Yahweh the Shepherd
A psalm of David.[a]
23 Yahweh is my shepherd;
I will not lack for anything.
2 In grassy pastures he makes me lie down;
by quiet waters he leads me.
3 He restores my life.[b]
He leads me in correct paths[c]
for the sake of his name.
4 Even when I walk in a dark valley, I fear no evil
because you are with me.
Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
5 You prepare before me a table
in the presence of my oppressors.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup is overflowing.
6 Surely goodness and loyal love will pursue me
all the days of my life,
and I will stay[d] in the house[e] of Yahweh
for a very long time.[f]
The King of Glory
A psalm of David.[g]
24 The earth is Yahweh’s, with its fullness,
the world and those who live in it,
2 because he has founded it on the seas,
and has established it on the rivers.
3 Who may ascend the mountain of Yahweh?
And who may stand in his holy place?
4 He who is innocent of hands and pure of heart,
who does not lift up his soul to falseness,
and does not swear deceitfully.
5 He will receive blessing from Yahweh,
and justice[h] from the God of his salvation.
6 Such is the sort of those who seek[i] him,
those who seek your face, even Jacob. Selah
7 Lift up your heads, O gates,
and rise up, O ancient doorways,
that the king of glory[j] may enter.
8 Who is the king of glory?[k]
Yahweh, strong and mighty;
Yahweh, mighty in war!
9 Lift up your heads, O gates,
and lift up, O ancient doorways,
that the king of glory[l] may enter.
10 Who is the king of glory?[m]
Yahweh of hosts,
He is the king of glory![n] Selah
A Prayer for Guidance, Deliverance, and Forgiveness
Of David.[o]
25 To you, O Yahweh, I lift up my soul.
2 O my God, I trust you; let me not be put to shame.
Do not let my enemies exult over me.
3 Indeed, none who wait for you should be put to shame.
Those who betray without cause should be put to shame.
4 Make me know your ways, O Yahweh.
Teach me your paths.
5 Cause me to walk in your truth and teach me,
because you are the God of my salvation.
I await you all day long.[p]
6 Remember your compassion, O Yahweh,
and your acts of loyal love,
because they are from of old.
7 Do not remember
the sins of my youth or my transgressions.
According to your loyal love remember me if you will,
for the sake of your goodness, O Yahweh.
8 Good and right is Yahweh;
therefore he instructs sinners in the way.
9 He causes the humble to walk in justice,
and teaches the humble his way.
10 All the paths of Yahweh are loyal love and faithfulness
for those who keep his covenant and statutes.[q]
11 Also, for the sake of your name, O Yahweh,
forgive my sin, because it is great.
12 Who is the man fearing Yahweh?
He will instruct him in the way he should choose.
13 His soul will lodge in prosperity,
and his offspring will possess the land.
14 Intimate fellowship with Yahweh is for those who fear him,
and he makes known his covenant to them.
15 My eyes are continually toward Yahweh,
because he will take my feet from the net.
16 Turn to me and have mercy on me
because I am lonely and afflicted.
17 Remove the troubles of my heart;
bring me out from my distresses.
18 Consider my affliction and trouble,
and forgive[r] all my sins.
19 Consider that my enemies are many,
and they hate me with violent hatred.
20 Protect my life and deliver me.
Let me not be put to shame, because I take shelter in you.
21 Let integrity and uprightness preserve me,
because I wait for you.
22 O God, redeem Israel
from all its troubles.
18 And on the next day Paul went in with us to James, and all the elders were present. 19 And after[a] greeting them, he began to relate[b] one after the other[c] the things which God had done among the Gentiles through his ministry. 20 And when[d] they heard this,[e] they began to glorify[f] God. And they said to him, “You see, brother, how many ten thousands there are among the Jews who have believed, and they are all zealous adherents of the law. 21 And they have been informed about you that you are teaching all the Jews who are among the Gentiles the abandonment of Moses, telling them not to circumcise their[g] children or to live according to our[h] customs. 22 What then is to be done?[i] Doubtless they will all hear that you have come! 23 Therefore do this that we tell you: we have[j] four men who have taken a vow upon themselves.[k] 24 Take these men and[l] purify yourself along with them and pay their expenses[m] so that they can shave their[n] heads, and everyone will know that the things which they had been informed about you are nothing, but you yourself also agree with observing the law. 25 But concerning the Gentiles who have believed, we have written a letter after[o] deciding they should avoid food sacrificed to idols and blood and what has been strangled and sexual immorality.” 26 Then Paul took along the men on the next day, and[p] after he[q] had purified himself together with them, he entered into the temple courts,[r] announcing the completion of the days of purification until the time[s] the offering would be presented on behalf of each one of them.
Paul Arrested in the Temple Courts
27 But when the seven days were about to be completed, the Jews from Asia[t] who had seen him in the temple courts[u] stirred up the whole crowd and laid hands on him, 28 shouting, “Israelite men, help! This is the man who is teaching everyone everywhere against the people and the law and this place! And furthermore he also brought Greeks into the temple, and has defiled this holy place!” 29 (For they had previously seen Trophimus the Ephesian in the city with him, whom they thought that Paul had brought into the temple.) 30 And the whole city was stirred up, and the people came running together, and they seized Paul and[v] dragged him outside of the temple courts,[w] and immediately the doors were shut.
31 And as they[x] were seeking to kill him, a report came up to the military tribune of the cohort that all Jerusalem was in confusion. 32 He[y] immediately took along soldiers and centurions and[z] ran down to them. And when[aa] they saw the military tribune and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul. 33 Then the military tribune came up and[ab] arrested him and ordered him[ac] to be bound with two chains, and inquired who he was and what it was that he had done. 34 But some in the crowd were shouting one thing and others another, and because[ad] he was not able to find out the truth on account of the commotion, he gave orders to bring him into the barracks.[ae] 35 And when he came to the steps, it happened that he had to be carried by the soldiers on account of the violence of the crowd, 36 for the crowd of people was following them,[af] shouting, “Away with him!”
Paul Permitted to Address the Crowd
37 And as he[ag] was about to be brought into the barracks,[ah] Paul said to the military tribune, “Is it permitted for me to say something to you?” And he said, “Do you know Greek? 38 Then you are not the Egyptian who before these days raised a revolt and led out into the wilderness the four thousand men of the Assassins?”[ai] 39 But Paul said, “I am a Jewish man from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no unimportant city. Now I ask you, allow me to speak to the people.” 40 So when[aj] he permitted him,[ak] Paul, standing there on the steps, motioned with his[al] hand to the people. And when there[am] was a great silence, he addressed them[an] in the Aramaic language, saying,
