Version
Job 41-42

41 [a] “Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook?
Or[b] can you tie down its mouth with a cord?[c]
Can you put a rope in its nose?
Or[d] can you pierce its jawbone with a hook?
Will it make numerous pleas for mercy to you?
Or will it speak gentle words to you?
Will it make a covenant with you?
Will you take it as a slave forever?
Will you play with it as with birds
and put it on a leash for your girls?
Will guildsmen bargain over it?
Will they divide it between tradesmen?
Can you fill its kin with harpoons
or[e] its head with fish spears?
Lay your hands on it;
think about the battle—you will not do it again!
“Look, the hope of capturing it[f] is false.
Will one be hurled down even at its sight?
10 Is it not fierce when somebody stirs it?
Who then is he who would stand before it?[g]
11 Who has come to confront me, that[h] I should repay him?
Under all the heavens, it belongs to me.[i]
12 “I will not keep quiet concerning its limbs
or[j] concerning the extent of its might and the gracefulness of its frame.
13 Who can strip off its outer covering?[k]
Who can penetrate its double harness?
14 Who can open the doors of its face?
Its teeth all around are fearsome.
15 Its back[l] has scales of shields;
it is shut up closely as with a seal.
16 They are close to one another[m]
even[n] the air cannot come between them.
17 They are joined one to another;[o]
they cling together and cannot be separated.
18 “Its snorting flashes forth light,
and its eyes are red like dawn.[p]
19 Torches go from its mouth;
sparks of fire shoot out.
20 Smoke comes from its nostrils
as from a kettle boiling and burning bulrushes.
21 Its breath kindles charcoal,
and a flame comes from its mouth.
22 “Strength abides in its neck,
and dismay[q] dances before it.[r]
23 Its flesh’s folds of skin cling together;
it is cast on it—it will not be moved.
24 Its heart is cast as stone;
yes,[s] it is cast as the lower millstone.
25 When it raises itself,[t] the mighty ones are terrified;
they retreat because of its thrashing.
26 Reaching it with the sword does not avail,
nor with the spear, the dart, or[u] the javelin.
27 It regards iron as straw,
bronze as rotten wood.
28 An arrow[v] will not make it flee;
sling stones are turned to stubble for it.
29 Clubs are regarded as stubble,
and it laughs at the short sword’s rattle.
30 “Its underparts are shards of a potsherd;
it moves over mud like a threshing sledge.
31 It makes the deep boil like a cooking pot;
it makes the sea like a pot of ointment.
32 Behind it, it leaves a glistening wake;[w]
one would think that the deep has gray hair.
33 On the ground it has no equal[x]
a[y] creature without fear.
34 It observes all the lofty;
it is king over all that are proud.”[z]

Job’s Repentance and Restoration

42 Then[aa] Job answered Yahweh and said,

“I know that you can do all things,
and any scheme from you will not be thwarted.
‘Who is this darkening counsel without knowledge?’
Therefore I uttered, but[ab] I did not understand;
things too wonderful for me,[ac] but I did not know.
‘Hear and I will speak;
I will question you, then[ad] inform me.’
By the ear’s hearing I heard of you,
but[ae] now my eye has seen you.
Therefore I despise myself
and repent in dust and ashes.”

And then[af] after Yahweh spoke these words to Job, Yahweh said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My wrath has been kindled[ag] against you[ah] and against the two of your friends, for you[ai] have not spoken to me what is right as my servant Job has. So then,[aj] take for yourselves seven bulls and seven rams, and go to my servant Job and offer a burnt offering for yourselves. And my servant Job will pray for you,[ak] for I will certainly accept his prayer,[al] so that it will not be done with you[am] according to your folly, for you[an] have not spoken to me what is right as my servant Job has.”

So[ao] Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went and did just as Yahweh had told them, and Yahweh accepted Job’s prayer.[ap]

10 Then[aq] Yahweh returned Job’s fortune when he prayed to him on behalf of his friends. Thus[ar] Yahweh increased all that Job had twice as much as before.[as] 11 So[at] all his brothers and all his sisters and all those who had known him before[au] came to him, and they ate bread[av] with him in his house and showed sympathy to him and comforted him for all the disaster[aw] that Yahweh had brought upon him. Then[ax] each one gave to him one piece of money, and each one gave to him one ornamental ring of gold.

12 So[ay] Yahweh blessed Job’s latter days more than his beginning. Thus he had[az] fourteen thousand sheep and goats and six thousand camels and a thousand pair of oxen and a thousand female donkeys. 13 And he had[ba] seven sons and three daughters. 14 And he called the name of the first Jemimah and the name of the second Keziah and the name of the third Qeren-Happuk. 15 And beautiful women were not found in all the land like Job’s daughters, and their father gave to them an inheritance in the midst of their brothers.

16 And Job lived after this one hundred and forty years, and he saw his sons and his grandsons[bb] for four generations. 17 Then[bc] Job died old and full of days.

Acts 16:22-40

22 And the crowd joined in attacking them, and the chief magistrates tore off their clothing and[a] gave orders to beat them[b] with rods. 23 And after they[c] had inflicted many blows on them, they threw them[d] into prison, giving orders to the jailer to guard them securely. 24 Having received such an order, he[e] put them in the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.[f]

The Conversion of the Philippian Jailer

25 Now about midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and[g] singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. 26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately all the doors were opened and all the bonds[h] were unfastened. 27 And after[i] the jailer was awake and saw the doors of the prison open, he drew his[j] sword and[k] was about to kill himself, because he[l] thought the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul called out with a loud voice, saying, “Do no harm to yourself, for we are all here!” 29 And demanding lights, he rushed in and, beginning to tremble,[m] fell down at the feet of Paul and Silas. 30 And he brought them outside and[n] said, “Sirs, what must I do so that I can be saved?” 31 And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, you and your household!” 32 And they spoke the message of the Lord to him, together with all those in his house. 33 And he took them at that very hour of the night and[o] washed their[p] wounds, and he himself was baptized at once, and all those of his household.[q] 34 And he brought them up into his[r] house and[s] set a meal before them,[t] and rejoiced greatly that he had believed in God with his whole household.

Paul and Silas Receive an Official Apology

35 And when it[u] was day, the chief magistrates sent the police officers, saying, “Release those men.” 36 And the jailer reported these words to Paul: “The chief magistrates have sent an order[v] that you should be released. So come out now and[w] go in peace!” 37 But Paul said to them, “They beat us in public without due process—men who are Roman citizens—and[x] threw us[y] into prison, and now they are wanting to release us secretly? Certainly not! Rather let them come themselves and[z] bring us out!” 38 So the police officers reported these words to the chief magistrates, and they were afraid when they[aa] heard that they were Roman citizens. 39 And they came and[ab] apologized to[ac] them, and after they[ad] brought them[ae] out they asked them[af] to depart from the city. 40 And when they[ag] came out of the prison, they went to Lydia and when they[ah] saw them,[ai] they encouraged the brothers and departed.
