14 The Lord will certainly have compassion on Jacob;[a] he will again choose Israel as his special people[b] and restore[c] them to their land. Resident foreigners will join them and unite with the family[d] of Jacob. 2 Nations will take them and bring them back to their own place. Then the family of Israel will make foreigners their servants as they settle in the Lord’s land.[e] They will make their captors captives and rule over the ones who oppressed them. 3 When the Lord gives you relief from your suffering and anxiety[f] and from the hard labor that you were made to perform, 4 you will taunt the king of Babylon with these words:[g]
“Look how the oppressor has met his end!
Hostility[h] has ceased!
5 The Lord has broken the club of the wicked,
the scepter of rulers.
6 It[i] furiously struck down nations
with unceasing blows.[j]
It angrily ruled over nations,
oppressing them without restraint.[k]
7 The whole earth rests and is quiet;
they break into song.
8 The evergreens also rejoice over your demise,[l]
as do the cedars of Lebanon, singing,[m]
‘Since you fell asleep,[n]
no woodsman comes up to chop us down!’[o]
9 Sheol[p] below is stirred up about you,
ready to meet you when you arrive.
It rouses[q] the spirits of the dead for you,
all the former leaders of the earth;[r]
it makes all the former kings of the nations
rise from their thrones.[s]
10 All of them respond to you, saying:
‘You too have become weak like us!
You have become just like us!
11 Your splendor[t] has been brought down to Sheol,
as well as the sound of your stringed instruments.[u]
You lie on a bed of maggots,
with a blanket of worms over you.[v]
12 Look how you have fallen from the sky,
O shining one, son of the dawn![w]
You have been cut down to the ground,
O conqueror[x] of the nations![y]
13 You said to yourself,[z]
‘I will climb up to the sky.
Above the stars of El[aa]
I will set up my throne.
I will rule on the mountain of assembly
on the remote slopes of Zaphon.[ab]
14 I will climb up to the tops[ac] of the clouds;
I will make myself like the Most High!’[ad]
15 But you were brought down[ae] to Sheol,
to the remote slopes of the Pit.[af]
16 Those who see you stare at you,
they look at you carefully, thinking:[ag]
‘Is this the man who shook the earth,
the one who made kingdoms tremble?
17 Is this the one who made the world like a wilderness,
who ruined its[ah] cities,
and refused to free his prisoners so they could return home?’[ai]
18 [aj] As for all the kings of the nations,
all of them[ak] lie down in splendor,[al]
each in his own tomb.[am]
19 But you have been thrown out of your grave
like a shoot that is thrown away.[an]
You lie among[ao] the slain,
among those who have been slashed by the sword,
among those headed for[ap] the stones of the Pit,[aq]
as if you were a mangled corpse.[ar]
20 You will not be buried with them,[as]
because you destroyed your land
and killed your people.
The offspring of the wicked
will never be mentioned again.
21 Prepare to execute[at] his sons
for the sins their ancestors have committed.[au]
They must not rise up and take possession of the earth,
or fill the surface of the world with cities.[av]
22 “I will rise up against them,”
says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.
“I will blot out all remembrance of Babylon and destroy all her people,[aw]
including the offspring she produces,”[ax]
says the Lord.
23 “I will turn her into a place that is overrun with wild animals[ay]
and covered with pools of stagnant water.
I will get rid of her, just as one sweeps away dirt with a broom,”[az]
says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.
24 [ba] The Lord of Heaven’s Armies makes this solemn vow:
“Be sure of this:
Just as I have intended, so it will be;
just as I have planned, it will happen.
25 I will break Assyria[bb] in my land,
I will trample them[bc] underfoot on my hills.
Their yoke will be removed from my people,
the burden will be lifted from their shoulders.[bd]
26 This is the plan I have devised for the whole earth;
my hand is ready to strike all the nations.”[be]
27 Indeed,[bf] the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has a plan,
and who can possibly frustrate it?
His hand is ready to strike,
and who can possibly stop it?[bg]
The Lord Will Judge the Philistines
28 This oracle[bh] came in the year that King Ahaz died:[bi]
29 Don’t be so happy, all you Philistines,
just because the club that beat you has been broken![bj]
For a viper will grow out of the serpent’s root,
and its fruit will be a darting adder.[bk]
30 The poor will graze in my pastures;[bl]
the needy will rest securely.
But I will kill your root by famine;
it will put to death all your survivors.[bm]
31 Wail, O city gate!
Cry out, O city!
Melt with fear,[bn] all you Philistines!
For out of the north comes a cloud of smoke,
and there are no stragglers in its ranks.[bo]
32 How will they respond to the messengers of this nation?[bp]
Indeed, the Lord has made Zion secure;
the oppressed among his people will find safety in her.
The Lord Will Judge Moab
15 This is an oracle[bq] about Moab:
Indeed, in a night it is devastated,
Ar of Moab is destroyed!
Indeed, in a night it is devastated,
Kir of Moab is destroyed!
2 They went up to the temple;[br]
the people of Dibon went up to the high places to lament.[bs]
Because of what happened to Nebo and Medeba,[bt] Moab wails.
Every head is shaved bare,
every beard is trimmed off.[bu]
3 In their streets they wear sackcloth;
on their roofs and in their town squares
all of them wail;
they fall down weeping.
4 The people of[bv] Heshbon and Elealeh cry out;
their voices are heard as far away as Jahaz.
For this reason Moab’s soldiers shout in distress;
their courage wavers.[bw]
5 My heart cries out because of Moab’s plight,[bx]
and for the fugitives[by] stretched out[bz] as far as Zoar and Eglath Shelishiyah.
For they weep as they make their way up the ascent of Luhith;
they loudly lament their demise on the road to Horonaim.[ca]
6 For the waters of Nimrim are gone;[cb]
the grass is dried up,
the vegetation has disappeared,
and there are no plants.
7 For this reason what they have made and stored up,
they carry over the Stream of the Poplars.
8 Indeed, the cries of distress echo throughout Moabite territory;
their wailing can be heard in Eglaim and Beer Elim.[cc]
9 Indeed, the waters of Dimon[cd] are full of blood!
Indeed, I will heap even more trouble on Dimon.[ce]
A lion will attack[cf] the Moabite fugitives
and the people left in the land.
16 Send rams as tribute to the ruler of the land,[cg]
from Sela in the wilderness[ch]
to the hill of Daughter Zion.
2 At the fords of the Arnon[ci]
the Moabite women are like a bird
that flies about when forced from its nest.[cj]
3 “Bring a plan, make a decision.[ck]
Provide some shade in the middle of the day.[cl]
Hide the fugitives! Do not betray[cm] the one who tries to escape.
4 Please let the Moabite fugitives live[cn] among you.
Hide them[co] from the destroyer!”
Certainly[cp] the one who applies pressure will cease;[cq]
the destroyer will come to an end;
those who trample will disappear[cr] from the earth.
5 Then a trustworthy king will be established;
he will rule in a reliable manner,
this one from David’s family.[cs]
He will be sure to make just decisions
and will be experienced in executing justice.[ct]
6 We have heard about Moab’s pride—
their great arrogance—
their boasting, pride, and excess.[cu]
But their boastful claims are empty.[cv]
7 So Moab wails over its demise[cw]—
they all wail!
Completely devastated, they moan
about what has happened to the raisin cakes of Kir Hareseth.[cx]
8 For the fields of Heshbon are dried up,
as well as the vines of Sibmah.
The rulers of the nations trample all over its vines,
which reach Jazer and spread to the wilderness;
their shoots spread out and cross the sea.
9 So I weep along with Jazer[cy]
over the vines of Sibmah.
I will saturate you[cz] with my tears, Heshbon and Elealeh,
for the conquering invaders shout triumphantly
over your fruit and crops.[da]
10 Joy and happiness disappear from the orchards,
and in the vineyards no one rejoices or shouts;
no one treads out juice in the wine vats[db]—
I have brought the joyful shouts to an end.[dc]
11 So my heart constantly sighs for Moab, like the strumming of a harp,[dd]
my inner being sighs[de] for Kir Hareseth.[df]
12 When the Moabites plead with all their might at their high places,[dg]
and enter their temples to pray, their prayers will be ineffective.[dh]
13 This is the message the Lord previously announced about Moab. 14 Now the Lord makes this announcement: “Within exactly three years[di] Moab’s splendor will disappear, along with all her many people; there will be only a few insignificant survivors left.”[dj]
Live in Love
5 Therefore, be[a] imitators of God as dearly loved children 2 and live[b] in love, just as Christ also loved us[c] and gave himself for us, a sacrificial and fragrant offering[d] to God. 3 But[e] among you there must not be either sexual immorality, impurity of any kind,[f] or greed, as these are not fitting for the saints.[g] 4 Neither should there be vulgar speech, foolish talk, or coarse jesting—all of which are out of character—but rather thanksgiving. 5 For you can be confident of this one thing:[h] that no person who is immoral, impure, or greedy (such a person is an idolater) has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.
Live in the Light
6 Let nobody deceive you with empty words, for because of these things God’s wrath comes on the sons of disobedience.[i] 7 Therefore do not be sharers with them,[j] 8 for you were at one time darkness, but now you are[k] light in the Lord. Live[l] like children of light— 9 for the fruit of the light[m] consists in[n] all goodness, righteousness, and truth— 10 trying to learn[o] what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but rather[p] expose them.[q] 12 For the things they do[r] in secret are shameful even to mention. 13 But all things being exposed by the light are made visible. 14 For everything made visible is light, and for this reason it says:[s]
Live Wisely
15 Therefore consider carefully how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 taking advantage of every opportunity, because the days are evil.
