Psalm 40-42

40 I waited patiently for the LORD, and He inclined to me and heard my cry.

Also, He brought me out of the horrible pit—out of the miry clay—and set my feet upon the rock and ordered my goings.

And He has put in my mouth a new song of praise to our God. Many shall see it and fear and shall trust in the LORD.

Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust and does not regard the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.

You have made many, O LORD my God, Your wonderful works; so that no one can count to You, in order, Your thoughts toward us. I would declare and speak of them, but they are more than I am able to express.

Sacrifice and offering You did not desire (my ears You have prepared). Burnt offering and sin offering You have not required.

Then I said, “Lo, I come. In the roll of the Book it is written of me.

“I desired to do Your good will, O my God. Indeed, Your Law is within my heart.”

I have declared righteousness in the great congregation. Lo, I will not refrain my lips. O LORD, You know.

10 I have not hidden Your righteousness within my heart. I have declared Your truth and Your salvation. I have not concealed Your mercy and Your truth from the great Congregation.

11 Do not withdraw Your tender mercy from me, O LORD. Let Your mercy and Your truth always preserve me.

12 For innumerable troubles have surrounded me. My sins have taken such hold upon me that I am not able to look up. They are more in number than the hairs of my head. Therefore, my heart has failed me.

13 Let it please You, O LORD, to deliver me. Hurry, O LORD, to help me.

14 Let those who seek my soul to destroy it be confounded and put to shame together. Let those who desire my hurt be driven backward and put to rebuke.

15 Let those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!” be destroyed as a reward for their shame,

16 Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You, and let those who love Your salvation, say always, “The LORD be praised!”

17 Though I be poor and needy, the LORD thinks on me. You are my Helper and my Deliverer. My God, do not delay. To him who excels: A Psalm of David.

41 Blessed is he who judges wisely of the poor. The LORD shall deliver him in the time of trouble.

The LORD will keep him and preserve him alive. He shall be blessed upon the Earth; and You will not deliver him to the will of his enemies.

The LORD will strengthen him upon the bed of sorrow. You have turned all his bed in his sickness.

I said, “LORD have mercy upon me. Heal my soul, for I have sinned against You.”

My enemies speak evil of me, saying, “When shall he die, and his name perish?”

And if he come to see me, he speaks lies; his heart heaps iniquity within him. When he comes forth, he tells it.

All those who hate me whisper together against me. They imagine my hurt against me, saying,

“A mischief lies upon him,” and, “He who lies shall rise no more.”

Indeed, my familiar friend whom I trusted, who ate of my bread, has lifted up the heel against me.

10 Therefore, O LORD, have mercy upon me and raise me up. So shall I reward them.

11 By this I know that You favor me: because my enemy does not triumph against me.

12 And as for me, You uphold me in my integrity, and set me before Your face forever.

13 Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, world without end! So be it. Even so be it! To him who excels: A Psalm to give instruction, committed to the sons of Korah.

42 As the deer brays for the rivers of water, so panted my soul after You, O God.

My soul thirsts for God, even for the living God. When shall I come and appear before the presence of God?

My tears have been my food day and night, while they say to me daily, “Where is your God?”

When I remembered these things, I poured out my very heart; because I had gone with the multitude and led them into the House of God with the voice of singing and praise, as a multitude that keeps a feast.

Why are you cast down, my soul, and unquiet within me? Wait on God; for I will still give Him thanks for the help of His presence.

My God, my soul is cast down within me because I remembered You from the land of Jordan, and Hermon, and from the Mount Mizar.

One deep calls another deep by the noise of Your waterspouts. All Your waves and Your floods have gone over me.

The LORD will grant His lovingkindness in the day; and in the night shall I sing of Him a prayer to the God of my life.

I will say to God, my Rock, “Why have You forgotten me? Why do I go mourning when the enemy oppresses?”

10 As a sword shattering my bones, my enemies reproach me, saying daily to me, “Where is your God?”

11 Why are you cast down, my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Wait on God. For I will yet give thanks to Him, to the Face of my Deliverer and my God.

Acts 27:1-26

27 Now when it was decided that we should sail into Italy, they delivered Paul and some other prisoners to a Centurion from the band of Augustus named Julius.

And we boarded a ship of Adramyttium, intending to sail along the coasts of Asia, and launched forth, and had Aristarchus of Macedonia (a Thessalonian) with us.

And the next day we arrived at Sidon. And Julius treated Paul kindly and gave him liberty to go to his friends, so that they might refresh him.

And from there we launched, and sailed to the leeward side of Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.

Then we sailed over the sea, by Cilicia and Pamphilia, and came to Myra, in Lycia.

And the Centurion found a ship of Alexandria there, sailing into Italy. And he put us in it.

And when we had sailed slowly for many days, and had arrived off Cnidus with difficulty (because the wind did not allow it), we sailed to the leeward side of Crete, near Salmone,

And with much difficulty, we sailed beyond it and came to a place called the Fair Havens (near the city, Lasea).

So, after much time had been spent, and sailing was now dangerous (and also because the Fast had now passed), Paul admonished them,

10 saying, “Sirs! I perceive that this voyage will cause injury, and much loss, not only of the cargo and the ship, but also of our lives.”

11 But the Centurion believed the governor and the master of the ship rather than those things which were spoken by Paul.

12 And because the harbor was not suitable to winter in, many advised to depart from there, if by some means they might reach Phoenix to winter, which is a harbor of Crete, looking toward the southwest and northwest.

13 And when the southern wind blew softly, they determined conditions were right, weighed anchor, and sailed close by Crete.

14 But soon thereafter a stormy wind arose, called Euroclydon.

15 And when the ship was caught, and could not resist the wind, we let her go, and were carried away.

16 And we ran under the shelter of a little isle named Clauda, and had much difficulty securing the skiff,

17 which they took up with everyone’s help. And undergirding the ship (fearing they might have fallen into Syrtis), they set sail and so were carried.

18 The next day, when we were tossed with a strong storm, they lightened the ship.

19 And the third day, we cast out the tackling of the ship with our own hands.

20 And then, when neither Sun nor stars appeared for many days (and no small storm was upon us), all hope that we would be saved was taken away.

21 But after a long abstinence from food, Paul stood in the midst of them, and said, “Sirs! You should have listened to me, and not have set sail from Crete, incurring this hurt and loss.

22 “But now, I admonish you to be of good courage! For there among you shall be no loss of anyone’s life, only of the ship.

23 “For the Angel of God (Whose I am, and Whom I serve) stood by me this night,

24 Saying, ‘Fear not, Paul! For you must be brought before Caesar! And lo, all who sail with you God has given to you freely.’

25 “Therefore, sirs, be of good courage! For I believe God, that it shall be as it has been told to me.

26 “However, we must be cast ashore on a certain island.”
