Old/New Testament
34 1 He showeth that God punisheth the wicked for the love that he beareth toward his Church.
1 Come near, ye [a]nations and hear, and hearken, ye people: let the earth hear and all that is therein, the world and all that proceedeth thereof.
2 For the indignation of the Lord is upon all nations, and his wrath upon all their armies: he hath [b]destroyed them and delivered them to the slaughter.
3 And their slain shall be cast out, and their stink shall come up out of their bodies, and the mountains shall be melted with their blood.
4 And all the host of heaven [c]shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be folded like a book: and all their hosts shall fall as the leaf falleth from the vine, and as it falleth from the fig tree.
5 For my sword shall be [d]drunken in the heaven: behold, it shall come down upon Edom, even upon the people of [e]my curse to judgment.
6 The sword of the Lord is filled with blood: it is made fat with the fat and with the blood of the [f]lambs and the goats, with the fat of the kidneys of the rams: for the Lord hath a sacrifice in [g]Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
7 And the [h]unicorn shall come down with them, and the heifers with the bulls, and their land shall be drunken with blood, and their dust made fat with fatness.
8 For it is the day of the Lord’s vengeance, and the year of recompense for the judgment of Zion.
9 And the rivers thereof shall be turned into pitch, and the dust thereof into [i]brimstone, and the land thereof shall be burning pitch.
10 It shall not be quenched night nor day: the smoke thereof shall go up evermore: it shall be desolate from generation to generation; none shall pass through it forever.
11 But the pelican [j]and the hedgehog shall possess it, and the great owl, and the raven shall dwell in it, and he shall stretch out upon it the line of [k]vanity, and the stones of emptiness.
12 [l]The nobles thereof shall call to the kingdom, and there shall be none, and all the princes thereof shall be as nothing.
13 And it shall bring forth thorns in the palaces thereof, nettles, and thistles in the strongholds thereof, and it shall be an habitation for dragons, and a court for ostriches.
14 There shall [m]meet also Ziim and Iim, and the Satyr shall cry to his fellow, and the screech owl shall rest there, and shall find for herself a quiet dwelling.
15 There [n]shall the owl make her nest, and lay and hatch, and gather them under her shadow: there shall the vultures also be gathered, every one with her make.
16 Seek in the [o]book of the Lord, and read: none of [p]these shall fail, none shall want her make: for [q]his mouth hath commanded, and his very spirit hath gathered them.
17 And he hath cast the [r]lot for them, and his hand hath divided unto them by line: they shall possess it forever: from generation to generation shall they dwell in it.
35 1 The great joy of them that believe in Christ. 3 Their office which preach the Gospel. 8 The fruits that follow thereof.
1 The [s]desert and the wilderness shall rejoice, and the waste ground shall be glad and flourish as the rose.
2 It shall flourish abundantly, and shall greatly rejoice also and joy: the glory of Lebanon shall be given unto it: the beauty of [t]Carmel, and of Sharon, they shall [u]see the glory of the Lord, and the excellency of our God.
3 [v]Strengthen the weak hands, and comfort the feeble knees.
4 Say unto them that are fearful, Be you strong, fear not: behold, your God cometh with [w]vengeance: even God with a recompense, he will come and save you.
5 Then shall the eyes of the [x]blind be lightened, and the ears of the deaf be opened.
6 Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the dumb man’s tongue shall sing: for in the [y]wilderness shall waters break out, and rivers in the desert.
7 And the dry ground shall be as a pool, and the thirsty as springs of water: in the habitation of dragons, where they lay, shall be a place for reeds and rushes.
8 And there shall be a path and a way, and the way shall be called [z]holy: the polluted shall not pass by it: for [aa]he shall be with them, and walk in the way, and the fools shall not err.
9 There shall be [ab]no lion, nor noisome beasts shall ascend by it, neither shall they be found there, that the redeemed may walk.
10 Therefore the [ac]redeemed of the Lord shall return and come to Zion with praise: and everlasting joy shall be upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and mourning shall flee away.
36 1 Sennacherib sendeth Rabshakeh to besiege Jerusalem. 15 His blasphemies against God.
1 Now [ad]in the [ae]fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib King of Assyria came up against all the strong cities of Judah, and took them.
2 And the King of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish toward Jerusalem unto king Hezekiah, with a great host, and he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the path of the fuller’s field.
3 Then came forth unto him Eliakim the son of Hilkiah the [af]steward of the house, and Shebna [ag]the chancellor, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder.
4 And [ah]Rabshakeh said unto them, Tell you Hezekiah, I pray you, Thus saith the great king, the King of Assyria, What confidence is this, wherein thou trustest?
5 I say, [ai]Surely I have eloquence, but counsel and strength are for the war: on whom then dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?
6 Lo, thou trustest in this broken staff of reed, on Egypt, whereupon if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is [aj]Pharaoh King of Egypt unto all that trust in him.
7 But if thou say unto me, We trust in the Lord our God, is not that he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah took down, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar?
8 Now therefore give hostages to my Lord the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.
9 For how canst thou [ak]despise any captain of the [al]least of my lord’s servants? and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?
10 And am I now come up without the Lord to this land to destroy it? The Lord said unto me, [am]Go up against this land and destroy it.
11 ¶ Then said Eliakim, and Shebna and Joah unto Rabshakeh, [an]Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the Aramite’s language (for we understand it) and talk not with us in the Jews’ tongue, in the audience of the people that are on the wall.
12 Then said Rabshakeh, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words, and not to the men that sit on the wall? that they may eat their own thing, and drink their own [ao]piss with you?
13 So Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and said, Hear the words of the great King, of the King of Assyria.
14 Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you.
15 Neither let Hezekiah make you to trust in the Lord, saying, The Lord will surely deliver us: this city shall not be given over into the hand of the king of Assyria.
16 Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make [ap]appointment with me, and come out to me, that every man may eat of his own vine, and every man of his own fig tree, and drink every man the water of his own well,
17 Till I come and bring you to a land like your own land, even a land of wheat and wine, a land of bread and vineyards,
18 Lest Hezekiah deceive you, saying, The Lord will deliver us. Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?
19 Where is the god of [aq]Hamath, and of Arpad? where is the god of Sepharvaim? or how have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?
20 Who is he among all the gods of these lands, that hath delivered their country out of mine hand, that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem out of mine hand?
21 Then they [ar]kept silence, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not.
22 Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah the steward of the house, and Shebna the chancellor, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder, unto Hezekiah with rent clothes, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
2 4 He condemneth, as vain, whatsoever is without Christ, 11 entreating specially of circumcision, 16 of abstinence from meats, 18 and of worshipping of Angels. 20 That we are delivered from the traditions of the Law through Christ.
1 For I [a]would ye knew what great fighting I have for your sakes, and for them of Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my [b]person in the flesh.
2 [c]That [d]their hearts might be comforted, and they knit together in love, and in all riches of the [e]full assurance of understanding, to know the mystery of God, even the Father, and of Christ:
3 In whom are hid all the treasures of [f]wisdom and knowledge.
4 [g]And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with [h]enticing words:
5 (A)For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, rejoicing and beholding your [i]order, and your [j]steadfast faith in Christ.
6 As ye have therefore [k]received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him.
7 Rooted and built in him, and established in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving:
8 [l]Beware lest there be any man that [m]spoil you through philosophy, and vain deceit, [n]through the traditions of men, [o]according to the [p]rudiments of the world, [q]and not after Christ.
9 [r]For [s]in him [t]dwelleth [u]all the fullness of the Godhead [v]bodily.
10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power.
11 [w]In whom also ye are circumcised with (B)circumcision made without hands, by putting off the [x]sinful body of the flesh, through the circumcision of Christ,
12 [y]In that ye are (C)[z]buried with [aa]him through baptism, [ab]in whom ye are also raised up together through the faith of the operation of [ac]God, which raised him from the dead.
13 (D)[ad]And you which were dead in sins, [ae]and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, forgiving you all your trespasses,
14 [af]And putting out the (E)[ag]handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, he even took it out of the way, and fastened it upon the cross,
15 And hath spoiled the [ah]Principalities, and Powers, and hath [ai]made a show of them openly, and hath triumphed over them in the [aj]same cross.
16 [ak]Let no man therefore condemn you in meat and drink, or in respect of an holy day, or of the new moon, or of the Sabbath days,
17 Which are but a shadow of things to come: but the [al]body is in Christ.
18 [am]Let no man at his pleasure bear rule over you by [an]humbleness of mind, and worshipping of Angels, [ao]advancing himself in those things which he never saw, [ap][aq]rashly puffed up with his fleshly mind,
19 [ar]And holdeth not the [as]head, whereof all the body furnished and knit together by joints and bands, increaseth with the increasing of [at]God.
20 [au]Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the ordinances of the world, why, [av]as though ye lived in the world, are ye burdened with traditions?
21 [aw]As, Touch not, Taste not, Handle not.
22 [ax]Which all perish with the using, [ay]and are after the commandments and doctrines of men.
23 [az]Which things have indeed a show of [ba]wisdom, in [bb]voluntary religion and humbleness of mind, and in [bc]not sparing the body, which are things of no value, since they pertain to the [bd]filling of the flesh.
