Old/New Testament
59 1 The wicked perish through their own iniquities. 12 The confession of sins. 16 God alone will preserve his Church though all men fail.
1 Behold, (A)the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save: neither is his ear heavy, that it cannot hear.
2 But (B)your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.
3 For your hands are defiled with [a]blood, and your fingers with iniquity: your lips have spoken lies, and your tongue hath murmured iniquity.
4 No man calleth for justice: no man [b]contendeth for truth: they trust in vanity, and speak vain things: they conceive mischief, and [c]bring forth iniquity.
5 They hatch cockatrice [d]eggs, and weave the spider’s [e]web: he that eateth of their eggs, died, and that which is trode upon, breaketh out into a serpent.
6 Their webs shall be no garment, neither shall they cover themselves with their labors: for their works are works of iniquities, and the work of cruelty is in their hands.
7 Their feet turn to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are wicked thoughts: desolation and destruction is in their paths.
8 The way of peace they know not, and there is none equity in their goings: they have made them crooked paths: whosoever goeth therein, shall not know peace.
9 Therefore is [f]judgment far from us, neither doth [g]justice come near unto us: we wait for light, but lo, it is darkness: for brightness, but we walk in darkness.
10 We grope for the wall like the [h]blind, and we grope as one without eyes: we stumble at the noon day as in the twilight: we are in solitary places, as dead men.
11 We roar all like [i]bears, and mourn like doves: we look for equity, but there is none: for health, but it is far from us.
12 For our trespasses are many before thee, and our [j]sins testify against us: for our trespasses are with us, and we know our iniquities
13 In trespassing and lying against the Lord, and we have departed away from our God, and have spoken of cruelty and rebellion, conceiving and uttering out of the heart [k]false matters.
14 Therefore [l]judgment is turned backward, and justice standeth far off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter.
15 Yea, truth faileth, and he that refraineth from evil, maketh himself [m]a prey: and when the Lord saw it, it displeased him, that there was no judgment.
16 And when he saw that there was no man, he wondered that none would offer himself. [n]Therefore his arm did [o]save it, and his righteousness itself did sustain it.
17 For he put on righteousness, as an habergeon, and an [p]helmet of salvation upon his head, and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloak.
18 As to make recompense, as to requite the fury of the adversaries with a recompense to his enemies: he will fully repair the [q]islands.
19 So shall they fear the Name of the Lord from the West, and his glory from the rising of the Sun; for the enemy shall [r]come like a flood; but the Spirit of the Lord shall chase him away.
20 And the Redeemer shall come unto Zion, and unto [s]them that turn from iniquity in Jacob, saith the Lord.
21 And I will make this my Covenant with them, saith the Lord, My Spirit that is upon thee, and my words, which I have put in thy mouth, [t]shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of the seed of thy seed, saith the Lord, from henceforth even forever.
60 3 The Gentiles shall come to the knowledge of the Gospel. 8 They shall come to the Church in abundance. 16 They shall have abundance though they suffer for a time.
1 Arise, O Jerusalem; be bright, for thy [u]light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.
2 For behold, darkness shall cover the [v]earth, and gross darkness the people; but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.
3 And the Gentiles shall walk in [w]thy light, and Kings at the brightness of thy rising up.
4 Lift up thine eyes round about, and behold: all [x]these are gathered, and come to thee: thy sons shall come from far, and thy daughters shall be nourished at thy side.
5 Then thou shalt see and shine: thine heart shall be astonied [y]and enlarged, because the multitude of the sea shall be converted unto thee, and the riches of the Gentiles shall come unto thee.
6 The [z]multitude of camels shall cover thee: and the dromedaries of Midian and of Ephah: all they of Sheba shall come: they shall bring gold and incense, and show forth the praises of the Lord.
7 All the sheep of [aa]Kedar shall be gathered unto thee: the rams of Nebajoth shall serve thee: they shall come up to be accepted upon mine [ab]altar: and I will beautify the house of my glory.
8 Who are these [ac]that fly like a cloud, and as the doves to their windows?
9 Surely the isles shall wait for me, and the ships [ad]of Tarshish, as at the beginning, that they may bring thy sons from far, and their silver and their gold with them unto the Name of the Lord thy God, and to the Holy one of Israel, because he hath glorified thee.
10 And the sons of strangers shall build up thy walls, and their [ae]Kings shall minister unto thee: for in my wrath I smote thee, but in my mercy I had compassion on thee.
11 Therefore thy gates shall be open continually: neither day nor night shall they be shut, that men may bring unto thee the riches of the Gentiles, and that their kings may be brought.
12 For the nation and the [af]kingdom, that will not serve thee, shall perish: and those nations shall be utterly destroyed.
13 The [ag]glory of Lebanon shall come unto thee, the fir tree, the elm and the box tree together to beautify the place of my Sanctuary: for I will glorify the place of my [ah]feet.
14 The sons also of them that afflicted thee, shall come and bow unto thee: and all they that despised thee, shall fall [ai]down at the soles of thy feet: and they shall call thee; The city of the Lord, Zion of the Holy one of Israel.
15 Whereas thou hast been forsaken and hated, so that no man went by thee, I will make thee an eternal glory, and a joy from generation to generation.
16 Thou shalt also suck the milk of the Gentiles, and shalt suck the [aj]breasts of Kings: and thou shalt know, that I the Lord am thy Savior, and thy Redeemer, the mighty one of Jacob.
17 For brass will I bring gold, and for iron will I bring silver, and for wood brass, and for stones iron. I will also make thy government [ak]peace, and thine exactors righteousness.
18 Violence shall no more be heard of in thy land, neither desolation, nor destruction within thy borders: but thou shalt [al]call salvation, thy walls, and praise, thy gates.
19 Thou shalt have no more Sun to shine by day, neither shall the brightness of the [am]Moon shine unto thee: for the Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and thy God, thy glory.
20 Thy Sun shall never go down, neither shall thy Moon be hid: for the Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy sorrow shall be ended.
21 Thy people also shall be all righteous: they shall possess the land forever, the [an]grass of my planting shall be the work of mine hands, that I may be glorified.
22 A little one shall become as a [ao]thousand, and a small one as a strong nation: I the Lord will hasten it in due time.
61 1 He prophesieth that Christ shall be anointed, and sent to preach. 10 The joy of the faithful.
1 The (C)Spirit of the Lord God is [ap]upon me, therefore hath the Lord anointed me: he hath sent me to preach good tidings unto the poor, to bind up the [aq]broken hearted, to preach liberty to the [ar]captives, and to them that are bound, the opening of the prison,
2 To preach the [as]acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of [at]vengeance of our God, to comfort all that mourn,
3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, and to give unto them beauty for [au]ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of gladness for the spirit of heaviness, that they might be called [av]trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.
4 And they shall build the old waste places, and raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the cities that were desolate and waste through many [aw]generations.
5 And the strangers shall [ax]stand and feed your sheep, and the sons of the strangers shall be your plowmen, and dressers of your vines.
6 But ye shall be named the [ay]Priests of the Lord, and men shall say unto you, The ministers of our God: Ye shall eat the [az]riches of the Gentiles, and shall be exalted with their glory.
7 For your shame you shall receive [ba]double, and for confusion, [bb]they shall rejoice in [bc]their portion: for in their land they shall possess the [bd]double: everlasting joy shall be unto them.
8 For I the Lord love judgment, and hate [be]robbery for burnt offering, and I will direct their work in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.
9 And [bf]their seed shall be known among the Gentiles, and their buds among the people. All that see them, shall know them, that they are the seed which the Lord hath blessed.
10 [bg]I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, and my soul shall be joyful in my God: for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, and covered me with the robe of righteousness: he hath decked me like a bridegroom, and as a bride attireth herself with her jewels.
11 For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth to grow that which is sown in it: so the Lord God will cause righteousness to grow, and praise before all the heathen.
3 1 He desireth them to further the preaching of the Gospel with their prayers, 6 and to withdraw themselves from those, who through idleness, 11 and curiosity pervert good order: 14 Whom he excludeth from the company of the faithful.
1 Furthermore, [a]brethren, (A)pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free passage and be glorified, even as it is with you.
2 And that we may be delivered from [b]unreasonable and evil men: [c]for all men have not faith.
3 But the Lord is faithful, which will stablish you, and keep you from [d]evil.
4 [e]And we are persuaded of you through the Lord, that ye both do, and will do the things which we warn you of.
5 [f]And the Lord guide your hearts to the love of God, and the waiting for of Christ.
6 [g]We warn you, brethren, in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walked inordinately, and not after the instruction, which he received of us.
7 [h]For ye yourselves know, (B)how ye ought to follow us: (C)for we behaved not ourselves inordinately among you,
8 Neither took we bread of any man for nought: but we wrought with labor and travail night and day, because we would not be chargeable to any of you.
9 Not because we have not authority, but that we might make ourselves an ensample unto you to follow us.
10 For even when we were with you, this we warned you of, that if there were any, which would not work, that he should not [i]eat.
11 For we hear, that there are some which walk among [j]you inordinately, and work not at all, [k]but are busybodies.
12 [l]Therefore them that are such, we warn and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that they work with quietness, and eat their own bread.
13 [m]And ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.
14 [n]If any man obey not this our saying in this letter, note him, and have no [o]company with him, [p]that he may be ashamed.
15 [q]Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.
16 [r]Now the Lord himself of peace give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all.
17 [s]The salutation of me Paul, with mine own hand, which is the token in every Epistle: so I write,
18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all, Amen.
