Proverbs Monthly
26 Like snow in summer or rain in harvest,
so honor[a] is not fitting for a fool.[b]
2 Like a fluttering bird or like a flying swallow,
so a curse without cause[c] does not come to rest.[d]
3 A whip for the horse and a bridle for the donkey,
and a rod for the backs of fools![e]
4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly,[f]
lest you yourself also be like him.[g]
5 Answer a fool according to his folly,[h]
lest he be wise in his own opinion.[i]
6 Like cutting off the feet or drinking violence,[j]
so is sending[k] a message by the hand of a fool.[l]
7 Like[m] legs dangle uselessly[n] from the lame,
so[o] a proverb[p] dangles[q] in the mouth of fools.
8 Like tying a stone in a sling,[r]
so is giving honor to a fool.
9 Like[s] a thorn[t] has gone up into the hand of a drunkard,
so[u] a proverb has gone up[v] into the mouth of a fool.[w]
10 Like[x] an archer who wounds at random,[y]
so[z] is the one who hires[aa] a fool or hires any passerby.
11 Like a dog that returns to its vomit,[ab]
so a fool repeats his folly.[ac]
12 You have seen[ad] a man wise in his own opinion[ae]—
there is more hope for a fool[af] than for him.
13 The sluggard[ag] has said,[ah] “There is a lion in the road!
A lion in the streets!”[ai]
14 Like[aj] a door that turns on its hinges,[ak]
so[al] a sluggard turns[am] on his bed.
15 The sluggard has plunged[an] his hand in the dish;
he is too lazy[ao] to bring it back to his mouth.[ap]
16 The sluggard is wiser in his own opinion[aq]
than seven people who respond with good sense.[ar]
17 Like[as] one who grabs a wild dog by the ears,[at]
so is the person passing by who becomes furious[au] over a quarrel not his own.
18 Like a madman[av] who shoots
firebrands and deadly arrows,[aw]
19 so is a person[ax] who has deceived his neighbor,
and said, “Was I not only joking?”[ay]
20 Where there is no wood, a fire goes out,
and where there is no gossip,[az] contention ceases.[ba]
21 Like charcoal is to burning coals, and wood to fire,
so is a contentious person[bb] to kindle strife.[bc]
22 The words of a gossip are like choice morsels;
and they have gone down into a person’s innermost being.[bd]
23 Like a coating of glaze[be] over earthenware
are fervent[bf] lips with an evil heart.[bg]
24 The one who hates others disguises[bh] it with his lips,
but he stores up[bi] deceit within him.[bj]
25 When[bk] he speaks graciously,[bl] do not believe him,[bm]
for there are seven[bn] abominations[bo] within him.
26 Though his[bp] hatred may be concealed[bq] by deceit,
his evil will be uncovered[br] in the assembly.
27 The one who digs a pit[bs] will fall into it;
the one who rolls a stone—it will come back on him.
28 A lying tongue[bt] hates those crushed by it,
and a flattering mouth works ruin.[bu]
27 Do not boast[bv] about tomorrow;[bw]
for you do not know[bx] what a day may bring forth.
2 Let another[by] praise you, and not your own mouth;[bz]
someone else,[ca] and not your own lips.
3 A stone is heavy and sand is weighty,
but vexation[cb] by a fool is more burdensome[cc] than the two of them.
4 Wrath is cruel and anger is overwhelming,[cd]
but who can stand before jealousy?[ce]
5 Better is open[cf] rebuke
than hidden[cg] love.
6 Faithful[ch] are the wounds of a friend,
but the kisses[ci] of an enemy are excessive.[cj]
7 The one whose appetite[ck] is satisfied loathes honey,
but to the hungry mouth[cl] every bitter thing is sweet.
8 Like a bird that wanders[cm] from its nest,
so is a person who wanders from his home.[cn]
9 Ointment and incense make the heart rejoice,[co]
likewise the sweetness of one’s friend from sincere counsel.[cp]
10 Do not forsake your friend and your father’s friend,
and do not enter your brother’s house in the day of your disaster;
a neighbor nearby is better than a brother far away.[cq]
11 Be wise, my son,[cr] and make my heart glad,
so that I may answer[cs] anyone who taunts me.[ct]
12 A shrewd person saw[cu] danger—he hid himself;
the naive[cv] passed right on by[cw]—they had to pay[cx] for it.
13 Take a man’s[cy] garment when he has given security for a stranger,
and hold him in pledge on behalf of a stranger.[cz]
14 If someone blesses[da] his neighbor with a loud voice early in the morning,[db]
it will be counted as a curse to him.[dc]
15 A continual dripping on a rainy day—
a contentious wife[dd] makes herself like that.[de]
16 Whoever contains her has contained[df] the wind[dg]
or can grasp[dh] oil with his right hand.[di]
17 As[dj] iron sharpens[dk] iron,
so a person[dl] sharpens his friend.[dm]
18 The one who tends a fig tree[dn] will eat its fruit,[do]
and whoever takes care of[dp] his master will be honored.
19 As in water the face is reflected as a face,[dq]
so a person’s heart[dr] reflects the person.
20 As[ds] Death and Destruction are never satisfied,[dt]
so the eyes of a person[du] are never satisfied.[dv]
21 As the crucible is for silver and the furnace is for gold,[dw]
so a person[dx] must put[dy] his praise[dz] to the test.
22 If you should pound[ea] the fool in the mortar
among the grain[eb] with the pestle,
his foolishness would not depart from him.[ec]
23 Pay careful attention to[ed] the condition of your flocks,[ee]
set your mind[ef] on your herds,
24 for riches do not last[eg] forever,
nor does a crown last[eh] from generation to generation.
25 When the hay is removed and new grass appears,
and the grass from the hills is gathered in,
26 the lambs will be for your clothing,
and the goats will be for the price of a field.[ei]
27 And there will be enough goat’s milk for your food,[ej]
for the food of your household,
and for the sustenance[ek] of your servant girls.
