Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Book 1 (Psalms 1-41)
Psalm 1[a]
1 How blessed[b] is the one[c] who does not follow[d] the advice[e] of the wicked,[f]
or stand in the pathway[g] with sinners,
or sit in the assembly[h] of scoffers.[i]
2 Instead[j] he finds pleasure in obeying the Lord’s commands;[k]
he meditates on[l] his commands[m] day and night.
3 He is like[n] a tree planted by flowing streams;[o]
it[p] yields[q] its fruit at the proper time,[r]
and its leaves never fall off.[s]
He succeeds in everything he attempts.[t]
4 Not so with the wicked!
Instead[u] they are like wind-driven chaff.[v]
5 For this reason[w] the wicked cannot withstand[x] judgment,[y]
nor can sinners join the assembly of the godly.[z]
6 Certainly[aa] the Lord guards the way of the godly,[ab]
but the way of the wicked ends in destruction.[ac]
10 “For the Lord says, ‘Only when the seventy years of Babylonian rule[a] are over will I again take up consideration for you.[b] Then I will fulfill my gracious promise to you and restore[c] you to your homeland.[d] 11 For I know what I have planned for you,’ says the Lord.[e] ‘I have plans to prosper you, not to harm you. I have plans to give you[f] a future filled with hope.[g] 12 When you call out to me and come to me in prayer,[h] I will hear your prayers.[i] 13 When you seek me in prayer and worship, you will find me available to you. If you seek me with all your heart and soul,[j] 14 I will make myself available to you,’[k] says the Lord.[l] ‘Then I will reverse your plight[m] and will regather you from all the nations and all the places where I have exiled you,’ says the Lord.[n] ‘I will bring you back to the place from which I exiled you.’
15 “You say, ‘The Lord has raised up prophets of good news[o] for us here in Babylon.’ 16 But just listen to what the Lord has to say about[p] the king who occupies David’s throne and all your fellow countrymen who are still living in this city of Jerusalem[q] and were not carried off into exile with you. 17 The Lord of Heaven’s Armies[r] says, ‘I will bring war,[s] starvation, and disease on them. I will treat them like figs that are so rotten[t] they cannot be eaten. 18 I will chase after them with war,[u] starvation, and disease. I will make all the kingdoms of the earth horrified at what happens to them. I will make them examples of those who are cursed, objects of horror, hissing scorn, and ridicule among all the nations where I exile them. 19 For they have not paid attention to what I said to them through my servants the prophets whom I sent to them over and over again,’[v] says the Lord.[w] ‘And you exiles[x] have not paid any attention to them either,’ says the Lord.[y]
Final Challenge and Blessing
13 Stay alert, stand firm in the faith, show courage, be strong. 14 Everything you do should be done in love.
15 Now, brothers and sisters,[a] you know about the household of Stephanus, that as the first converts[b] of Achaia, they devoted themselves to ministry for the saints. I urge you 16 also to submit to people like this, and to everyone who cooperates in the work and labors hard. 17 I was glad about the arrival of Stephanus, Fortunatus, and Achaicus because they have supplied the fellowship with you that I lacked.[c] 18 For they refreshed my spirit and yours. So then, recognize people like this.
19 The churches in the province of Asia[d] send greetings to you. Aquila and Prisca[e] greet[f] you warmly in the Lord, with the church that meets in their house. 20 All the brothers and sisters[g] send greetings. Greet one another with a holy kiss.
21 I, Paul, send this greeting with my own hand.
22 Let anyone who has no love for the Lord be accursed. Our Lord, come![h]
23 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you.
24 My love be with all of you in Christ Jesus.[i]
