Genesis 4-6

1 The generation of mankind. 3 Cain and Abel offer sacrifice. 8 Cain killeth Abel. 23 Lamech a tyrant encourageth his fearful wives. 26 True religion is restored.

Afterward the man knew Eve his wife which [a]conceived and bare Cain, and said, I have obtained a man [b]by the Lord.

And again she brought forth his brother Abel, and Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain was a tiller of the ground.

¶ And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought an [c]oblation unto the Lord of the fruit of the ground.

And Abel also himself brought of the firstfruits of his sheep, and of the fat of them, and the Lord had respect unto (A)Abel, and to his offering,

But unto Cain and to his offering he had no [d]regard: wherefore Cain was exceedingly wroth and his countenance fell down.

Then the Lord said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance cast down?

If thou do well, shalt thou not be [e]accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the [f]door: also unto thee his [g]desire shall be subject, and thou shalt rule over him.

¶ Then Cain spake unto Abel his brother. And (B)when they were in the field, Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

Then the Lord said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? Who answered, I cannot tell. [h]Am I my brother’s keeper?

10 Again he said, What hast thou done? the [i]voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me, from the earth.

11 Now therefore thou art cursed [j]from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thine hand.

12 When thou shalt till the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength: a [k]vagabond and a runagate shalt thou be in the earth.

13 Then Cain said to the Lord, [l][m]My punishment is greater than I can bear.

14 Behold, thou hast cast me out this day from [n]the earth, and from thy face shall I be hid, and shall be a vagabond, and a runagate in the earth, and whosoever findeth me shall slay me.

15 Then the Lord said unto him, Doubtless whosoever slayeth Cain, he shall be [o]punished seven fold. And the Lord set a [p]mark upon Cain, lest any man finding him, should kill him.

16 Then Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land of Nod toward the East side of Eden.

17 Cain also knew his wife, which conceived and bore Enoch: and he built a [q]city, and called the name of the city by the name of his son, Enoch.

18 And to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad begat Mehujael, and Mehujael begat Methushael, and Methushael begat Lamech.

19 ¶ And Lamech took to him [r]two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.

20 And Adah bare Jabal, who was the [s]father of such as dwell in the tents, and of such as have cattle.

21 And his brother’s name was Jubal, who was the father of all that play on the harp and [t]organs.

22 And Zillah also bore Tubal-Cain, who wrought cunningly every craft of brass and of iron: and the sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah.

23 Then Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice, ye wives of Lamech; hearken unto my speech: [u]for I would slay a man in my wound, and a young man to mine hurt.

24 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech [v]seventy times sevenfold.

25 ¶ And Adam knew his wife again, and she bare a son, and she called his name Seth: for God, said she, hath appointed me another seed for Abel, because Cain slew him.

26 And to the same Seth also there was born a son, and he called his name Enosh. Then began men to [w]call upon the name of the Lord.

The genealogy. 5 The age and death of Adam. 6 His succeession unto Noah and his children. 24 Enoch was taken away.

This is the [x]book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created Adam, in the [y]likeness of God made he him,

Male and female created he them, and blessed them, and called their name [z]Adam in the day that they were created.

¶ Now Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a child in his own [aa]likeness after his image, and called his name Seth.

(C)And the days of Adam, after he had begotten Seth, were eight hundred years, and he begat sons and daughters.

So all the days that Adam lived, were nine hundred and thirty years, and he died.

And [ab]Seth lived an hundred and five years, and begat Enosh.

And Seth lived after he begat Enosh, eight hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters.

So all the days of Seth were [ac]nine hundred and twelve years: and he died.

¶ Also Enosh lived ninety years, and begat Cainan.

10 And Enosh lived after he begat Cainan, eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters.

11 So all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years: and he died.

12 ¶ Likewise Cainan lived seventy years, and begat Mahalalel.

13 And Cainan lived, after he begat Mahalalel, eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters.

14 So all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years: and he died.

15 ¶ Mahalalel also lived sixty and five years, and begat Jared.

16 Also Mahalalel lived, after he begat Jared, eight hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters.

17 So all the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred ninety and five years: and he died.

18 ¶ And Jared lived an hundred sixty and two years, and begat Enoch.

19 Then Jared lived, after he begat Enoch, eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.

20 So all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died.

21 (D)Also Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah.

22 And Enoch [ad]walked with God, after he begat Methuselah, three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.

23 So all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years.

24 And Enoch walked with God, and he was no more seen: for [ae]God took him away.

25 Methuselah also lived an hundred eighty and seven years, and begat Lamech.

26 And Methuselah lived, after he begat Lamech, seven hundred eighty and two years, and begat sons and daughters.

27 So all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years, and he died.

28 ¶ Then Lamech lived an hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son,

29 And called his name, Noah, saying, This same shall [af]comfort us concerning our work and sorrow of our hands, as touching the earth, which the Lord hath cursed.

30 And Lamech lived, after he begat Noah, five hundred ninety and five years, and begat sons and daughters.

31 So all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy and seven years: and he died.

32 And Noah was five hundred years old. And Noah begat Shem, Ham and Japheth.

3 God threateneth to bring the flood. 5 Man altogether corrupt. 6 God repenteth that he made him. 18 Noah and his are preserved in the Ark, which he was commanded to make.

So when men began to be multiplied upon the earth, and there were daughters born unto them,

Then the [ag]sons of God saw the daughters [ah]of men that they were [ai]fair, and they took them wives of all that they [aj]liked.

Therefore the Lord said, My spirit shall not always [ak]strive with man, because he is but flesh, and his days shall be an [al]hundred and twenty years.

There were [am]giants in the earth in those days: yea, and after that the sons of God came unto the daughters of men, and they had borne them children, these were mighty men, which in old time were men of [an]renown.

¶ When the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and all the imaginations of the thoughts of his (E)heart were only evil [ao]continually,

Then it [ap]repented the Lord, that he had made man in the earth, and he was sorry in his heart.

Therefore the Lord said, I will destroy from the earth the man, whom I have created, from man [aq]to beast, to the creeping thing, and to the fowl of the heaven: for I repent that I have made them.

But Noah [ar]found grace in the eyes of the Lord.

¶ These are the [as]generations of Noah: Noah was a just and upright man in his time: and Noah walked with God.

10 And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth.

11 The earth also was corrupt before God: for the earth was filled with [at]cruelty.

12 Then God looked upon the earth, and behold, it was corrupt: for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.

13 And God said unto Noah, [au]An end of all flesh is come before me: for the earth is filled with [av]cruelty [aw]through them: and behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

14 ¶ Make thee an Ark of [ax]pine trees: thou shalt make [ay]cabins in the Ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.

15 And [az]thus shalt thou make it: the length of the Ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits.

16 A window shalt thou make in the Ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above, and the door of the Ark shalt thou set in the side thereof: thou shalt make it with the [ba]low, second, and third room.

17 And I, behold, I will bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life under heaven: all that is in the earth shall perish.

18 But with thee will I [bb]establish my covenant, and thou shalt go into the Ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons’ wives with thee.

19 And of every living thing of all flesh two of every sort shalt thou cause to come into the Ark, to keep them alive with thee: they shall be male and female.

20 Of the fowls, after their kind, and of the cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, that thou mayest keep them alive.

21 And take thou with thee of all meat that is eaten: and thou shalt gather it to thee, that it may be meat for thee and for them.

22 (F)Noah therefore did according unto all that God commanded him: even [bc]so did he.

Matthew 2

The wise men, who are the firstfruits of the Gentiles, worship Christ. 14 Joseph fled into Egypt with Jesus and his mother. 16 Herod slayeth the children.

When (A)[a]Jesus then was born at Bethlehem in [b]Judea, in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came [c]Wise men from the East to Jerusalem,

Saying, Where is the King of the Jews that is born? for we have seen his star in the East, and are come to worship him.

When king Herod heard this, he was [d]troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

And gathering together all the [e]chief Priests and [f]Scribes of the people, he asked of them, where Christ should be born.

And they said unto him, At Bethlehem in Judea: for so it is written by the Prophet,

(B)And thou Bethlehem in the land of Judah, art not the [g]least among the Princes of Judah: for out of thee shall come the governor that [h]shall feed my people Israel.

Then Herod privily called the Wise men, and diligently inquired of them the time of the star that appeared,

And sent them to Bethlehem, saying, Go, and search diligently for the babe: and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come also, and worship him.

¶ So when they had heard the king, they departed: and lo, the star which they had seen in the East, went before them, till it came and stood over the place where the babe was.

10 And when they saw the star, they rejoiced with an exceeding great joy,

11 And went into the house, and found the babe with Mary his mother, and [i]fell down, and worshipped him, and opened their [j]treasures, and presented unto him gifts, even gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

12 And after they were [k]warned of God in a dream, that they should not go again to Herod, they returned into their country another way.

13 [l]After their departure, behold, the Angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the babe and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be there till I bring thee word, for Herod will seek the babe to destroy him.

14 So he arose and took the babe and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt.

15 And was there unto the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled, which is spoken of the Lord by the (C)Prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.

16 ¶ Then Herod, seeing that he was mocked of the Wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the male children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently searched out of the Wise men.

17 Then was that fulfilled which is spoken [m]by the Prophet Jeremiah, saying,

18 (D)In Ramah was [n]a voice heard, mourning, and weeping, and great howling: [o]Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they were not.

19 [p]And when Herod was dead, behold, an Angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

20 Saying, Arise, and take the babe and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the babe’s life.

21 Then he arose up, and took the babe and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.

22 But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judea instead of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: yet after he was warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee.

23 And went and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Prophets, which was, That he should be called a Nazarite.
