Old/New Testament
126 1 This Psalm was made after the return of the people from Babylon, and showeth that the means of their deliverance was wonderful after the seventy years of captivity forspoken by Jeremiah, in Jer. 25:12 and 29:10.
A song of degrees, or Psalm of David.
1 When the Lord brought again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that [a]dream.
2 Then was our mouth [b]filled with laughter, and our tongue with joy: then said they among the [c]heathen, The Lord hath done great things for them.
3 The Lord hath done great things for us, whereof we rejoice.
4 O Lord, bring again our captivity, as the [d]rivers in the South.
5 They that sow in tears, shall reap in joy.
6 They went weeping, and carried [e]precious seed: but they shall return with joy, and bring their sheaves.
127 1 He showeth that the whole estate of the world, both domestical and political, standeth by God’s mere providence and blessing, 3 And that to have children well nurtured, is an especial grace and gift of God.
A song of degrees, or Psalm of Solomon.
1 Except the Lord [f]build the house, they labor in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the [g]city, the keeper watcheth in vain.
2 It is in vain for [h]you to rise early, and to lie down late, and eat the bread [i]of sorrow: but he will surely give [j]rest to his beloved.
3 Behold, children are the inheritance of the Lord, and the fruit of the womb his reward.
4 As are the arrows in the hand of the strong man; so are the [k]children of youth.
5 Blessed is the man that hath his quiver full of them: for they [l]shall not be ashamed, when they speak with their enemies in the gate.
128 He showeth that blessedness appertaineth not to all universally, but to them only that fear the Lord, and walk in his ways.
A song of degrees.
1 Blessed is everyone that feareth the Lord, and walketh in his [m]ways.
2 When thou eatest the labors of thine [n]hands, thou shalt be blessed, and it shall be well with thee.
3 Thy wife shall be as the fruitful vine on the sides of thine house, and thy [o]children like the olive plants round about thy table.
4 Lo, surely thus shall the man be blessed, that feareth the Lord.
5 The Lord out of Zion shall [p]bless thee, and thou shalt see the wealth of [q]Jerusalem all the days of thy life.
6 Yea, thou shalt see thy children’s children, and peace upon Israel.
19 What say I then? that the idol is anything? or that that which is sacrificed to idols, is anything?
20 Nay, but that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not unto God: and I would not that ye should have [a]fellowship with the devils.
21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the [b]cup of the devils. Ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of the devils.
22 Do we provoke the Lord to anger? are we stronger than he?
23 (A)[c][d]All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
24 Let no man seek his own, but every man another’s wealth.
25 [e]Whatsoever is sold in the [f]shambles, eat ye, and ask no question for conscience sake.
26 (B)For the earth is the Lord’s, and [g]all that therein is.
27 If any of them which believe not, call you to a feast, and if ye will go, whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.
28 But if any man say unto you, This is sacrificed unto idols, eat it not, because of him that showed it, and for the conscience (for the earth is the Lord’s, and all that therein is.)
29 And the conscience, I say, not thine, but of that other: [h]for why should my liberty be condemned of another man’s conscience?
30 For if I through God’s [i]benefit be partaker, why am I evil spoken of, for that wherefore I give thanks?
31 (C)[j]Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
32 Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Grecians, nor to the Church of God:
33 Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they might be saved.
