Jeremiah 46-47

46 He prophesieth the destruction of Egypt. 27 Deliverance is promised to Israel.

The words of the Lord, which came to Jeremiah the Prophet against the [a]Gentiles,

As against Egypt, against the army of [b]Pharaoh Necho king of Egypt, which was by the river Perath in Carchemish, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babel smote in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah.

[c]Make ready buckler and shield, and go forth to battle.

Make ready the horses, and let the horsemen get up, and stand up with your sallets, furbish the spears, and put on the brigandines.

[d]Wherefore have I seen them afraid, and driven back? for their mighty men are smitten, and are fled away, and look not back: for fear was round about, saith the Lord.

The swift shall not flee away, nor the strong man escape: they shall stumble, and [e]fall toward the North by the river Perath.

Who is this that cometh up as [f]a flood, whose waters are moved like the rivers?

Egypt riseth up like the flood, and his waters are moved like the rivers, and he saith, I will go up, and will cover the earth: I will destroy the city with them that dwell therein.

Come up ye horses, and rage ye chariots, and let the valiant men come forth, [g]the black Moors, and the Libyans that bear the shield, and the Lydians that handle and bend the bow.

10 ¶ For this is the day of the Lord God of hosts, and a day of vengeance, that he may avenge him of his enemies: for the sword shall devour, and it shall be satiate, and made drunk with their blood: for the Lord God of hosts hath [h]a sacrifice in the North country [i]by the river Perath.

11 Go up unto Gilead, [j]and take balm, [k]O virgin, the daughter of Egypt: in vain shalt thou use many [l]medicines: for thou shalt have no health.

12 The nations have heard of thy shame, and thy cry hath filled the land: for the strong hath stumbled against the strong, and they are fallen both together.

13 ¶ The word that the Lord spake to Jeremiah the Prophet, how Nebuchadnezzar king of Babel should come and smite the land of Egypt.

14 Publish in Egypt and declare in Migdol, and proclaim in Noph, and in Tahpanhes, and say, Stand still and prepare thee, for the sword shall devour round about thee.

15 Why are thy valiant men put back? they could not stand, because the Lord did drive them.

16 He made many to fall, and one fell upon another: and they said, Arise, let us go again to our [m]own people, and to the land of our nativity from the sword of the violent.

17 They did cry there, Pharaoh king of Egypt, and of a great multitude, [n]hath passed the time appointed.

18 As I live, saith the King, whose Name is the Lord of hosts, surely as Tabor is in the mountains, and as Carmel is in the sea: so shall [o]it come.

19 O thou daughter dwelling in Egypt, make thee gear to go into captivity: for Noph shall be waste and desolate, without an inhabitant.

20 Egypt is like a [p]fair calf, but destruction cometh: out of the North it cometh.

21 Also her hired men [q]are in the midst of her like fat calves: they are also turned back and fled away together: they could not stand, because the day of their destruction was come upon them, and the time of their visitation.

22 The voice thereof shall go forth like a [r]serpent: for they shall march with an army, and come against [s]her with axes, as hewers of wood.

23 They shall cut down [t]her forest, saith the Lord: for they cannot be counted, because they are more than the [u]grasshoppers, and are innumerable.

24 The daughter of Egypt shall be confounded: she shall be delivered into the hands of the people of the North.

25 ¶ Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Behold, I will visit thy [v]common people of No and Pharaoh, and Egypt, with their gods and their kings, even Pharaoh, and all them that trust in him,

26 And I will deliver them into the hands of those that seek their lives, and into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babel, and into the hands of his servants, and afterward she shall dwell as [w]in the old time, saith the Lord.

27 [x]But fear not thou, O my servant Jacob, and be not thou afraid, O Israel: for behold, I will deliver thee from a far country, and thy seed from the land of their captivity, and Jacob shall return and be in rest, and prosperity, and none shall make him afraid.

28 Fear thou not, O Jacob my servant, saith the Lord, for I am with thee, and I will utterly destroy all the nations, whither I have driven thee: but I will not utterly destroy thee, but correct [y]thee by judgment, and not utterly cut thee off.

47 The word of the Lord against the Philistines.

The words of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the Prophet, against the Philistines, before that Pharaoh smote [z]Gaza.

Thus saith the Lord, Behold, waters rise up out of the [aa]North, and shall be as a swelling flood, and shall overflow the land, and all that is therein, and the cities with them that dwell therein: then the men shall cry, and all the inhabitants of the land shall howl,

At the noise and stamping of the hoofs of his strong horses, at the noise of his chariots, and at the rumbling of his wheels: [ab]the fathers shall not look back to their children, for feebleness of [ac]hands,

Because of the day that cometh to destroy all the Philistines, and to destroy Tyre, and Sidon, and all the rest that take their part: for the Lord will destroy the Philistines, the remnant of the isle of [ad]Caphtor.

[ae]Baldness is come upon Gaza: Ashkelon is cut up with the rest of their valleys. How long wilt [af]thou cut thyself?

O thou sword of the Lord, how long will it be or thou cease! turn again into thy scabbard, rest and be still.

How can it [ag]cease, seeing the Lord hath given it a charge against Ashkelon, and against the sea bank? even there hath he appointed it.

Hebrews 6

1 He briefly toucheth the childish slothfulness of the Hebrews, 4 and terrifieth them with severe threatenings: 7 He stirreth them up to endeavor in time to go forward: 9 He hopeth well of them: 13 He allegeth Abraham’s example: 17 and compareth faith that taketh hold on the word, 19 unto an anchor.

Therefore, leaving the doctrine of the [a]beginning of Christ, let us be led forward unto perfection, [b]not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,

Of the doctrine of baptisms, and laying on of hands, and of the resurrection from the dead, and of eternal judgment.

And this will we do if God permit.

(A)[c] For it is [d]impossible that they which were once lightened, and have [e]tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the holy Ghost,

And have tasted of the good word of God, and of the powers of the world to come,

If they fall away, should be renewed again by repentance: seeing they [f]crucify again to themselves the Son of God, and make a mock of him.

[g]For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing of God.

But that which beareth thorns and briars, is reproved, and is near unto cursing, whose end is to be burned.

[h]But beloved, we have persuaded ourselves better things of you, and such as accompany salvation, though we thus speak.

10 [i]For God is not unrighteous, that he should forget your work, and labor of love, which ye showed toward his Name, in that ye have ministered unto the Saints, and yet minister.

11 And we desire that every one of you show the same diligence, to the full assurance of hope unto the end,

12 [j]That ye be not slothful, but followers of them, which through faith and patience, inherit the promises.

13 [k]For when God made the promise to Abraham, because he had no greater to swear by, he swore by himself,

14 Saying, (B)Surely I will [l]abundantly bless thee, and multiply thee marvelously.

15 And so after that he had tarried patiently, he enjoyed the promise.

16 For men verily swear by him that is greater than themselves, and an oath for confirmation is among them an end of all strife.

17 So God, willing more [m]abundantly to show unto the heirs of promise the stableness of his counsel, bound himself by an oath,

18 That by two immutable things, wherein it is impossible that God should lie, we might have strong consolation, which have our refuge to lay hold upon that hope that is set before us,

19 [n]Which hope we have, as an anchor of the soul, but sure and steadfast, and it entereth into that which is within the veil.

20 [o]Whither the forerunner is for us entered in, even Jesus that is made an high Priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.
