Psalm 137-139

A sad song[a]

137 When we sat down beside the rivers in Babylon,
    we were very upset.
We thought about Zion city that we had left behind,
    and we wept.[b]
We hung up our harps there
on the branches of the willow trees.
Our enemies asked us to sing songs for them there.
They laughed at us as their prisoners.
They asked for a song to make them happy.
They shouted, ‘Sing us a song about Zion!’
But we are in a foreign land,
so we cannot sing a song to the Lord.
Jerusalem, I never want to forget you.
I would rather lose my right hand!
I would rather my tongue could no longer move![c]
Yes, I will always remember you, Jerusalem.
You are the most important thing that I think about,
more than anything else that makes me happy.

Lord, remember to punish the people of Edom.[d]
They were happy when Babylon's army won against Jerusalem.
On that day the Edomites said,
‘Knock down the city so that nothing still stands!’
People of Babylon, an army will soon destroy you!
They will punish you in the same way that you punished us.
May God bless whoever does that to you!
Just like you did to us,
they will hit your babies against a rock.
May God bless whoever does that to you!

David wrote this song.

Thank God for who he is

138 I will thank you, Lord, with my whole being.
I will sing and praise you in front of the gods.[e]
I look towards your holy temple,
and I bend down to worship you.
I thank you for who you are.
You love your people and they can always trust you.
You are more famous than anyone,
because you always do what you promise.
When I prayed to you, you answered me.
You made me brave and strong.
All the kings in the world will thank you, Lord,
when they hear the promises that you have made.
They will sing about the things that you have done,
because they see that you are great, Lord.
Yes, the Lord is high above the earth.
But he takes care of humble people.
He also knows what proud people are doing,
even if they try to hide.[f]
When there is danger all round me,
you help me to be strong.
When my enemy is angry, you fight against him.
You save me with your strong right hand.[g]
The Lord stands with me to do what he has promised.
Yes, Lord, your faithful love will always continue.
You have made us who we are,
so do not leave us now!

This is a song that David wrote.

It is for the music leader.

God understands me[h]

139 Lord, you look deep inside me,
and you know all about me.
You know when I sit down,
and you know when I get up.
Even when you are far away,
you understand what I am thinking about.
You see me when I go out,
and you see me when I stay at home.
You know everything that I do!
Yes Lord, before I open my mouth to speak,
you know what I will say.
You are all around me, in front of me and behind me.
You put your hand on me to help me.
You know so much about me, it is wonderful.
    I cannot understand it.
My thoughts cannot reach as high as that!

Is there anywhere that I can go
to run away from your Spirit?
Anywhere that I go, you are already there!
If I go up to heaven,
    you would be there.
If I dig deep down into the ground to reach Sheol,
    you would be there too.
If I fly away to where the sun rises in the east,
or to the other side of the sea in the west,
    you would be there.
10 You would use your hand to lead me.
Your strong right hand would keep me safe.
11 I might say, ‘I will hide myself in the dark,
and the light round me will change into night.’
12 But it is never too dark for you to see.
For you, the night has as much light as the day.
Darkness and light are the same to you!

13 You made every part of me.
You made me grow inside my mother before I was born.
14 I thank you for the wonderful way that you have made me.
Everything that you do is wonderful!
    I know it is true.
15 While you caused me to grow in a secret place,
none of my body was hidden from you.
You made me deep in the earth.[i]
16 Your eyes watched me before I was born.
Before I had seen the light of day,
you decided how many days I would live!
You wrote it down in your book.
17 You have so many thoughts about me, God,
that I cannot understand them all.
18 They are too many for me to count,
more than the sand on the shore of the sea.
Even if I finished counting them,
    you would still be there!

19 God, you should surely destroy the wicked people!
Yes, you murderers, leave me alone!
20 Those people say bad things against you, God.
    Your enemies always tell lies.
21 Lord, I hate those people who hate you.
I have no time for those who turn against you.
22 Yes, I really hate them.
Your enemies are my enemies too.
23 Please God, look deep inside me.
See what is there in my thoughts.
24 Show me if I am following any evil way.
Lead me in the right way that has always been true.

1 Corinthians 13

Love is most important

13 I may be able to speak many different languages that people or angels speak. But that is worth nothing if I do not love other people. I would only be making a loud noise, like someone who hits a piece of metal. I may be able to speak messages from God. I may understand all God's secret things, and know all the facts. I may have great faith so that I trust God enough to move mountains. But I am nothing if I do not love others. I may give all my things to help poor people. I may let other people take my body to burn it.[a] But that would not help me if I do not love others.

If I love people, I will be patient. I will be kind. I will not be jealous of other people. I will not be proud and say that I am great. If I love people, I will be polite. I will not just want to please myself. I will not quickly become angry. If someone does a wrong thing against me, I will not keep it in my thoughts. If I love people, I will not be happy when bad things happen. Instead, I will be happy when things happen that are right and true. If I love people, I will always accept their problems. I will always believe them. I will always hope for what is best. I will always be patient in troubles.

Love will always continue. The gift to speak messages from God will not always be necessary. The gift to speak in different languages will stop one day. The gift to know special things will not always be necessary. At this time, we know only a part of everything. We can only speak a part of God's whole message. 10 But a time will come when everything becomes complete. When God does that, we will not need the small parts that we have now.

11 When I was a child, I talked like a child. My thoughts were a child's thoughts. I understood things in a way that a child understands. But now that I have become a man, I have stopped being like a child. 12 At this time, we see things as if we were looking at them in a mirror. What we see now is not clear. But the time will come when we do not need a mirror. We will see everything clearly. Now we know only a part of what is true. But then we will know everything completely. We will understand completely, just as God understands us completely.

13 At this time there are three things that continue. We continue to trust God. We continue to hope for his good things. We continue to love other people. But the most important of these things is love.
