1 Kings 3-5

Solomon then made a marriage alliance with Pharaoh, king of Egypt. And he took Pharaoh’s daughter and brought her into the City of David until he had finished building his own house, and the House of the LORD, and the wall of Jerusalem all around.

The people still sacrificed in the high places, because there was no House built to the Name of the LORD until those days.

And Solomon loved the LORD, walking in the ordinances of David his father. Except, he sacrificed and offered incense in the high places.

And the king went to Gibeon, to sacrifice there, for that was the chief high place. Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings upon that altar.

In Gibeon, the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream, by night. And God said, “Ask what I shall give you.”

And Solomon said, “You have shown to Your servant David, my father, great mercy when he walked before You in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with You. And You have kept this great mercy for him and have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.

“And now, O LORD my God, You have made Your servant king instead of David, my father. And I am but a young child and do not know how to go out and in.

“And Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You have chosen, a great people, who cannot be told nor numbered for multitude.

“Give, therefore, to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, so that I may discern between good and bad. For who is able to judge this, Your mighty people?”

10 And this pleased the LORD well, that Solomon had desired this thing.

11 And God said to him, “Because you have asked for this thing—and have not asked for long life for yourself or for riches for yourself or for the life of your enemies—but have asked for understanding for yourself, to hear judgment,

12 “behold, I have done according to your words. Lo, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has been no one like you before. Nor shall there arise anyone like you after you.

13 And I have also given you that for which you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that among the kings there shall be no one like you all your days.

14 “And if you will walk in My ways, to keep My Ordinances and My Commandments, as your father David walked, I will prolong your days.”

15 And when Solomon awoke, behold, it was a dream. And he came to Jerusalem and stood before the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD and offered Burnt Offerings, and made Peace Offerings, and made a feast to all his servants.

16 Then two harlots came to the king and stood before him.

17 And one woman said, “Oh my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house. And I delivered a child with her in the house.

18 “And the third day after I had delivered, this woman delivered also. And we were in the house together. No stranger was with us in the house except us two.

19 “And this woman’s son died in the night. For she lay on him.

20 “And she rose at midnight and took my son from my side while your handmaid slept and laid him in her bosom and laid her dead son in my bosom.

21 ‘And when I arose in the morning to nurse my son, behold, he was dead. And when I had looked closely at him in the morning, behold, it was not my son whom I had borne.”

22 Then the other woman said, “No! But my son lives! And your son is dead!” Again, she said, “No! But your son is dead and mine alive!” Thus they spoke before the king.

23 Then the king said, “She says, ‘This who lives is my son, and the dead is your son.’ And the other says, ‘No, but the dead is your son, and the living is my son.’”

24 Then the king said, “Bring me a sword.” And they brought out a sword before the king.

25 And the king said, “Divide the living child in two, and give one half to one, and the other half to the other.”

26 Then, the woman whose child was living spoke to the king, for her compassion was kindled toward her son. And she said, “Oh my lord, give her the living child and do not kill him!” But the other said, “Let it be neither mine nor yours, but divide it.”

27 Then the king answered, and said, “Give her the living child, and do not kill him. This is his mother.”

28 And all Israel heard the judgment which the king had judged. And they feared the king. For they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do justice.

And King Solomon was king over all Israel.

And these were his princes: Azariah the son of Zadok the Priest,

Elihoreph and Ahijah, the sons of Shisha were scribes. Jehoshaphat, the son of Ahilud, was the recorder.

Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, was over the army. And Zadok and Abiathar were Priests.

And Azariah, the son of Nathan, was over the officers. And Zabud the son of Nathan, Priest, was the king’s friend.

And Ahishar was over the household. And Adoniram, the son of Abda, was over the tribute.

And Solomon had twelve officers over all Israel, who provided food for the king and his household: each man had a month in the year to provide food.

And these are their names: the son of Hur on mount Ephraim,

the son of Deker in Makaz and Shaalbim and Beth Shemesh and Elon and Beth Hanan,

10 the son of Hesed in Arubboth (to whom belonged Sochoh and all the land of Hepher),

11 the son of Abinadab in all the region of Dor (who had Taphath, the daughter of Solomon, as a wife),

12 Baana, the son of Ahilud in Taanach, Megiddo, and all Beth Shean (which is by Zaretan, beneath Jezreel, from Beth Shean to Abel Meholah, as far as the other side of Jokneam,

13 the son of Geber in Ramoth Gilead (and his were the towns of Jair), the son of Manasseh (who are in Gilead), and under him was the region of Argob (which is in Bashan, sixty great cities with walls and bars of bronze),

14 Ahinadab, the son of Iddo, in Mahanaim,

15 Ahimaaz in Naphtali (and he took Basemath, the daughter of Solomon, as a wife),

16 Baanah, the son of Hushai, in Asher and Aloth,

17 Jehoshaphat, the son of Paruah, in Issachar,

18 Shimei, the son of Elah, in Benjamin,

19 Geber, the son of Uri, in the country of Gilead, the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, and of Og king of Bashan (and was officer alone in the land).

20 Judah and Israel were many—as the sand of the sea in number—eating, drinking and making merry.

21 And Solomon reigned over all kingdoms, from the river to the land of the Philistines to the border of Egypt. And they brought presents and served Solomon all the days of his life.

22 And Solomon’s food for one day were thirty measures of fine flour, sixty measures of meal,

23 ten fat oxen, twenty oxen of the pastures, and a hundred sheep (besides deer, bucks, gazelles, and fat fowl).

24 For he ruled in all the region on the other side of the river, from Tiphsah to Gaza, over all the kings on the other side the river. And he had peace all around him on every side.

25 And Judah and Israel dwelt without fear, each man under his vine, and under his fig tree, from Dan to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon.

26 And Solomon had forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen.

27 And these officers provided food for King Solomon, and for all who came to King Solomon’s table, every man his month. They lacked nothing.

28 Also, they brought barley and straw for the horses and mules to the place where the officers were, every man according to his charge.

29 And God gave Solomon very much wisdom and understanding and a large heart, as the sand that is on the seashore.

30 And Solomon’s wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the East, and all the wisdom of Egypt.

31 For he was wiser than any man: Ethan the Ezrahite, Heman, Chalcol, or Darda, the sons of Mahol. And he was famous throughout all nations all around.

32 And Solomon spoke three thousand proverbs and a thousand five songs.

33 And he spoke of trees, from the cedar tree that is in Lebanon to the hyssop that springs out of the wall. He also spoke of beasts, and of birds, and of creeping things, and of fish.

34 And people came from all nations to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all kings of the Earth who had heard of his wisdom.

And Hiram, king of Tyre, sent his servants to Solomon (for he had heard that they had anointed him king in the room of his father) because Hiram had always loved David.

And Solomon sent to Hiram, saying,

“You know that David, my father, could not build a House to the Name of the LORD his God because of the wars which were around him on every side, until the LORD had put them under the soles of his feet.

“But now the LORD my God has given me rest on every side. There is neither adversary nor evil to resist.

“And behold, I intend to build a House to the Name of the LORD my God, as the LORD spoke to David my father, saying, ‘Your son, whom I will set upon your throne for you, he shall build a House to My Name.’

“Now, therefore, command that they cut me cedar trees out of Lebanon. And my servants shall be with your servants, and I will give you the wages for your servants, according to all that you shall appoint. For you know that there are none among us who can cut timber like the Sidonians!”

And when Hiram heard the words of Solomon, he rejoiced greatly, and said, “Blessed be the LORD this day, Who has given David a wise son over this mighty people!”

And Hiram sent to Solomon, saying, “I have considered the things for which you sent to me, and will accomplish all your desire concerning the cedar trees and fir trees.

“My servants shall bring them down from Lebanon to the sea. And I will transport them by sea in rafts to the place that you shall tell me and will have them discharged there. And you shall receive them. And you shall do me the pleasure of ministering food for my family.”

10 So Hiram gave Solomon cedar trees and fir trees, his full desire.

11 And Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand measures of wheat for food to his household, and twenty measures of beaten oil. Thus, Solomon gave much to Hiram year after year.

12 And the LORD gave Solomon wisdom, as He promised him. And there was peace between Hiram and Solomon. And those two made a covenant.

13 And King Solomon raised a sum from all Israel. And the sum was thirty thousand men,

14 whom he sent to Lebanon, ten thousand a month, changing regularly. They were a month in Lebanon, and two months at home. And Adoniram was over the sum.

15 And Solomon had seventy thousand who bore burdens, and eighty thousand masons on the mountain

16 (besides the princes whom Solomon appointed over the work, three thousand three hundred, who ruled the people who fashioned the work).

17 And the king commanded them, and they brought great stones and costly stones to make the foundations of the House: hewn stones.

18 And Solomon’s workmen and the workmen of Hiram and the masons cut and prepared timber and stones for the building of the House.

Luke 20:1-26

20 And it happened that on one of those days, as He taught the people in the Temple, and preached the Gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon Him, with the elders,

and spoke to Him, saying, “Tell us by what authority You do these things? Or, who is he who has given You this authority?”

And He answered, and said to them, “I also will ask you one thing. Therefore, tell me.

“The baptism of John, was it from Heaven, or of man?

And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we shall say, ‘From Heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’

“But if we shall say, ‘Of man,’ all the people will stone us. For they are persuaded that John was a Prophet.”

Therefore they answered that they could not tell from where it was.

Then Jesus said to them, “Nor shall I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

Then He began to speak this parable to the people, “A certain man planted a vineyard, hired farmers, and went into a strange country for a long time.

10 “And at the proper time, he sent a servant to the farmers to have them give him of the fruit of the vineyard. But the farmers beat him and sent him away empty.

11 “Again, he sent yet another servant. And they beat him, and treated him badly, and sent him away empty.

12 “Moreover he sent the third. And they wounded him and cast him out.

13 “Then the Lord said of the vineyard, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. It may be that they will respect him.’

14 “But when the farmers saw him, they reasoned with themselves, saying, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, so that the inheritance may be ours.’

15 “So they cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. Therefore, what shall the Lord of the vineyard do to them?

16 “He will come and destroy these farmers and will give his vineyard to others.” But when they heard it, they said, “May it never be!”

17 And He looked at them, and said, “What, then, is the meaning of that which is written, ‘The stone that the builders refused, is made the head cornerstone?’

18 “Whoever shall fall upon that stone, shall be broken. And whomever it shall fall upon will be ground into powder.”

19 Then that same hour, the chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on Him, but they feared the people. For they perceived that He had spoken this parable against them.

20 And they watched Him and sent forth spies to act like righteous men and take Him in His talk (and deliver Him to the power and authority of the governor).

21 And they asked Him, saying, “Master, we know that You say and teach right, without partiality. And You teach the way of God truly.

22 “Is it lawful for us to give Caesar tribute or not?”

23 But He perceived their craftiness, and said to them, “Why do you tempt Me?

24 “Show me a penny. Whose image and superscription does it have?” They answered, “Caesar’s.”

25 Then He said to them, “Then, give to Caesar those things which are Caesar’s, and to God those which are God’s.”

26 And they could not catch Him in His words before the people. But they marveled at His answer and were silent.
