner. 27 King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know that you do!”

28 Agrippa said to Paul, “In this short time do you think you will make me a Christian?”

29 “Whether a short time or a long time,” Paul answered, “my prayer to God is that you and all the rest of you who are listening to me today might become what I am—except, of course, for these chains!”
