9 Of the hunger and captivity of Israel.
1 Rejoice not, O Israel for joy [a]as other people: for thou hast gone a whoring from thy God: thou hast loved [b]a reward upon every corn floor.
2 [c]The floor, and the winepress shall not feed them, and the new wine shall fail in her.
3 They will not dwell in the Lord’s land, but Ephraim will return to Egypt, and they will eat unclean things in Assyria.
4 They shall not offer [d]wine to the Lord, neither shall their sacrifices be pleasant unto him: but they shall be unto them as the bread of mourners: all that eat thereof, shall be polluted: for their bread [e]for their souls shall not come into the house of the Lord.
5 What will ye do [f]then in the solemn day, and in the day of the feast of the Lord?
6 For lo, they are gone from [g]destruction: but Egypt shall gather them up, and Memphis shall bury them: the nettle shall possess the pleasant places of their silver, and the thorn shall be in their tabernacles.
7 The days of visitation are come: the days of recompense are come: Israel shall know it: [h]the Prophet is a fool: the spiritual man is mad, for the multitude of thine iniquity: therefore the hatred is great.
8 The watchman of Ephraim [i]should be with my God: but the Prophet is the snare of a fowler in all his ways, and hatred in the house of his God.
9 They [j]are deeply set: they are corrupt as in the days of Gibeah: therefore he will remember their iniquity, he will visit their sins.
10 I found Israel like [k]grapes in the wilderness: I saw your fathers as the first ripe in the fig tree at her first time: but they went to Baal Peor, and separated themselves unto that shame, and their abominations were according to [l]their lovers.
11 Ephraim their glory shall flee away like a bird: from the birth [m]and from the womb, and from the conception.
12 Though they bring up their children, yet I will deprive them from being men: yea, woe to them, when I depart from them.
13 Ephraim, as I saw, is as a tree [n]in Tyre planted in a cottage: but Ephraim shall bring forth his children to the murderer.
14 O Lord, give them: what wilt thou give them? give them a [o]barren womb and dry breasts.
15 All their wickedness is in [p]Gilgal: for there do I hate them: for the wickedness of their inventions, I will cast them out of mine House: I will love them no more: all their princes are rebels.
16 Ephraim is smitten, their root is dried up: they can bring no fruit: yea, though they bring forth, yet will I slay even the dearest of their body.
17 My God will cast them away, because they did not obey him: and they shall wander among the nations.
10 1 Against Israel and his idols. 14 His destruction for the same.
1 Israel is a [q]empty vine, yet hath it brought forth fruit unto itself, and according to the multitude of the fruit thereof he hath increased the altars: according to the [r]goodness of their land they have made fair images.
2 Their heart is [s]divided: now shall they be found faulty: he shall break down their altars; he shall destroy their images.
3 For now they shall say, We have no [t]King because we feared not the Lord: and what should a King do to us?
4 They have spoken words, swearing falsely in making [u]a covenant: thus [v]judgment groweth as wormwood in the furrows of the field.
5 The inhabitants of Samaria shall [w]fear because of the calf of Beth Aven: for the people thereof shall mourn over it, and the [x]Chemarims thereof, that rejoiced on it for the glory thereof, because it is departed from it.
6 It shall be also brought to Assyria, for a present unto king Jareb: Ephraim shall receive shame, and Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel.
7 Of Samaria, the king thereof is destroyed, as the foam upon the water.
8 The high places also of [y]Aven shall be destroyed, even the sin of Israel: the thorn and the thistle shall grow upon their altars, and they shall say to the mountains, (A)Cover us, and to the hills, Fall upon us.
9 O Israel, thou hast [z]sinned from the days of Gibeah: there they [aa]stood: the battle in Gibeah against the children of iniquity did not [ab]touch them.
10 It is my desire [ac]that I should chastise them, and the people shall be gathered against them, when they shall gather themselves in their two [ad]furrows.
11 And Ephraim is as a heifer used to delight in [ae]threshing: but I will pass by her [af]fair neck: I will make Ephraim to ride: Judah shall plow, and Jacob shall break his clods.
12 Sow to yourselves in righteousness: reap after the measure of mercy: [ag]break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the Lord, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.
13 But you have plowed wickedness: ye have reaped iniquity: you have eaten the fruit of lies: because thou didst trust in thine own ways, and in the multitude of thy strong men,
14 Therefore shall a tumult arise among thy people, and all thy munitions shall be destroyed, as [ah]Shalman destroyed Beth Arbel in the day of battle: the mother with the children was dashed in pieces.
15 So shall Bethel do unto you, because of your malicious wickedness: in a morning shall the king of Israel be destroyed.
11 1 The benefits of the Lord toward Israel. 5 Their ingratitude against him.
1 When Israel [ai]was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.
2 They called them, but they [aj]went thus from them: they sacrificed unto Baal, and burnt incense to images.
3 I led Ephraim also, as one should bear them in his arms: but they knew not that I healed them.
4 I led them with cords [ak]of a man, even with bands of love, and I was to them, as he was taketh off the yoke from their jaws, and I laid the meat unto them.
5 He shall no more return into the land of Egypt: but Assyria shall be his [al]King, because they refused to convert.
6 And the sword shall fall on his cities, and shall consume his bars, and devour them, because of their own counsels.
7 And my people are bent to rebellion against me: though [am]they called them to the most high, yet none at all would exalt him.
8 [an]How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I deliver thee, Israel? how shall I make thee, as [ao]Admah? how shall I set thee, as Zeboim? mine heart is turned within me: [ap]my repentings are rouled together.
9 I will not execute the fierceness of my wrath: I will not return to destroy Ephraim: for I am God, and not man, the holy one in the midst of thee, and I will not [aq]enter into the city.
10 They shall walk after the Lord: he shall roar like a lion: when he shall roar, then the children of the West shall fear.
11 [ar]They shall fear as a sparrow out of Egypt, and as a dove out of the land of Assyria, and I will place them in their houses, saith the Lord.
12 Ephraim compasseth me about with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit: but Judah yet ruleth with [as]God, and is faithful with the Saints.
3 1 The first Epistle sent to the Pastors of the Church of Sardis, 7 of Philadelphia, 14 And of the Laodiceans, 16 that they be not lukewarm, 20 but endeavor to further God’s glory.
1 [a]And write unto the Angel of the Church which is at [b]Sardis, These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars, [c]I know thy works: for thou hast a [d]name that thou livest, but thou art dead.
2 Be awake, and strengthen the things which remain, that are [e]ready to die: for I have not found thy work perfect before God.
3 Remember therefore, how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast and repent. (A)If therefore thou wilt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.
4 Notwithstanding thou hast a few names yet in Sardis, [f]which have not defiled their garments: and they shall walk with me in [g]white: for they are [h]worthy.
5 He [i]that overcometh, shall be clothed in white array, and I will not put out his Name out of the (B)book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his Angels.
6 Let him that hath an ear, hear what the Spirit saith unto the Churches.
7 ¶ [j]And write unto the Angel of the Church which is of Philadelphia, These things saith he that is Holy, and True, which hath the [k]key of David, which openeth and no man shutteth, and shutteth and no man openeth.
8 [l]I know thy works: behold I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my Name.
9 Behold, I will make them [m]of the Synagogue of Satan, which call themselves Jews, and are not, but do lie: behold, I say, I will make them that they shall come [n]and worship before thy feet, and shall know that I have loved thee.
10 Because thou hast [o]kept the word of my patience, therefore I will deliver thee from the hour of tentation, which will come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.
11 Behold, I come shortly: hold that which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.
12 [p]Him that overcometh, will I make a pillar in the Temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: [q]and I will write upon him the Name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is the new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God, and I will write upon him my new Name.
13 Let him that hath an ear, hear what the Spirit saith unto the Churches.
14 [r]And unto the Angel of the Church of the Laodiceans write, These things saith [s]Amen, the faithful and true witness, that [t]beginning of the creatures of God.
15 [u]I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou werest cold or hot.
16 Therefore because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, it will come to pass, that I shall spew thee out of my mouth.
17 For thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing, and knowest not how thou art wretched and miserable, [v]and poor, and blind, and naked.
18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried by the fire, that thou mayest be made rich: and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that thy filthy nakedness do not appear: and anoint thine eyes with eye salve, that thou mayest see.
19 As many as I love, (C)I rebuke and chasten: be [w]zealous therefore and amend.
20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock, [x]If any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in unto him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
21 [y]To him that overcometh, will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I overcame, and sit with my Father in his throne.
22 Let him that hath an ear, hear what the Spirit saith unto the Churches.
