Isaiah 65-66

God’s Response

65 “I let myself be sought by those who didn’t ask for me;[a]
    I let myself be found by those who didn’t seek me.
I said, ‘Here I am! Here I am!’
    to a nation that didn’t call on my name.
I held out my hands all day long
    to a disobedient[b] people,
who walk in a way that isn’t good,
    following their own inclinations—
a people who continually provoke me to my face;
    they[c] keep sacrificing in gardens
        and waving their hands[d] over stone[e] altars;
who sit among graves,
    and spend the night in secret places;
who eat pigs’ meat,
    with the broth[f] of detestable things in[g] their pots;
who say, ‘Keep to yourself!’
    ‘Don’t touch[h] me!’ and ‘I am[i] too holy for you!’

“Such people are smoke in my nostrils,
    a fire that keeps burning all day long.
Watch out! It stands written before me:
    ‘I won’t keep silent, but I will pay back in full;
        I’ll indeed repay into[j] their laps
both your iniquities and your ancestors’[k] iniquities together,’’
    says the Lord.
“Because they offered incense on the mountains
    and insulted me on hills,[l]
I’ll measure into[m] their laps
    full payment for their earlier actions.”

A Remnant will be Preserved

This is what the Lord says:
    “Just as new wine is found in the cluster,
and people have said,[n] ‘Don’t destroy it,
    for there is a gift in it,’
so I’ll act for my servants’ sake,
    by not destroying them all.
I’ll bring forth descendants from Jacob,
    and from Judah they[o] will inherit[p] my mountains;
my chosen people will inherit it,
    and my servants will live there.
10 Sharon will become a pasture for flocks,
    and the Valley of Achor a fold for herds,[q]
        for my people who have sought me.
11 But as for you who forsake the Lord,
    who forget my holy mountain,
who spread a table for Fortune[r]
    and[s] fill drink offerings[t] for Destiny,[u]
12 I’ll consign[v] you to the sword,
    and all of you will bend down for the slaughter—
because when I called, you didn’t answer,
    when I spoke, you didn’t listen;
but you did what was evil in my sight,
    and chose what I took no pleasure in.”

The Righteous and Wicked Contrasted

13 Therefore, this is what the Lord[w] says:
“See, my servants will eat,
    but you’ll go hungry;
my servants will drink,
    but you’ll go thirsty;
my servants will rejoice,
    but you’ll be put to shame.
14 My servants will sing in gladness[x] of heart,
    but you’ll cry for help[y] from anguish of heart,
        and you’ll howl from brokenness of spirit.
15 You’ll leave your name to my chosen ones as a curse,
    and the Lord God will put you to death permanently.[z]
16 Then whoever takes an oath[aa] by the God of faithfulness,
    and whoever takes an oath in the land,
        will swear by the God of faithfulness,
because the former troubles are forgotten
    and are hidden from my eyes.

A New Universe

17 Take notice! I’m about to create new heavens
    and a new earth;
the former things won’t be remembered,
    nor will they come to mind.
18 But be glad[ab] and rejoice[ac] forever
    in what I am creating,
for I am about to create Jerusalem as a joy,
    and its people as a delight.
19 I’ll rejoice over Jerusalem,
    and take delight in my people;
no longer will the sound of weeping be heard in it,
    nor the cry of distress.

20 “And[ad] there will no longer be in it
    a young boy[ae] who lives only a few days,
        or an old person who does not live out his days;
for one who dies at a hundred years will be thought a mere youth,
    and one who falls short of a hundred years will be considered accursed.
21 People[af] will build houses and live in them;
    They’ll plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
22 They won’t build for others to inhabit;
    they won’t plant for others to eat—
for like the lifetime[ag] of a tree,[ah] so will the lifetime[ai] of my people be,
    and my chosen ones will long enjoy[aj] the work of their hands.
23 They won’t toil in vain
    nor bear children doomed to misfortune,
for they will be offspring blessed[ak] by the Lord,
    they and their descendants with them.
24 Before they call, I will answer,
    while they are still speaking, I’ll hear.

25 “The wolf and the lamb will feed together,
    and the lion will eat straw like the ox;
but as for the serpent—
    its food will be dust!
They won’t harm or destroy
    on my entire holy mountain,”

says the Lord.

The Worship that God Commands

66 This is what the Lord says:

“Heaven is my throne,
    and the earth is my footstool.
Where is the house[al] that you would build for me,
    and where will my resting place be?
All these things my hand has made,
    and so all these things came into being,”
        declares the Lord.
“But this is the one to whom I will look favorably:
    to the one who is humble and contrite in spirit,
        and who[am] trembles at[an] my message.

“Whoever slaughters an ox
    is just like[ao] one who kills a human being;
whoever sacrifices a lamb
    is just like one who breaks a dog’s neck;
whoever makes a grain offering
    is just like one who offers pig’s blood;
and whoever makes a memorial offering of frankincense
    is just like one who blesses an idol.
Yes, these have chosen their own ways,
    and they take delight in their contaminated actions.
Therefore[ap] I, too, will choose harsh treatment for them,
    and will bring upon them what they dread.
For when I called, no[aq] one answered;
    when I spoke, they didn’t listen;
but they did what I consider to be evil,
    and chose what doesn’t please me.”

The Lord Vindicates Zion

“Hear this message from the Lord,
    you who tremble at his words:[ar]

“Your own brothers who hate you
    and exclude you because of my name
have said: ‘Let the Lord be glorified;
    he will see[as] your joy,’
        yet it is they who will be put to shame.

“Listen to that uproar in[at] the city!
    Listen to that noise from the Temple!
It is the sound of the Lord
    paying back retribution to his enemies!

“Before she goes into labor she gives birth;
    before her pains come upon her
        she has delivered[au] a son.
Who has ever heard of such a thing?
    And[av] who ever sees[aw] such things?
Can a country be born in a single day,
    or can a nation be brought forth in a single moment?
Yet no sooner was Zion in labor
    than she delivered her children.
Am I to open the womb and not deliver?”
    asks[ax] the Lord.
“And when I bring to delivery, am I to close[ay] the womb?”
    asks your God.

10 “Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be happy for her,
    all you who love her;
rejoice with her in gladness,
    all you who mourn over her,
11 so that you may nurse and be satisfied
    at her consoling breasts,
and so that you may drink deeply and take delight
    from her glorious bosom.”

The Rule of God

12 This[az] is what the Lord says:

“See, I will extend prosperity to her like a river,
    and the wealth of nations like a flooding stream;
and you will nurse,
    and you[ba] will be carried on her hip,[bb]
        and bounced upon her knees.
13 Like a child whom his mother comforts,
    so I will comfort you;
        and you will be comforted in Jerusalem.
14 And when you look, your hearts will rejoice
    and your bodies will flourish like grass;
and it will be made known
    that the Lord’s hand is with his servants,
        but his fury is with his enemies.

15 “Take notice! The Lord will come with fire,
    and his chariot[bc] will be[bd] like a whirlwind,
to pay back his anger—yes, his anger!—[be] in fury,
    and his menacing rebukes[bf] in flames of fire.
16 For with fire and with his sword the Lord will proceed to judgment[bg] on all humanity,[bh]
    and those slain by the Lord will be many.”

17 “Those who consecrate and purify themselves to enter the groves,[bi] following the one at the center of those who eat the meat of pigs, disgusting things,[bj] and rats, are all alike,”[bk] says[bl] the Lord. 18 “But as for me, I know their actions and their thoughts. Come[bm] and gather all nations and languages, and they will come and see my glory.

19 “I will put up signs[bn] among them, and from them I will send survivors to the nations—to Tarshish, Libya,[bo] and Lydia,[bp] (who draw the bow),[bq] to Tubal and Greece,[br] to the far off coastlands that have not heard of my fame or seen my glory. Then they will proclaim my glory among the nations. 20 They will bring all—yes, all!—[bs] of your kindred from all the nations to[bt] my holy mountain Jerusalem as an offering to the Lord—on horses, in chariots, in wagons, and on mules—yes, even on mules!—[bu] and on camels,” says the Lord, “just as the Israelis bring a grain offering in a clean vessel to the Lord’s house. 21 Then I will also select some of them for myself[bv] as priests and as Levites,”[bw] says the Lord.

22 “For as the new heavens and the new earth
    that I am about to make
will endure before me,” says the Lord,
    “so will your descendants and your name endure.
23 And from New Moon to New Moon,
    and from Sabbath to Sabbath,[bx]
all[by] humanity will come to worship before me,”
    says the Lord.

24 “Then they will go out and look upon the dead bodies of the people who rebelled against me. For their worm will not die, nor will their fire be extinguished, and they will remain an object of revulsion to all[bz] humanity.”

1 Timothy 2

Prayer and Submission to Authority

First of all, then, I urge you to offer to God[a] petitions, prayers, intercessions, and expressions of thanks for all people, for kings, and for everyone who has authority, so that we might lead a quiet and peaceful life with all godliness and dignity.[b] This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to know the truth fully. There is one God. There is also one mediator between God and human beings—a human, the Messiah[c] Jesus. He gave himself as a ransom for everyone, the testimony at the proper time. For this reason I was appointed to be an announcer, an apostle, and a faithful and true teacher of the gentiles. (I am telling you the truth.[d] I am not lying.)

Instructions to Men and Women

Therefore, I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without being angry or argumentative. Women, for their part, should display their beauty by dressing modestly and decently in appropriate clothes, not with elaborate hairstyles or by wearing gold, pearls, or expensive clothes, 10 but through good actions. This is proper for women who claim to revere God.

11 Let a woman learn with a quiet spirit, and submissively. 12 Moreover, in the area of teaching, I am not allowing a woman to instigate conflict toward a man. Instead, she is to remain calm. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve, 14 and it was not Adam who was deceived. It was the woman who was deceived and became disobedient, 15 even though she will be saved through the birth of the Child,[e] if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, along with good judgment.[f]
