Old/New Testament
47 “Come down and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter, Babel! Sit on the ground! There is no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans! For you shall no longer be called, ‘tender’ and ‘delicate’.
2 “Take the millstones and grind meal. Loosen your veil. Make your feet bare. Uncover your leg. Pass through the rivers.
3 “Your filthiness shall be uncovered, and your shame shall be seen. I will take vengeance, and I will not meet you as a man.”
4 Our Redeemer is the LORD of Hosts. His Name: The Holy One of Israel.
5 “Sit still and go into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans! For no more shall you be called, ‘The Lady of Kingdoms’.
6 “I was angry with My people: I have polluted My inheritance and given them into your hand. You showed them no mercy, but you laid your very heavy yoke upon the aged.
7 “And you said, ‘I shall be a lady forever’, so that you did not set your mind to these things, nor did you remember their end result.
8 “Hear now, therefore, you who are given to pleasures and dwells securely. She says in her heart, ‘I am and no one else. I shall not sit as a widow, nor shall I know the loss of children.’
9 “But these two things shall come to you suddenly on one day: the loss of children and widowhood. They shall come upon you in their perfection, for the multitude of your divinations, and for the great abundance of your enchanters.
10 “For you have trusted in your wickedness. You have said, ‘No one sees me.’ Your wisdom and your knowledge, they have caused you to rebel. And you have said in your heart, ‘I am, and no one else.’
11 “Therefore, misery shall come upon you. And you shall not know its morning. Destruction shall fall upon you, which you shall not be able to put away. Destruction shall come upon you suddenly, you not being aware.
12 “Stand, now, among your enchanters, and in the multitude of your soothsayers (with whom you have wearied yourself from your youth) if so be you may have profit, or if so be you may have strength.
13 “You are wearied in the multitude of your counsels. Now let the astrologers, the stargazers, and prognosticators stand up and save you from these things that shall come upon you.
14 “Behold, they shall be as stubble. The fire shall burn them. They shall not deliver their own lives from the power of the flame. There shall be no coals at which to warm or light by which to sit.
15 “Thus shall they with whom you have wearied yourself serve you, your merchants from your youth. Everyone shall wander to his own quarters. No one shall save you.”
48 “Hear this, O House of Jacob, which is called by the name of Israel and has come out of the waters of Judah, who swears by the Name of the LORD and makes mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth or in righteousness.
2 “For they are called ‘of the holy city’, and lean upon the God of Israel, whose Name is the LORD of Hosts.
3 “I declared the former things long ago. And they went out of My Mouth, and I showed them. I did them suddenly and they came to pass.
4 “Because I knew that you are obstinate, and your neck is an iron sinew, and your brow bronze.
5 “Therefore, I have declared it to you from the beginning. Before it came to pass, I showed it to you, lest you should say, ‘My idol has done them. And my carved image and my molten image has commanded them.’
6 “You have seen and heard all this, and will you not declare it? I have shown you new things, even now, and hidden things which you did not know.
7 “They are created now, and not from the beginning. And even before this, you did not hear them, lest you should say, ‘See, I knew them.’
8 “Yet, you did not hear them or know them, nor was your ear even opened long ago. For I knew that you would grievously transgress. Therefore I have called you a transgressor from the womb.
9 “For My Name’s sake, will I defer My wrath. And for My praise, I will restrain it from you, so that I do not cut you off.
10 “Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver. I have chosen you in the furnace of affliction.
11 “For My own sake, for My own sake I will do it. For how can My Name be polluted? Surely I will not give My Glory to another.
12 “Hear me, O Jacob and Israel, My called. I Am, I Am the First, and I Am the Last.
13 “Surely My Hand has laid the foundation of the Earth. And My right Hand has spanned the heavens. When I call them, they stand up together.
14 “All you, assemble yourselves and hear. Who among them has declared these things? The LORD has loved him. He will do His will in Babel, and His Arm shall be against the Chaldeans.
15 “I, even I, have spoken it. And I have called him. I have brought him. And his way shall prosper.
16 “Come near to Me. Hear this! I have not spoken it in secret from the beginning. From the time that the thing was, I was there, and now the Lord God and His Spirit have sent Me!”
17 Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the LORD your God, Who teaches you to profit, and leads you by the way that you should go.
18 “Oh, that you had listened to My Commandments! Then your peace would have been as a river, and your righteousness as the waves of the sea.
19 “Also, your seed would have been as the sand, and the fruit of your body like its gravel. His name would not have been cut off or destroyed before Me.
20 “Go out from Babel. Flee from the Chaldeans with a voice of joy! Tell and declare this. Show it forth to the end of the Earth. Say, ‘The LORD has redeemed His servant, Jacob!
21 ‘And they were not thirsty! He led them through the wilderness! He caused the waters to flow out of the rock for them! For He split the rock and the water gushed out!’
22 “There is no peace for the wicked,” says the LORD.
49 “Hear Me, O isles! And listen, you people from afar! The LORD has called Me from the womb and made mention of My Name from My mother’s belly.
2 “And He has made My Mouth like a sharp sword. Under the shadow of His Hand has He hidden Me and made Me a chosen Shaft, hidden Me in His quiver,
3 “and said to Me, ‘You are My Servant, Israel, for I will be glorious in You.’
4 “And I said, ‘I have labored in vain. I have spent My strength in vain and for nothing. But My judgment is with the LORD, and My work with My God.’
5 “‘And now,’ says the LORD (Who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant, so that I may bring Jacob back to him, though Israel is not gathered. I shall still be glorious in the eyes of the LORD. And My God shall be My strength),
6 “indeed He said, ‘It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the desolations of Israel. I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles, so that You may be My Salvation to the ends of the world.’”
7 Thus says the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel, His Holy One, to Him Who is despised in soul, to a nation that is abhorred, to a Servant of rulers: “Kings shall see and arise. And princes shall worship because of the LORD, Who is faithful, and the Holy One of Israel, Who has chosen You.”
8 Thus says the LORD: “In an acceptable time have I heard You. And on a Day of Salvation have I helped You. And I will preserve You, and will give You as a Covenant to the people, so that You may raise up the Earth and obtain the inheritance of the desolate heritages,
9 “so that You may say to the prisoners, ‘Go forth,’ and to those who are in darkness, ‘Show yourselves.’ They shall feed along the ways. And their pastures shall be on all the tops of the hills.
10 “They shall not be hungry, nor shall they be thirsty, nor shall the heat strike them, nor the Sun. For He Who has compassion on them, shall lead them. Even by the springs of water shall He drive them.
11 “And I will make all My mountains as a way. And My paths shall be exalted.
12 “Behold, these shall come from far away. And lo, these from the North and from the West, and these from the land of Sinim.”
13 Rejoice, O heavens! And be joyful, O Earth! Burst forth into praise, O mountains! For God has comforted His people and will have mercy upon His afflicted!
14 But Zion said, “The LORD has forsaken me. And my LORD has forgotten me.”
15 “Can a woman forget her child and not have compassion on the son of her womb? Even if they should forget, yet will I not forget you.
16 “Behold, I have carved you upon the palms of My Hands. Your walls are always in My sight.
17 “Your builders hurry. Your destroyers and those who made you a wasteland, have departed from you.
18 “Lift up your eyes all around and look. All these gather themselves together and come to you, as I live,’ says the LORD. “You shall surely put them all upon you as a garment and gird yourself with them like a bride.
19 “For your desolations and your wastelands, and your destroyed land, shall surely now be too cramped for those who shall dwell in it. And those who devour you shall be far away.
20 “The children of your barrenness shall say again in your ears, ‘The place is too cramped for me. Give me a place in which I may dwell.’
21 “Then shall you say in your heart, ‘Who has begotten me these, seeing I am barren and desolate, a captive and a wanderer to and fro? And who has nourished them? Behold, I was left alone. From where have these come?’”
22 Thus says the LORD God: “Behold, I will lift up My Hand to the Gentiles, and set up My standard to the people. And they shall bring your sons in their arms. And your daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders.
23 “And kings shall be your nursing fathers. And queens shall be your nurses. They shall bow down to you with their faces toward the earth, and lick up the dust of your feet. And you shall know that I am the LORD. For those who wait for Me shall not be ashamed.
24 “Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the just’s captivity delivered?”
25 But thus says the LORD: “Even the captivity of the mighty shall be taken away. And the prey of the tyrant shall be delivered. For I will contend with him who contends with you. And I will save your children,
26 “and will feed those who plunder you with their own flesh. And they shall be drunk with their own blood, as with sweet wine. And all flesh shall know that I, the LORD, am your Savior and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.”
4 Furthermore, we urge and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, brothers, that you increase more and more in how you ought to walk and to please God (as you have received from us).
2 For you know what Commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus.
3 For this is the will of God: your sanctification. And that you should abstain from fornication;
4 so that every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in holiness and honor,
5 not in the passion of lust (as the Gentiles do, who do not know God),
6 so that no one oppresses or defrauds his brother in any matter. For the Lord is Avenger of all such things, as we also have told you previously, and testified.
7 For God has not called us to uncleanness, but to holiness.
8 Therefore, the one who ignores these things, does not ignore man, but God (Who has also given His Holy Spirit).
9 But concerning brotherly love, you do not need me to write to you. For you are taught by God to love one another.
10 And, indeed, you do so to all the brothers throughout all Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers, to increase more and more
11 and to earnestly endeavor to be quiet and mind your own business; and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;
12 so that you may behave honorably toward those who are outside, and that you lack nothing.
13 Brothers, I would not have you be ignorant concerning those who are asleep, lest you mourn as others who have no hope.
14 For if we believe that Jesus is dead and is risen, so also will God bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.
15 For we say this to you by the Word of the Lord: that we who live - and remain until the coming of the Lord - shall not precede those who sleep.
16 For the Lord Himself shall descend from Heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ shall rise first.
17 Then shall we who live and remain be caught up with them also in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air. And so shall we ever be with the Lord.
18 Therefore, comfort one another with these words.
